Must say, Keith Grosvenor is an absolute good sort.

Agree about Grosvenor, did he play up front or at the back?

What happened to Feni and Waitakere?

What's sight without sound? Love without peace? Copulation without conception?

Could be a long season for the once mighty Rams.

Looked better today against Halswell as had Chris Anderson and Alex Williams back, I think that it could be a long season. From what I have seen so far of the current bottom four, FC Twenty11 will get better, unsure my how much and Western and Halswell will pick up points / wins.

United will battle all game but if they have some injuries unsure about any real depth on the bench. In recent season United have picked up early points then it was a matter if the other caught up at seasons end, I cannot see United reaching 18 points this season.

This Dan Ede guy is amazing after reading the weekend review on the Mainland website. Check this out:

Leaders Cashmere Technical took the lead against Nelson Suburbs when Dan Ede got the final touch on a free-kick taken by Dan Ede.

sounds like that player you didn't pick who ran through an entire side twice to score Vim.

Lee is going back to the UK.

went and watched some FTC South Island today at Avonhead, tomorrow there is also ASB Park for 15's and 16's.

Are you sure?  First played in the Mainland PFL for Woolston Tech in 2007, then to Halswell, Burnside, back to Halswell and now Cashmere Technical.

Did he play this early football for The Hawks??

ChCh United could have taken the lead on 33 minutes except for Parkers flying defensive header with halswell keeper beaten, kept the score at nil nil. Poor defensive errors gave halswell all 3 goals.
Goal 1. Mix up with keeper and defender both going for same ball at the edge of penalty area, ball cleared sideways not up the pitch shot from 45 degrees out, keeper badly positioned.

Goal two. Scramble on the ground keeper not holding on to ball defenders not being positive. Slam ball anywhere keeper still on ground.

Goal3. Long throw by Parker goes to back post area header back across goal for easy header into unguarded net.

That's how I saw the goals, Halswell played way too fast in the 1st half looked much better in 2nd slowed play down.

Grosvenor played at the back. Got beaten for pace once or twice by Feni and Olea. Also spent a lot of the time in deep discussion with the referee

Can of worms time: Promotion/Relegation.

With Div 1, Nelson, and I'll include West Coast as a random outsider about to kick off, I think cards need to be on the table as to what happens in promotion relegation.

Someone told me 2012 was the last in a 3-year plan of how promotion/relegation works, so have any plans been made for 2013? And shouldn't we know as soon as we can? What if they went back to playing the 8th side in a playoff or went to a 10 team league.

Is it fair that Nelson's Div 1 has 5 teams, with 2 from the same club, plus a College team. Or does that even out the fact only one of four Chch Div 1 teams are eligible for promotion. And what if West Coast (which sounds like quite a big club geographically!) want to throw their hat in the ring?

So many questions. But you guys will have the answers. :-)

For me its something which senior clubs should have to answer when registering their div 1 club (be it in the chch, upper north island or west coast comps) a simple yes or no "we wish to compete for a MPL spot the following year". If nobody from those comps wants promotion then sweet as, no relegation. once they know clubs x, y and z wish to push for it from comps 1 & 2 mainland can lay out the format for any play off/s.

IMO this should be out by....now. But that'll never happen.

Another factor in the promo/relegation discussion will be the impact of the Nelson entry into ASB championship. What are the likely ramifications? How many suburbs players might be out of action in the early part of the season? Given the reasons for richmonds reluctance to chase an MPL spot - financial - could their focus shift to feeding the regional Nelson entry? While we're on it will Nelson take the Athletic Bilbao approach and only recruit locals or do fringe canterbury players now have another option? Luis, i know this opens a few different threads, but what's your perspective on the whole shebang?Stretford End2012-04-12 08:45:09

The reason FC Nelson has two teams is because otherwise you'd have a five team league ..Suburbs, Marlborough, Nelson College (all three can't get promoted) Richmond and FC Nelson. FC Nelson Sprig & Fern is clearly the better team though, and should be the team that wins the first division here.

Nelson College being a club is so confusing. Darrell Hannah, a MPL player from last year was then not picked for NZ Secondary School nationals because he wasn't part of FC Nelson College. Was then because Nelson College are deemed a club? or is this because the coach refused to pick someone that went to Suburbs instead. Nelson College needs to pull out of division one, and send most of the players through to FC Nelson's first division teams.

If Nelson moved into the ASB Premiership, a Nelson Bays Football editorial in the Nelson Weekly says they have made a bid, then a lot of the top players who left the region would come back. That has already started happening with the likes of Jordan Swaney, Coey Turipa, Mike Bothwell and Mike White. But then other players like Jamie Doris (NZ U-20), Sam Ayers, Billy Scott (Currently the youngest ever captain in the Central Premier League), Adam Smith, Joel Weicharn (Fmr NZ Sec Schools), potentially Tommy Lancaster would come back to Nelson. My initial thought would be they would focus on local players. This would be the cheapest option and there is plenty of talent coming out of Nelson. But you would need three starting players from outside the current Nelson Suburbs squad. Henry Fa'ardo from FC Nelson would make it, but I'm yet to see who else from outside Nelson Suburbs would. So there's a hole for three good solid ASB Premiership starters.

