Chatham Cup Nelson Suburbs 8 Richmond 0. HT 3 - 0 with Richmond having three players sent off during the 2nd spell.

You know the game is in the bag when you bring on Simon Capenerhurst for Coey Turipa and take Ben Wright off for no replacement. FC Nelson will be interesting in the next round, but they only just snuck past Wakefield (a middle of the table second division team). Different story once Henry Faa'ardo can play though I guess.

Another own goal from NZ Football from their website - "The ASB Chatham Cup is one of New Zealand sport's oldest and most coveted trophies, steeped in history and tradition.......... First contested in 1923, the cup was gifted to the then New Zealand Football Association  (NZFA) in 1922 ..................... The 2011 ASB Chatham Cup is the 834th running of the competition." https://www.nzfootball.co.nz/index.php?id=962

Some interesting games in the next round:

ChCh United vs. Bays - Friday evening

Cashmere Tech vs. Coastal - the Match of the Day

FC 2011 vs Western -

Halswell vs Suburbs

so will the Cup results which saw several clubs which have struggled to score in recent weeks in the MPL bag plenty of goals - Technical, Western and FC so will this translate into a change of from.

Nope. Those results just demonstrate the gulf between the divisions.

No upsets locally with Suburbs playing Richmond on Sunday, next round on the Monday of Queen's Birthday 4 June. Also no ChCh schools entered this year which is somewhat interesting.

Down south the upset was Invercargill's Old Boys rolling premier side Green Island, with Mike McGarry's Mosgiel rolled by University which is a bit of a suprise. The big two from Dunedin, Caversham and Technical were seeded in the the next round.

They got told a few years back by mainland its a senior teams only comp, their entries stopped the year after CBHS and shirley were dropped from the mens comps.

Cup is run by NZ Football not the Federations so any team can pay and enter. I see that NZ Football are now conducting the draw from Round 1 after several cock-ups in recent years around the regions.

The federation still signs off on the cup entry though. Thats why entries were sent to mainland football with cheques payable to mainland football.

Press report on the Chatham Cup from the weekend -

"Bays out of race"

"Ferrymead Bays, one of Christchurch's best chances to lift the Chatham Cup, were knocked out in the first round on Saturday.

Bays lead the Mainland Football men's premiership after eight rounds, but they were pitted against the second-placed team in the premiership, Coastal Spirit, and were beaten 4-2.

Bays lead 2-1 at halftime after Canterbury United marksman Russell Kamo scored twice, but were outplayed in the second half as Ashley Wellbourn completed his match-winning hat-trick.

While the premier league leaders were knocked out, the last-placed side had a win. An Alan Fergusson hat-trick helped Western knock out Christchurch United 4-1.

Halswell and Cashmere Technical both had wins against division one sides. Halswell beat Nomads 2-0 while Cashmere Technical thumped Waimak United 6-0.

The biggest local win of the day went to FC Twenty11 who crushed Marlborough side Blenheim Rangers 7-0. Canterbury University beat Selwyn 3-1 while FC Nelson beat won their derby Wakefield 2-0."

Why does the Press always denigrate the efforts of everyone else except Bay$ or Ca$hmere? Surely the headling should have been "Spirit down cashed up Bays"? or similar. Bugger me the real headline should have been Bays spend $1000 to put that team on the park for the day and go out in the first round lol. And who decides at this stage of the competition who is best suited to lift the cup? Bay$ happened to be beaten by the side sitting equal with them on points which makes a mockery of that statement, at least there was an acknowledgement that Coastal outplayed them in the second half but who were the standout players? Average reporting, No wonder the Premier League has no profile locally, All you get is the goal scorers and yet again no byline. Is this info coming from one or two amateur sideline reporters with no-one actually present at the game? When Coastal went top of the league after defeating Nelson the next item in the Press was all about Tech losing league lead, no mention who to. That article didn't even list Coastal amongst the teams who make up the league, went straight from Tech to Halswell, same on the match day coverage on Radio Sport. It is not good enough for a code that plays a major part in the sporting fabric of this City. Way short of what should have been printed. It is barely a token effort from the rugby loving wankers at the Press. Only brigh spot was David Cox's radio report on Saturdays game. Rant over.

I've heard a few names mentioned from a couple of clubs. If any of the short-list I've heard mentioned are correct, it will be quite a loss to that club.

Better still, maybe he should buy me one :).

I know Tony's not the problem it's the editoral team who marginalise football every chance they get, it just pisses me off. It's bollocks.

Dunedin and Nelson, both much smaller centers, have far better coverage of the local game in the print media with a far higher percentage of column centimeters.

Some interesting games coming up in the next round of the Chatham Cup, with current form pointing to close matches between Technical and the Hawks and Western vs. FC 2011, with Suburbs and Coastal hot favourites in the other matches.

Yep however I think a PAID FULL TIME job in football will attract many candidates. Given the role, my pick is the person will already have significant coaching qualifications and experience, ie already active in coaching circles.

All the interviewed candidates fitted that criteria.

Any more clues?

I see a couple of transfers in recent days involving players that have played in Mainland Premier League, Adam Nash from Nomads to FC Twenty and Chris Chick from Bays to ChCh United.

Also see that Alex Williams ChCh United is moving to Aussie next week.

Agreed, will be someone with a big presence in coaching circles, only exception would be someone like Clapham or an ex all white.

Hey guys, newbie here. Just a bit of advice if anyone can help out. Red and yellow cards in chatham cup- do they or suspensions carry over into mpl/div 1 games? Can't find anything on mainland or nzf website. Cheers all!

They must carry over to the MPL otherwise a team that got knocked out would have no consequences (ala Richmond).

That's my thoughts anyways.

Unsure  but agree with Vim as players / coaches that have been sent off in the last game of season the Mainland Prem. League served the stand down in the opening rounds of the following season.

Good to see that Garrick Park is back in action after suffering quake damage with Cashmere Technical's game against Coastal Spirit being now played there on Saturday with a 2.30pm KO , was orginially going to be a ASB with a 5pm KO which would have suited me better as  maybe unable to get there now. Bit of a bugger as likely to be a cracker game.

Yer I was looking forward to a 5pm day/nighter, now it's a 2:30?  Random time for a MPL game.

It will be a cracker.

Welcome DC, do you support a particular local club at all? Hope you realise this is pretty much a forum for the sad lot at Coastal Spirit with the odd Western, Nomads, Tech, Nelson & Halswell supporter with a few neutrals like myself for a bit of balance. On the cards issue, in the Champions League cards applied to that particular competition, is it not the same here?

Garrick Park should be in good nick too... especially after receiving funding from Mainland Football Earthquake relief AND Woolston Club insurance payments. No double dipping I hope!

Speaking of double dipping, how bout Mainland getting $250k for a new pitch somewhere in the city (from a grant in which they administer the applications) which will no doubt clubs/groups will be charged to use!

Well definitely not from one of the 'traditional clubs'. Currently on the roster at Selwyn so not even sure this technically the right forum as it is titled Mainland Premier League. That's what we are hoping for in 4-5 years time. It's funny the comment about a forum for sad Coastal guys etc, I started reading it about 15 months ago and I got the impression it was quite a few Coastal guys were writing. One question for you Coastal lads, years ago I had a coach Keith Howard (i think surname) who apparently went to New Brighton as it was. Any news on him now? Cheers

Keith works for Mainland, he's got one of the 12 Boys FTC. Still painting too I think.
