Tawa gave DV a hiding at Hilton today. Maybe Tawa are the team to beat
Apologies for possibly posting in the wrong thread. Greytown will be 100% on for promotion from Cap Prem to CL2 come the end of the season. They have had a busy recruiting window. Sam Mason-Smith has signed for them, alongside a 21 year old English CB who was on the books with Everton as a kid (according to transfermarkt). More interestingly, Paul Ifill has been able to call upon his Christchurch United connection and recruited goalkeeper Scott Morris as well as two other United players. Apparently the Christchurch contingent will be flying up from Christchurch every week to play. Pretty crazy to think footballers are basically doing football FIFO in the third tier of Welly football. Watch this space!

Any news on where players have ended up? Tawa have looked very good in preseason. Anybody got predictions for which 4 teams finish top?
If I was going to predict the league standings I'd go:
1. North Wellington. Lots of returning players, good signings as well.
2. Palmerston North United. Same sort of squad, new coach but he's done well with them before.
3. Tawa. Finished last season well and have looked very good in pre season.
4. Douglas Villa. One of the form teams by the end of last year, unsure what their squad looks like this year.
5. Lower Hutt City FC. Good coach, don't know too much else.
6. Palmerston North Marist. Not as strong as the other teams, few very decent players but looked alright last year.
7. Wainuiomata. Tough ground to go to.
8. Taradale AFC. Solid team, should do well enough, new coach as well.
9. Stop Out. Completely new squad apparently. Will depend on which players have stuck around.
10. Seatoun. New coach, felt like last year they were lucky TK were so bad.

I think you have the first three correct, but way off for the rest.
Based on pre-season and movement of players Wainui are pole position for the wooden spoon, then Douglas Villa and Stop Out won’t be far in front - their squads have been gutted. Taradale were awful last year also.
Seatoun played 3 x National League squads pre season and looked good - definitely not wooden spoon. Battle between Tawa and North Welly for the title I think.
1. North Welly
2. Tawa
3. Palmy Utd
4. Palmy Marist
5. Lower Hutt
6. Seatoun
7. Douglas Villa
8. Stop Out
9. Taradale
10. Wainui

Stop Out did alright in the Hilton Petone if that’s any indication. From what I’ve heard they have changed their entire team tho.

Interesting results from CL2 today. I was definitely correct with Wainui and Stop Out being poor and Nth Welly and Palmy Utd being strong. Surprised with the Tawa result - is LH better or were Tawa poor today? Douglas Villa may also be in for a long season.

Seatoun with a good result as well
I take back my pre-season predictions on Seatoun, no doubt home advantage wouldv'e helped but they look closer to mid table safety than anything else this year.
North Welly surely team to beat this year. Campbell Webster at Stop Out is a good pickup but they might need a bit more this year if they're to challenge higher than the bottom.
Any news on what promotion into CL2 looks like this year? Still rumors around NL reserve sides entering or not but would be nice to have a clear picture soon considering the season is underway.

CL2 game this weekend:
Douglas Villa vs Lower Hutt City, Memorial Drive, Fri 2:30pm
Villa starting the season with a lot of change and a loss to Seatoun (who look far more competitive this year tbf). May take a few games for their team to gel, first game at home should be a boost. LH with a good point against one of the challengers in Tawa. Will say Lower Hutt win.
Tawa vs Seatoun, Redwood Park, Sat 2:30pm
Seatoun with a great start, Tawa coming off a come from behind draw against LH. Both teams looked strong in pre season but will say Tawa win at home.
Stop Out vs Taradale, Hutt Park, Sat 2:30pm
Dale with a good win to start the season against the newbies Wainui. Stop Out lost to title favourites North Welly to start the season but lots of change there so may take a while to get things clicking. Will go draw but leaning more towards Taradale as a potential winner in this one.
Wainuiomata vs Palmerston North Marist, Richard Prouse Park, Sat 2:30pm
First game of the season at Richard Prouse, will have to be a fortress if Wainui want to stay up this year. Marist starting with a tough loss to rivals United but looks like the same team mostly form last year. Palmy North Marist to win this one.
Palmerston North United vs North Wellington, Memorial Park, Sat 2:45pm
Both teams coming off big wins to start the season, living up to their pre-season predictions of challengers. Very hard to pick so will go draw. United at home are always difficult to play though.

