Just caught the extra time and shoot out in Dunedin. From what I saw, it wasn't really a football match. What could easily be described as a blizzard kicked in for the final 20 minutes of the game, which heavily disadvantaged tech (snow coming sideways into their faces, huge wind). As far as the shootout went, Olympic should consider themselves lucky. Tech keeper got some part of his body to 3 of them, but couldn't keep them out. Olympic keeper did look far more likely to stop one, and of all the Tech players he could have denied - it was Tim Myers. 1-1 FT 3-3AET Bay Olympic win 5-3 on penalties

Olympic have got themselves into a habit of winning shoot-outs at the Cale now.

If you wait until later this evening, Rab Smith will have photos and a write up on his website, so you can see just how nuts the weather was down here.

I am guessing that if Olympic aren't in the final, then it won't be at North Harbour

I went and watched the Sports-Caversham game.

While it was 4-0, Caversham were not a 4 goal better team and far from it. Had it been 11 v 11, it would have run close. A red card in the first 15mins (rightfully) to a the defender for taking the striker 1v1 with keeper fixed this tie but Caversham did not dominate in what could be described as a 'leveling' pitch i.e. sh*thouse. There was then a further 3 reds so that it finished Sports 8 v Caversham 10 and while I can understand the red cards, I have to ask if the ref could not have done something earlier to fix this. There were some tasty challenges going in that were allowed and I think if players go 'ok thats allowed' it becomes open season. 1 got a red for abusing the lino and another red to a Sports player for abusing the guy that committed a red card tackle on a Sports player. To me, the 2nd and 4th goal were offside and that was the general consensus around the group I was with.

Having said that, Caversham took their chances, Sports missed two sitters, were lucky not to have a couple more tossed and Mark Fulcher was definitely the busier keeper making some saves that would have embarrassed Glen Moss for quality. The right team won, but it was not as comprehensive as the scoreline suggests.

2nd was fine, and a good finish to boot. 4th was so far offside everyone had stopped playing as he completed the finish.

Three for me, and two for them.

When the referee assessor who was next to us says its offside, who am I to argue with him? It was a good finish though considering.

Yeah, I think the rule is that if there's no Auckland team in the final, the two finalists go into a hat and the one which is drawn out is the host, provided they can actually host it with TV requirements etc.

Chatham Cup final in Carterton anyone?

Fair enough mate wasn't trying to start an argument. From where i was standing it looked level, ultimately the lino agreed, i don't think it was clear cut either way.

For those who read '4 red cards' and think it was a blood bath, it was completely the opposite. Apart from the tackle where the Cavvy bloke got sent off there were no real malicious challenges or even any handbags. Did the referee assessor say anything about Mirko's control of the match to you guys Jeff?

Three for me, and two for them.

Oh I know you weren't, I was just saying. He moved off so it was by chance he was near us when that offside happened. Lucky at the time.

You are right in that it was not a malicious game really although there were a couple of tasty challenges that should have been blown up just for the sake of trying to keep a hold on it i.e sliding in on a terrible surface. In the first half I heard two top refs watching talking about a couple of cards that could have been given to red 15 for a complete charge and then mugging the Sports shirt off his back. There was also another one right in front of us in the 1st 20 where the Sports guy was hacked and it would have been cause for a yellow just to settle the game as it was getting a little rugged, however the ref ruled it was fair.... In that case, the Caversham player definitively chopped him

Its hard to argue with the reds as in the manner they were presented, they were red cards. I just think that a couple of yellows earlier to set a bench mark, might have stopped players later on from thinking they could follow the trend. I think the guy that was on a yellow and kicked the crap out of the Cavvy player on their goal line in the last 10 was lucky to stay on. Prince possibly had a life too. Either way, Sports lacked the discipline and really don't have much cause to complain or a squad to play Metro next week.

How did you see it Buffy?

I thought it was actually an ok game considering the state of the pitch. I described it to a mate in one txt as 'scrappy, but with plenty of chances'. On another day Sports could have easily had 3 or 4 themselves but were very wasteful in front of goal (credit to the Cavvy keeper though, thought he did well). Cavvy were clinical and always looked threatening going forward.

As for the reds, yeah i can see the reasons for them, but still huge decisions to make in such a crucial game. The Sports captain was lucky though, he mouthed off all game to the ref and lino nearest him without even a caution. In my opinion the 2 reds for challenges are without dispute but perhaps the 2 reds for dissent could of been dealt with better.

Cavvy seemed to have a lot of spirit about them too, could make a first final appearance perhaps?

Three for me, and two for them.

Possibly, but they would hope to avoid drawing Wairarapa or Bay Olympic if they fancy themselves.

Great day for a footy match.

I went to the second half of the Napier City Rovers - Manurewa match.  A great, even, seesaw of a cup tie.

When i arrived, Manurewa were 1-0 up and the locals I was hanging out with said that they had scored early, but otherwise Napier had dominated.  And that's certainly how it went for the first 15 or so minutes that I watched.  Napier were all over Manurewa but couldn't put quality into the box so kept wasting things in the top third.

Then Manurewa scored from a free kick lofted in for a good headed finish at the back post to make it 2-0.  Set pieces were their trump suit all day really with a lot of tall timber and really top notch delivery.

Manurewa's keeper opened the door a crack when he gave away a needless penalty by grabbing the ankles of a Napier player who was on the goal line going away from goal with absolutely no chance of doing anything except giving up a goal kick.  2-1.

Napier continued the stronger and a cracker of a finish low into the far corner from the edge of the box made it 2-2.

Then Manurewa found something, and proceeded to dominate a patch of the game where they hit the bar, had a couple cleared off the line, and knocked a couple of set pieces wide.  They really looked like they were going to nick it, but couldn't.

In extra time, Napier rolled over them.  Fitter probably, or better tuned up mentally.  Or both.  But it was another good finish to make it 3-2 and complete a hell of a comeback from 2-0 down.

Park Island was the worst I've ever seen it (although still pretty good to be fair), and the groundsman must have done a hell of a lot of work to get the game played on it.

Great crowd in.  The old timers in the Napier box and some of the Manurewa fans (also old timers) were giving it to each other in spades.  It was brilliant.  Two chaps in their 60s making w**ker gestures at each other and throwing out some abuse.  One of the wives started chipping in too.  Passionate.  I thought they were going to hit each other with walking sticks at one stage.  I really hope they had a beer together afterwards.

Cup football at its finest in the provinces.

In case my little summary above didn't do it for you, Anendhra Singh was in attendance so expect a vastly superior report to be published soon.

Smithy should write for the HB Today instead of Singh who is a shocker of a writer - don't know how he hasn't been sacked - nothing that he writes makes sense Rambo2011-07-25 12:21:15

A conspiracy theorist would have the two CL teams playing each other and Caversham traveling to Auckland.

It's a draw done live on-air on Radio Sport, and filmed.  How can it possibly be rigged?
