Well you could do us a big favour by beating LH in a couple of weeks...and doing the same to Wests would be quite nice as well....

big game this week, LH vs the mar.... a LH win might do quite nicely for us though...and hopefully we can add some excitement to the title race with a win over the Rapa

And yes, obviously we would be disappointed, and possibly even a bit angry if we got relegated....but, umm....who wouldnt be? I'm always disappointed and angry when I lose, I can't see relegation as a fun thing.
I don't imagine a trip to CF headquarters happening,

I am surprised you guys want LH to beat Mar. You can catch the Mar - your goal diff is better.

Well I haven't thought it through completely...but the way I figure it is if Lower Hutt beat the Mar and we beat LH then all we need is to win one of our games against Wairarapa (or draw them both) OR have Tawa or you guys beat LH and we are safe...

If the Mar win then I think we need to win 2 games to be completely safe....

Maybe a draw wouldn't go amiss....either way, it's probably good that they are playing each other

If Marist 1 do get relegated, heaven forbid, it'll be a double shame, mainly for them as they play good enough footy for Cap Prem and are great reps for the club...(except when Marist GK goes mental!! ). Also it'll be a potential bugger for us in the 2nds as we are 2nd by a point from The Dreamers with 5 games to play, and can potentially make a playoff for promotion to Cap 1...so could be a double whammy if dodgy stacking continues and the Marist lads go down...will also have to put up with Bri bleating at training...don't know what is worse actually... (Sorry Bri  :)

that could help save our seconds if the dremers didnt win. interesting.

you are three points behind Mar and better goal difference. If they lose - you only need one win and not get whopped in the others

Yup, but with the results I was talking about we might avoid the promotion-relegation match as well (staying ahead of LH).

And that was why I was saying we wanted LH to win vs Mar, and then you guys and Tawa to help out and beat them

By Gary Caffell

Wairarapa United will be without their inspirational skipper Pita Rabo for their vital Capital Soccer premier division game with Marist in Wellington tomorrow.

A neck injury suffered while working in the forestry means Rabo will not only definitely miss this fixture but could also be on the sidelines when Wairarapa United complete their premier division campaign with another match against Marist at home next weekend.

Rabo's absence will obviously hurt Wairarapa United in a game where a win could actually see them crowned as premier division champions.

They are currently eight points ahead of their only challenger Tawa on the competition table and while Tawa have two games in hand anything less than a win for them against Kapiti Coast United tomorrow would make Wairarapa United's lead unassailable, providing, of course, that they win themselves

Fijian international Rabo has been an outstanding leader of Wairarapa United this season.

His cool composure in pressure situations, his astute distribution skills and his uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time when goals are there to be scored has justifiably seen him among four Wairarapa United players included in Team Wellington's extended squad for the national summer league & an honour also accorded Seule Soromon, Miriek Tvaroh and Carl Shailer.

Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley says losing a player of Rabo's calibre would weaken any side but he has also taken confidence from the recent showings of young Rathkeale College student Kota Maeno, who will now join Soromon in the striker's role.

The diminutive Maeno is not as physically imposing as Rabo, and is still in the process of developing his ball skills, but Keinzley has liked the way he has added sting to the Wairarapa United attack whenever he has come off the reserve bench, simply by virtue of his enthusiasm and high workload. "He's still learning but he gets involved in a big way and you want that," Keinzley said of Maeno.

Rabo's absence will see Tvaroh take over the captaincy of Wairarapa United tomorrow and he is the hard-nosed type of player who will relish the chance to lead his team to what could be the most notable victory in their club's history.

Tvaroh will be part of a quartet also involving Paul Gregory, Sakeo Valevou and Aaron Spierling which will be looking to dominate the midfield, and close down a Marist attacking unit which tends to interchange on a regular basis so as to keep opposition defenders guessing.

And tight defence will also by very much on the minds of fullbacks Shailer, Waisake Sabutu, Andy Robertson and James Oxtoby and goalkeeper Matt Borren, who has been in superb form in recent games.