Agree with all of these results at first glance.
Game of the round definitely United v Nth Welly. I think this could be a first jab for the title contenders. I think Nth Welly have the upper hand going into this game, having a largely similar squad to what competed in Central League last season.
Tawa v Seatoun will give everyone a clear look at whether these two teams could possibly sneak into the Top 4 (and promotion to Central League).

Massive result for Palmy. Nth Wellington will be gutted
This has to make Palmy North Utd favourites. They're so tough to beat at Memorial and they've basically kept the same squad for the last 4 years. Robson is a good coach as well.
Lots of change at North Welly so may take a few games for them to be churning out consistent results. They'll definitely feel disappointed with 4-1 though. Was anyone at the game to comment on it?
Tawa potentially in the same boat as I expect them to start stringing some good performances together soon.
Alarm bells have to be ringing at Stop Out. Lots of change but early signs aren't good at all. 7 conceded in 2 games and 0 scored is grim viewing. Taradale with 2 easyish games to start but they look very competent

CL2 games this weekend:
Tawa vs Taradale, Redwood Park, Sat 2:30pm
Tawa with two draws so far this season, and Dale with two wins (albeit against two teams tipped to struggle this year). Tawa looked good in pre-season but yet to show their quality. Will go for another draw.
Wainuiomata vs Douglas Villa, Richard Prouse Park, Sat 2:30pm
Wainui with a tight loss to PNM last week, and Douglas Villa with a draw against Lower Hutt. Expecting a very tight game, leaning towards a draw in this one as well (would go Wainui if I had to pick a winner).
Palmerston North Marist vs Seatoun, Arena Manawatu Turf, Sat 2:45pm
Marist with a gritty win against Wainui, first game at home for the league season. Seatoun looking very competitive this year. PNM to win this one.
Lower Hutt City vs North Wellington, Fraser Park, Sat 3pm
LH with two draws to start the season, North Welly with a big win then big loss to PNU. North Welly with a lot of quality in their side and expecting them to bounce back after a disappointing loss to United. North Welly to win.
Stop Out vs Palmerston North United, Hutt Park, Sun 2:30pm
PNU looking like early favourites for the title this year. Stop Out struggling early on. Hard to see anything other than a big Palmy North Utd win here.

Possibly the only predictable thing in this round was McMenamin getting a red card, don't think I've ever even heard of anyone having a nice interaction with him.

PNU winning 4-3 to go top of the table
I saw the game on the live stream.
First half PNU were very dangerous going forward, every attack looked like it could eventuate in a goal. Not sure if that’s because of PNU being decent, or Stop Out being so poor.
3-1 up when the incident happened. A clean tackle on PNU striker went out for a corner, the striker lunged towards a Stop Out defender and then the Stop Out keeper came flying in and body slammed the striker.
That incident changed the game - PNU were very very poor when they went down to 10, they scored one more off a corner but barely tested the fill-in keeper.
Stop Out have Campbell Webster up front and just pump long balls. I brought about one goal and they score another off a corner.
In summary - Stop Out will be lucky not to finish last. Jury is still out on PNU, they weren’t as good today as the previous results have indicated, especially when Jones was sent off. Maybe we will know more when they play Tawa next weekend.

After 3 games, Palmy North Utd cementing themselves as favourites this year. Biggest surprises have been Seatoun and North Welly. Seatoun defying expectations and looking extremely competitive this year. North Welly potentially still just waiting for things to click but a disappointing result to LHC.
At the other end of the table, the Stop Out games against Wainui and DV could decide whether they're playing Cap Prem next year or not. Campbell Webster looking sharp but they look extremely suspect at the back, keeper out for at least the next game or so which won't help. Their 3 games so far have been against 2 strong sides in PNU and North Welly but the 3-0 at home to Taradale should be ringing the alarm bells.

