west team is mostly fading stars.
What a load of absolute b*llocks. Of the team (including substitutes) today:
4 were 15 years old
1 was 16 years old
3 were 17 years old
1 was 18 years old
1 was 19 years old
1 was 20 years old
Of the entire squad only 4 players were over 20 years old. Maybe Alan Hansen was right after all when he said you'll win nothing with kids, but maybe it's not always all about winning and at least we're trying to give some good, young footballers the opportunity to gain some experience at a very competitive level playing against some players of real quality. Hopefully they'll become better players as a result of that exposure.
Sure, the lads took a beating today, and deservedly so, because Wellington Utd were absolute quality, as Carni has already said. They could easily hold their own in the Central League and most likely will do again next season. However, despite the beating we took, Graham Little still complimented us in the after match speeches saying he liked what Wests were doing in giving the youngsters a chance to gain this kind of experience and if he had any advice to offer at all to them, it was that they should get a bit more "mongrel" in their game, even when they were several goals down. He was top quality during the game as well, both in terms of his play and the fact he was encouraging some of our youngest players to get their heads up despite the scroreline. Maybe that's easier to do when you're in the process of giving a team a spanking, but I thought it was a classy gesture nonetheless.
this league is way beyond them.
You could well be right. Let's see if you are at the end of the season.