"They (Marist) are so unorthodox the way they play you can't take anything for granted defensively, you have to have your wits about you all the time," Keinzley said.

The loss of Rabo will also mean Wairarapa United will be looking for the pacy Soromon to make an even bigger than usual impact in an attacking sense.

He is a player whose acceleration is a major asset and no goals promise to be more important than any he scores here.

That Marist will be as desperate for victory as Wairarapa United is guaranteed by the fact that relegation from premier division will be facing them fairly and squarely in the face if they fail to secure maximum points.

"It's going to be a battle royal, nothing is surer than that," Keinzley said.

"There is a lot hinging on it for both teams, it could go either way."

Doesn't look that Rimataka Hill road is going to open....certainly not in time for today's match anyway.

However I have heard that they have found a way to play the match tomorrow, play it somewhere where no-one needs to go over the Hill....Marist's second home ground...Levin.

Trips to Kapiti last week, Levin tomorrow, and Wairarapa next week, feels like we're in the big travel league

Was a good game and both sides looked to play some good football despite the ground conditions not being the best.

A little premature dont you think.

Marist have a hard finish, Wairarapa twice and Lower Hutt, whilst Lower Hutt also have a tough road with Wharfies, Tawa and Marist still to play. Its goning to be tough for either of these to overhual Miramar.

T'is a reasonable point, especially seeing as they could field a reasonably strong team for any playoff if only one of LH or us overtook them

A draw would take Wairarapa to 38 points with a GD of +29.

Tawa could get to 38 if they win their three remaining matches; currently their GD is +13

So, Tawa would have to win their remaining three games by a combined total of 17 goals to get their goal difference to +30.

All void of course if Wairarapa beat Marist.

do they. well that makes us pretty much safe. LH could still catch (mathematcially) Wests (on goal difference) even with only 2 wins though

So if I read correctly what you are saying. Wharfies are now safe so they drop players to their 2nds so Lh can beat your 1st, say 11 nil and move ahead of Wests. Is that correct?

Do Wharfies have any incentive to drop players to their second team, doesn't that team have an almost guaranteed chance of staying in Cap 1 anyway?

i think its guaranteed last place in cap 1 anyway now. the question is whether the third team (the Dreamers) can win Cap 2. They are leading but pretty tight. IB and Marist still in it.

Wairarapa United are just one step away from winning Capital Soccer's premier division title after their 4-2 win over Marist in Wellington yesterday.

The local side completes their premier division programme with another match against Marist at home next weekend and a win here will there not only make them premier division champions but also give them a shot at qualifying to play in the central league series next season.

Should Wairarapa United not pick up any competition points in their return fixture with Marist though they could find themselves overtaken by Tawa who still have three matches to complete and who trail them by eight points.

Wins to Tawa in all three of those games would take them to 38 points, one more than Wairarapa United's current tally of 37pts.

The decisiveness of the Wairarapa United victory yesterday does suggest, however, that Marist's prospects of beating them at home next weekend are slim at best although Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley was quick to say his side would be taking nothing for granted.

He said a win to Marist then would keep them out of relegation, something they would be desperate to avoid.

"They've got as much to play for as we have so we can't start thinking we are homed and hosed," he said.

Keinzley said yesterday's result did not, in fact, reflect the toughness of the battle with Marist making Wairarapa United work hard for everything they got.

The physicality of the play was evidenced by Wairarapa United having Andy Robertson sent off for a dangerous tackle 10 minutes into the second half and at least three other players yellow carded.

Territorially Marist dominated the early action in the first half but once Wairarapa United settled into their rhythm they started to take at least a semblance of control and went to the halftime break 2-0 up thanks to goals to Sakeo Valevou and Seule Soromon.

That lead was increased to 3-0 when Soromon scored again and then Marist opened their account before substitute Kote Maeno netted number four for Wairarapa United. Marist got a consolation goal almost on fulltime but by then the bird had flown.