Seatoun shared their goal from the Palmy Marist game to instagram. Down to 10 men, from 17 minutes, score a goal in the last minute of the first half, hold out the opposition for the second half. Then they put up a video of their goal with the audio from THAT Troy Deeney goal for Watford against Leicester.
Absolute cinema. Also the kid that scored it is absolutely rapid!
EDIT
I tried to share the link but I think I am too old to make it work

All reports I’ve heard is that they are hard to break down. Tawa were all over Seatoun in the first half last week but didn’t score until the 94th. Then this week they played 80 minutes with 10 mean and come out with a clean sheet.
They are back at Seatoun Park this weekend against Wainui, followed by Stop Out away and Taradale at home. Probably 3 of the bottom 4 teams in the league. Then the fixture against Palmy United away.
Interesting month ahead for Miramar’s little bothers.

CL2 games this week (take all predictions with a pinch of salt as some of these teams are impossible to predict, it's just a bit of fun):
Seatoun vs Wainuiomata, Seatoun Park, Sat 2:30pm
Both teams with wins last weekend, Seatoun turning into one of the dark horses this season. Seatoun to win this one.
Palmerston North United vs Tawa, Memorial Park, Sat 2:45pm
United the only team still with a 100% record, Tawa with their first win of the season last weekend. PNU seemed to lose a bit of an edge after their striker was sent off, may struggle slightly without him? PNU at memorial are always a force so United to win this.
Palmerston North Marist vs Taradale, Arena Manawatu, Sat 2:45pm
Taradale with a decent start to the season sitting in 3rd, Marist struggling slightly after what was a frustrating loss to a 10 man Seatoun side. Imagine these two teams will be in and around the same area of the table this season so will go for a draw.
North Wellington vs Douglas Villa, Alex Moore Park, Sat 3pm
NW with two frustrating results, will be looking to revamp their title aspirations this week. Villa struggling this season, very different squad compared to last year. Surely North Welly to win this one.
Stop Out vs Lower Hutt City, Hutt Park, Sun 2:30pm
Lower Hutt with a good win over NW last round, Stop Out with a tough loss to PNU but looked improved slightly in the second half. hard to see anything other than a Lower Hutt win here (also does anyone know why the team is playing some games on Sundays?)

Seatoun WIN - back at home, should be too strong for the newbies
Tawa WIN - they have been close every week, I think PNU without their 12 might be a big loss
Taradale WIN - I think there are big problems at Marist
NW WIN - back at home against a struggling DV, without their best goal scorer
Stop Out v LH DRAW - Stop Out made big improvements in the second half, I think that could continue into this game.

Just did a little look at what next season might look like with teams going up to NL and if only 4 go up from CL, and 4 go up from CL2, if 4 teams come up from Cap Prem and the Central federation (2 from Cap Prem and 1 each of east and west prems would be my guess) into CL2, that will leave only TK as the club team in Cap Prem, if Greytown and Welly Marist go up (which they might not). This is based on the league tables so far so obviously this will change. But if it is first teams only in CL2, it looks very likely that in a few years Cap Prem could be all Reserve sides. Island Bay and North Welly are the best performing teams in Cap 1 without teams in the div above.
I'm bringing this up because while I'd like to see CL and CL2 stay club only, it would be pretty crazy if teams from Cap 1 were going to CL playoffs if there are no other club teams in Cap Prem in the future, or if teams like Wellington Marist choose not to go for promotion.
This is all very hypothetical but would love to hear peoples thoughts on this. The Reserve sides in CL2 argument definitaly has some ground, but it also feels like this would crush some CL2 teams. Why would someone play for a CL2 club team, if they could play for a res side in CL2, and potentially play National League.

They have teams in other regions like whanganui athletic and rumours of a Nelson based team that would be prioritised over cap 1 before that happens

My point is more to do with once teams like Whanganui or even Nelson are in CL2, what happens with the Capital representative in the CL2 playoffs?

That won’t change, so everything will stay the same how it has been, so you’ll start seeing cap prem being dominated by reserve sides as it should be. Teams like Wellington united will still have to graft all their way up which they should do in the next few years. Cap prem will be dominated by reserve for “development” unless they widen the region for it.

If they don’t have teams in cap prem club only they’ll go to other regions I’d say

CL 2027
6 remaining CL teams plus top 3 CL2 plus Nelson Suburbs (could be an extra team if Wests/Napier win the NL playoff)
CL2 2027
7 remaining teams plus West winner, East winner and Prem winner
2028
Cap Prem winner v East/West playoff winner up to CL2*
* In my opinion Reserve teams from Cap Prem allowed - it will only be one up each year…. If they win the playoff
