Have seen Wellington Olympic play a few times this season. They are going to be hard to beat particularly at home but it is the cup anything can happen. On top of that it is Wellington Olympic - prone to the odd implosion although I think they have been less prone under Mick Waite.

Fuck this stupid game

I'm pickin Onehunga to beat Waitakere ....waitakere are losing a few players to Aussie I believe...

Birkenhead should beat Melville although wont be much in it down there...

Cashmere will get through there games I think pretty easily....

Anybody's really..... Was surprised Bay Olympic went out the weremy fav's to take it....

Anyone know why NZF has not released the full details of why the Wairarapa appeal was turned down? NZF said on July 12 that the details would be released but gave no time frame.

Thought there might have been a bit more chat on here ahead of the quarters this weekend.

I'm hoping for a couple of upsets - my brother played at Marist for a few seasons so I would love to see them tip over Cashmere, plus Melville over Birkenhead would be another great upset, tough ask both of those though.

Waitakere with a good chance now you would have to think. Despite being 2nd bottom of Northern Prem they have their ASB Prem players back and smashed leaders Birkenhead 5 zip last week. I would not like to be drawn away to them in the next round if they beat Sports on Sunday.

Bloody old Waitakere, they do this every season, more so than Central, I'm being idealist here but I don't really want them to win on the back of players who will only play roughly a third of the season for them. Sports could topple them, it's a possibility, and one which I hope occurs.

Melville are unbeaten at home this season, I'm heading to that game but I just can't quite forecast a win, it was nice to get five goals against Glenfield but the likes of Sam Jasper and Dave Parkinson are going to be much harder to break down. 2-1 to Birko is my unbiased prediction but I would love to finally have another Hamilton side in the semis.

As for the other two quarters - what's the thoughts down in Wellington? Obviously Olympic are a good side but Cavvy are too, and they love making the semifinals. Thinking a slight Olympic victory for mine, while I think Cashmere Tech should be too good for PNM? Lots of Canty United players going against a team pushing above their weight.

Just the one Saturday game, should be a cracker, will be providing updates on Twitter for anybody interested but I'm sure there will be plenty doing the same.

Waitakere City have brought in 4 ASBP players  all off whom played for Waitakere City last season
Krishna, Butler, Myers and Turner
I think you'll find that a few clubs have more than 4 ASBP players in there squads currently
Are these players supposed to not play at all in Winter?
How many Waikato players are in Hamilton Wanderers team?
If Waikato make ASBP playoffs next season and missed start of Northern League season would you object to them playing for Wanderers or Melville at conclusion of ASB season
And do you object to Aaron Scott joining Melville halfway through this year after Waitakere Utd finished O-League
How many Hawke's Bay Utd players at Napier City Rovers
How many Otago Utd players at Caversham?
How many NZFC players at Bay Olympic?

Is there not a minimum number of games a player had to play for a team for this stage of the competition? Perhaps there should be.

The Bay Olympic comment was just pointing out that plenty of clubs have lots of ASBP players,

It wasnt suggesting that having them guarantees success quite the contrary in their case

I agree with you. I think N-Bomb thinks there is a perception that teams stack their sides for crucial games. In the past it has happened but this year, the squads have been pretty good in terms players from ASBP playing week in week out in winter league sides. As you point out, Waitakere have Krishna, Butler and Myers (I refuse to acknowledge Turner as a national league quality footballer) and they have have been there for a little while.

Haha I did say I was being idealistic, no I don't believe in certain game side-stacking. No need to overreact, all I was stating is that personally, I would like Sports to topple them this weekend, or a club who don't quite have the star players of a Waitakere-type.

Just got back from Melville v Birkenhead, and what an encounter it was.

The hosts went ahead early through Scott Hilliar (soon to be announced as a WaiBOP player), but Birko got it back almost immediately through Tuiloma, who was playing in a more advanced role. Hilliar grabbed his second direct from a corner, untouched, and Melville went into the break up 2-1, well deserved as Hilliar and Jama Boss were really locking down things in the midfield, Hobson-McVeigh and Windust couldn't get much going.

In the second spell, Melville got a cleacut pen which even the one-eyed Birko fans couldn't refute, Aaron Scott stepped up to take it, it was saved by the otherwise dodgy third string Birko keeper, but the lino ruled he was off his line, it was re-taken and Scott made no mistake. Birko fans hated that one, but gotta give the lino the benefit of the doubt, he's right on the line and made the call.

Melville started to tire after that, and Birko got a lifeline with about 15 to go through Tuiloma again after the now-stupidly haired Dan Morgan set him up, before Hobson-McVeigh got sent off for a second yellow for a blatant shirt pull. From there, Melville held on for a 3-2 victory, still undefeated at home this year.

After the game, Paul Hobson lost his nut as the ref, just like the Birko fans had been doing all day. It was Chris Kerr, and I actually thought he went alright, he called up all the niggly fouls which Birko thought were dead-set yellows, and the only real mistake of the day came when the lino flagged for a foul in the corner when it looked like Jasper got all ball. He certainly didn't affect the game's result in my eyes, Melville were just that slight bit better I thought. I'm sure this opinion is not shared by the Birko fans, but to the players' credit, they didn't result to swearing like some teams, except for the coach at the end.

So that's Chatham Cup semis 10 years apart for Melville (and Waikato as a whole), they won't be fearing anyone now, hopefully it's a home game so I don't have to face the decision of plonking some dosh on an away trip to Palmy/Welly/Canterbury/Otago.

Interesting. Once again Chris Kerr at the centre of it.

In some respects, I think this is a good thing for Birko. I think the league is more important for them at this stage of their clubs cycle. Their run home is a bit tougher than ECBs and last weeks result dropped them in a bit of a hole. It will be an interesting run home for Birko. How long does JHM get? Crucial time to lose him.

Two yellows only means he will get one week suspension. He will miss the Wanderers game next week

Went and watched Wanderers Three Kings game.wanderers missed three clear cut chances in first half but didnt take them. Three kings scored two cracking goals from about 20 metres out.they deserved to win

Three kings are a good attacking team but against a sharper attack with more pace will struggle

Permalink Permalink

Yeah I caught the first half of HW v TKU, it was so one-sided, Wanderers were threatening with their pace out wide and putting some good balls into the box but just couldn't find the final touch, Ray How probably should have done better with one which hit the crossbar, and Varela mis-controlled the ball when rounding the keeper, there was one cleared off the line from Varela, it was one-way traffic. Wanderers probably had 75% territory and were found offside several times when looking threatening too.

Then I left to go watch Melville and clearly things took a rather large turn! At least I made the right choice, Melville's match was well worth the entry fee.

I heard some swear words, nothing nasty. Pretty sure they came from the coach, happy to be proven wrong, could have been one of the mad fans around him.

By the way, this is how you respond without resorting to petty name-calling. Perfectly happy to have my recollections questioned.