Midfielder Miriek Tvaroh was player of the match for Wairarapa United while others to shine were Waisake Sabutu, Sakeo Valevou and Seule Soromon.

Wairarapa United soccer coach Phil Keinzley wants a big and vocal crowd to cheer home his side in their final Capital premier division match of the season against Marist at the Pugh Sports Bowl in Masterton on Saturday.

Victory will not only guarantee Wairarapa United the premier division title but also the chance to take part in a playoff series which could lead to them playing at central league level next season.

But, conversely, a loss would open the door for second-placed Tawa, who have two games in hand, to grab the premier division spoils from under their noses.

Keinzley said his team was "absolutely rapt" to be playing the last of their competition games at home and that with so much hinging on the result they were hopeful of the Wairarapa sporting community turning out in large numbers to support them.

"Having the crowd behind you can often mean the difference between success and defeat so it would be nice to think that people will make the effort to get along and help us out for such an important game," he said.

"It's history in the making for us, they don't come much bigger than this."

Keinzley is adamant Marist will be an awkward proposition for Wairarapa United despite their 4-2 loss when the two teams met in Wellington on Sunday.

He said that scoreline did not reflect the toughness of the battle on that occasion and with possible relegation staring them in the face Marist would be even more determined this time round. "They have everything to gain and nothing to lose, teams are always likely to produce something special when that's the case," he said.

The loss of Andy Robertson through suspension after he was sent off early in the second half of Sunday's match doesn't help the Wairarapa United cause either.

Robertson has been one of the big success stories of the premier division squad this season with his ability to perform well practically anywhere on the park.

He was to play at right fullback this coming weekend and that role will now be filled by Sakeo Valevou with promising youngster Kote Maeno likely to take Valevou's spot in the midfield.

Three Wairarapa United players are battling injury problems leading into their team's final match in the 2008 Capital Soccer premier competition against Marist at the Pugh Sports Bowl, Masterton on Saturday.

Waisake Sabutu (knee), James Oxtoby (foot) and Miriek Tvaroh (hip) were all in the "doubtful starter" category yesterday but coach Phil Keinzley is "pretty confident" all three will take their place in a game which Wairarapa United need to win to guarantee them the premier division title, and a shot at the central league for 2009.

"I can't see any of them missing this one, they'd walk on hot coals to be part of it," Keinzley said.

"In any case they should all be right in another couple of days, resting up is the best cure for them."

Good news too for Wairarapa United is that skipper Pita Rabo is on the mend from a neck problem caused in a work accident with Keinzley expecting him to firing on all cylinders for what is being touted as the most important match in the history of the club.

"Win this and we have a chance to play in the highest league we possibly can next season, guys like Pita are hanging out for that, "Keinzley said.

"It's a huge incentive for them and they don't want to waste it."

Word is that Capital Soccer CEO Keith Palmer will be bringing the premier division trophy (which is apparently valued at $30,000) to Masterton on Saturday to present to Wairarapa United should they win but, understandably, Keinzley himself isn't looking that far ahead.

He anticipates a stern challenge from a Marist side desperate to avoid relegation and is adamant that if Wairarapa United don't bring their "A game" to the Pugh Sports Bowl they will lose, and possibly open the door for second-placed Tawa to snatch the spoils from under their noses.

For that to happen Tawa would almost certainly have to beat Kapiti Coast on Saturday as well as win their two catch-up games which follow.

Two wins and a draw could have them even with Wairarapa United but the latter have the better goal difference, which is understood to be the first of the countback systems should teams finish on the same number of competition points.

Currently Wairarapa United have scored the most goals in the premier division, 47, as well as conceding the least, 18, which gives them a goal difference of plus 18.

Tawa, on the other hand, have scored 34 goals and conceded 21, leaving them with a goal difference of plus 13.

Saturday's game also sees Wairarapa United striker Seule Soromon in with a chance of setting a new Wairarapa United mark for the number of goals scored during any one season.

He needs just one more to take the name of Scotsman Kevin Murray out of the record books in that regard.