Because it would be picked from locals, you wouldn't have the drama of a players NOT playing Mainland Premier League once their ASB Premiership commitments are over. It's not like they're going to head to Australia and play state football once national league is over.

I guess you would want two Nelson teams in the MPL feeding to the ASB Premiership side. Otherwise there could be about 10 Suburbs players out of action for four weeks.

Here is a handful of Nelson players that could be competitive with Manawatu, Otago and Waikato.

                       Ben Wright - Gagame Feni
                       -----------------------------
Adam Smith - Billy Scott - Mike Bothwell - Mike White
--------------------------------------------------------------
Jordan Swaney - Mark Johnston - Erik Panzer/Joe Green - Jamie Doris
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                                       Coey Turipa

Throw in Sam Ayers, Matt Shaw, Wesley Olea, Henry Fa'arado, Eddie Newman, Simon Gatward-Smith, Matthew Ayloff, Alex Ridsdale and a few others and that's a squad that would be competitive against most teams.

If Nelson got in the ASB Premiership, I wouldn't be surprised if Suburbs tried to join the Central Premier League in Wellington.

Out of interest has it been report were the funding for a Nelson entry would come from, likely to cost at least $100,000 to $200,000.

Will be interesting to see if any the the current eight teams in the ASM Premiership are considering pulling out for 2013.

My picks for 2mo:

Coastal to beat Halswell 2-0
Nelson to thrash Utd 4-0
Bays 2-1 over Western
Woolston to smash FC2012 4-0

Reckon that is pretty close to the mark Vim but think Cashmere might only have the 1 goal breathing space over an improving FCX1

Appalling attempt at the use of Roman numerals! Assume you meant FCMMXI
And yes i agree a 1 goal margin is more in order. Also predict Halswell will share the spoils with Coastal otherwise Vim is spot on i reckon

Coastal lost 2-1 in the last kick of the game. Boo.

Halswell went ahead 1-0 after about half an hour and then Coastal scored with 5 to go in the game. Then had a chance to win it, only for Halswell to score in the last second.

Boo.

Just sat through the entire Richmond vs FC Nelson Sprig & Fern game. I'd be ready to book the top Christchurch side into the MPL... dreadful game. Richmond were actually in with a sniff for most of the game before FC Nelson finally broke the deadlock. If they had some Nelson College players, throw in Henry Fa'arado and they would be better, but fail to see them making the grade in the MPL.

Marlborough has also ditched itself from the Nelson first div. So FC Nelson are the only team that will go for promotion if they win it.

Still early days in the Mainland PL but Nelson Suburbs look like they will be pressing hard for a 4th title at the end of the season as seem to be getting stronger with each game, with Coastal, Bays and Cashmere Tech also in the mix. At the bottom United look like they may be battling for the wooden spoon all by thenselves.

Round 6 games
Fri: 7pm Western vs. Cashmere Technical ASB Football Park
Sat: 2.45 FC Twenty11 vs ChCh United (also a Hurley Challenge Shield game)
and Halswell vs. Ferrymead Bays
Sun: 1pm Nelson Suburbs vs. Coastal Spirit - likely to be the biggest game of the round

Bill Tuiloma - one of the standouts at the U17 World Cup, trialled at LA Galaxy Youth, is transferring to Selwyn! Back to APFA Academy?

or maybe not!
how does a transfer get denied twice?

Nelson Suburbs still waiting Michael White, Mark Johnston and Erik Panzer. How has Mark been going for Canterbury United? He seems to have become a regular starter in the team now which is great.

Yes settlled in quickly and played in 11 of the league games, plus today. I cannot recalling Mark having a bad game in Christchurch during the sumner.

Yep, Nelson will only get stronger and Cashmere will be desperate to get their Canty players back too. I see both the Cashmere PDL and Div 1 teams all lost on the weekend.

As predicted FC51CK improved again and took the points off Cashmere. Looks like they're capable of challenging anyone at present but will need to secure as many points as possible pre Canty player return.

As for Billy Tuiloma's non/ transfer, maybe he hasn't paid his subs or returned his kit ha ha. Or more likely, Selwyn jumped the gun?

Consideration should be given to the possibility of the Canty players not coming back to their clubs. With the growing chance of Canty making the O-League, and the fact that it may start before the NZFC from next year, there was talk that the Canty players would not play at all this winter season.

Which is fine by me as my club doesn't have any!

Word is that O-League window for 2013 will be either April/May or June/July so Canterbury United player's will be released once they play their last ASB Prem game for 2012.

Looks like if Canty United reach the ASB Grand Final, along with Auckland then the Final will not be on 29 April as looking at the Oceania Football Confederation Webesite as the O League final is set down for the same date:

On a brighter note NZ Football makes Mainland's running of competitions look top class.
