United player stocks plummet for big game

Wairarapa United will have just the one reserve on the bench for the matchbelled as perhaps the most important in the club's history, their Capital Soccer premier division fixture with Lower Hutt City on Saturday.

The small roster of players with which Wairarapa United have been operating all season has been made even smaller with news that midfielder Anton Ross will be holidaying in the South Island.

After all the talk on this site recently about just how important this league is (a missing official, bad pitches, etc) I think this comment sums up what its importance really is.

Interesting how he has made enemies over that side of the hill, and now over this side!!

Blantently saying that Masterton would not let them play on Hullena park even though there are no games schedulled for this weekend.  Nice research!!! If he looked at the draw, the Masterton 2nd team are playing a vitally important knockout semi final there on saturday.

What about Greytown?  The 2nds played there last week. What happens if Wai U get through to CL?  No dedicated ground to call there own? Playing on grounds that are normally used for cricket won't last long (The Sports Bowl and Queen Elizabeth park!!).

Maybe these things should have been adressed when the Wairarapa Club took shape.  Not depending on other clubs to bail them out was the whole idea of them becoming a club on their own.

I have no problems with the game being played at Hullena Park on Saturday, providing the local league is not played. We will get the bar takings.  Then again, I am only the club captain and these decisions are not made by me.

On the other note:  This Anton Ross who is on holiday, was involved in the 2nd teams win at Greytown last saturday, then spent most of the night on the booze at the Masterton AFC clubrooms (until about 2am - i know because i left at that hour and he was still there), then played for the 1st team against West on the Sunday. Good on him for going on Holiday. He has only just come back from Australia, working and then gets thrusted in to play for Wai U.  I hope he enjoys himself!!!

The league is unimportant because someone has gone on holiday from one of the top teams?

Is CL unimportant because the 3rd leading goal scorer has gone on holiday overseas for 2 months?

Actually, I'm editing what I originally wrote in this message after re-reading capital football, and it appears that they are cancelled, yes

and for at least one of them it'll probably only be 2nd team in name

It says here are the games/transfers and every other game is cancelled, not cap 2 down cancelled

feverish would know, but reading the wording it sounds as though both these games are cancelled and its just the games that were listed are on

Yup, after having a closer look at what Cap Football says it does appear that those games are off...

which doesnt really make sense given the fact that Tawa and Wharfies have played as few/fewer games than other people who are playing

Can't believe the Wharfies v Tawa game is off, both teams have only played 14 games.

This could make it VERY interesting if the season doesn't get completed

think its all to do with the piches and councils - think redwood isnt playable and neither is karori so think they might be struggling to find a ground

yeah maybe but Harcourt Park hasn't been played on in two weeks no. 1 pitch and 3 weeks no.2 pitch so would be as playable as the other grounds still being played on I think so that game off is weird as they could just transfer it like the Mar game? BUT I think Hutt council are way more protective of their grounds so might not let anyone out there?

atleast this way karori will know what they have to do to stay up - and hopefully tawa will know what they have to do to win it

Purely hypothetical...but if Wests somehow did finish 2nd last, would they give all of the players in their 2nd team a couple of weeks off before Capital 1 finished. Or would they play for the 1st team?...In which case would they only be allowed to drop 3 players for the promotion-relegation match? wulfsteam2008-08-01 13:14:07

Petero is leaving the country. Bugger we need the Bay to take points of teams. He is a very good footballer.

from IB website..

Up 1-0 within 2 minutes, only to be 2-1 down at half-time and absolutely thrashed 8-3 at the end of 90 minutes by a waterside team desperate to stay up, and who's commitment to that task, coupled with some great touches constantly overpowered our midfield and defense and led to some great goals (for them).

It was a sad way to farewell Petero from NZ football in '08, but the coaches, club and particularly the players who played alongside him, wish him all the best for the future and feel privileged to have been able to play alongside him during his short time here.

We hope that the few people who made Petero's life in NZ extremely difficult do not linger in his memory too long and are quickly replaced with all the good reasons why the rest of us stay in the country and also play our football in NZ: good friends, good living standards, and a guaranteed right to be kept free from persecution, entrapment and extortion.

it is just that some people (BobBollocksTawa, or whatever his name is) were going on about how disgraceful it was that a result stood when there was only 2 officials at a match of such importance.  I (and a few others) made the point that in the great scheme of things, the Champs Premier League is not that important.  A player missing a vital promotion game to go on holiday in the south island (wtf????????) highlights this point.

The Mar on shaky ground. After next week will they have enough points - or watch as everyone flies past them?
Saw the game today. Mar had some good attacks early on, but Wests came home strong. Cheriton pulling the strings nicely. Bert Taylor the pick of the Mar.
A loss to LH next week and they will be lucky to hang on.

If other clubs have tried to change the days they play on and been refused, I could see why everyone would be pissed with Wests being able to do it.  Otherwise, I think people are making a big deal over nothing."

fair enough. maybe having your "first team" humbled by rovers (again) is not exactly a good look. although, didn't wests get pumped 4-0 at home in the first round with all their big guns playing? 4-1 away seems like an improvement.

i haven't done the math, but it will be be interesting to see how much miramar respect top level football if other results go against their 2nds and they look likely to get relegated.

lower hutt are not dropping players from 1sts at the moment, first team is the clubs priority. i agree if the young team they have had all season arent good enough then maybe developing them in cap 1 is the best thing for them next year. wairarpa coach thanked hutt yesterday for not stacking their team like wests did last week, he was very dirty with the wests club in his aftermatch speech, wairarpa won 3-0 and could have been 8!!rabo and marek outstanding
Capital website hasd announced rapa as prem winners how rude though they know they havent won it and tawa can still catch them, do your maths capital soccer!!!

Maybe Capital Football are hoping that Tawa don't catch them.  Maybe they are banking on the fact that the games that were cancelled yesterday are not going to be played? That would mean each team except Miramar have only 2 games to play and they are not going to play the other games that tawa haven't played.  A bit unfair.  If Wairarapa United lose the next 2 games and tawa win the next 2, Tawa would certainly push for their remaining games to be played.  Any club would.

providing tawa win all 4 games remaining they can still win if - rapa draw twice or lose once, tawa can afford a draw if marist were to win twice which isn't likely!

fijis goal difference is superior so tawa need more than a draw from marist.

miramar only have one game remaining so i would think the likely hood of them dropping players would be next to nil. you didnt really have to do the maths just look at how many games they have played.
