With just two wee rounds to go of this terms MPL, I'm wondering which players would make up a fantasy league XI in the eyes of fans, coaches and fellow players? It would be interesting to see which names regularly pop up and if it would challenge the coming Dragons team. Get picking ya'll!

I've made a quick survey which gives your opinions on coach, defender, midfielder, striker of the year. Feel free to complete it if you like. I won't post individual reports just a summary this time next week. It's obviously not scientific considering the sample of people on this forum....

Here's the survey.

Vim have you posted the results as cannot locate them.

Sorry, completely forgot about this.  Here 'tis:  Survey Resutls

Halswell will be back up at the end of next season.  Selwyn will not be in the hunt again and has been found lacking in strength.

What is the go with Mainland Football wanting to make the top league a six team comp.

Could this be the way to make clubs join forces as they have been {Mainland] stating that some MPL clubs are not strong enough.

Think you're getting confused with Mainland plan for club licensing which IMO can only be better for Canterbury football. Think this may result in the clubs who make more of an investment in players , facilities and coaching reaping the rewards. Clubs may have to decide whether they want to be a part of that progression or become a community club. It makes sense that the licensed clubs will eventually attract/ develop the best players and play in the best leagues. I have no doubt that Selwyn will be one of those licensed clubs based on the criteria.

What is the criteria?

By a community club I take it you mean the likes of St Albans Shirley football club.

Maybe you and Mainland are meaning investment in players as in paying players an over inflated $$ value just to put boots on.

Is it Mainland just trying to keep things as close to the carpet as they can. Be nice to see them putting it out to the full football player base that pays the wages.

Any club regularly attending MF meetings will be better informed than those that don't. The latter will definitely be in the Community Club space.

Our club has engaged with Mainland and we have an appreciation of the areas where we need to improve to become a licensed club. This is a challenge for us but it can only help us to provide a better environment for our footballers. Agree with 10cc if you have no knowledge of this then your club is at risk of to becoming a community club. They will serve a purpose but wouldn't expect players to flock to them in the future. Can only be good for Canterbury football IMO.

How is getting rid of the likes of SAS, Hornby, Prebbleton and all the other SSL and Church based clubs good for football.

Is football only for the CashCows that want to pay players?

The club I play for may have the criteria doesn't mean the average parent or player would know about it.

I know the club has professional well educated management and have for a long number of years.

Looks like Chch United will be one and only with a stadium unless every other club goes to English park.

FIFA will create a global club licensing framework by the end of 2016, working with the six regional confederations to improve club football by setting minimum standards in key areas such as stadium safety, fan experience and youth football development.

All six confederations met for a two-day seminar at the Home of FIFA in Zurich this week to plan the full global implementation of the licensing system – the first time all confederations have met to work on the programme together.

The FIFA Club Licensing principles form the basis for the confederations’ own club licensing principles, taking into account the regional specificity of club football. Clubs then need to meet these principles to be eligible for certain competitions, adhering to international statutes, investing in training facilities and agreeing to the independent auditing of finances and greater transparency of ownership.

“Stronger clubs mean a stronger foundation for global football. Club licensing is a priority for FIFA’s investment in the game and a crucial part of raising professional standards,” said FIFA Director of Member Associations and Development Thierry Regenass. “We are now working hand-in-hand with the six confederations and our member associations worldwide to implement this blueprint for the future of football.”

The FIFA Club Licensing system requires clubs to commit to minimum standards and principles in five key areas:
• Sporting criteria e.g. clubs must have a youth development programme; clubs must promote fair play
• Infrastructure criteria e.g. clubs must have safe, comfortable stadiums for fans, families and media; clubs must have training facilities
• Personnel and administrative criteria e.g. clubs must have qualified coaches and medical staff and professional, well-educated management
• Legal criteria e.g. clubs must adhere to international statutes; club ownership must be transparent and fair
• Financial criteria e.g. independent auditing of club finances

UEFA and the AFC have established successful club licensing programmes in Europe and Asia, while FIFA is working with CONCACAF and CAF to develop and implement club licensing systems in those regions. The OFC and CONMEBOL are scheduled to ado

What absolute tripe this is for NZ we don't have any one going to watch football in NZ just playing. for fun That's IMOA

Can probably get a better sense of the NZ impact from this: https://www.nzfootball.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/20...

Possibly been updated since this was posted, but there's nothing in the criteria for a 'C' licence (i.e what a team playing in the Mainland PL or any South Island PL would need) that seems to go beyond setting some standards that the country's good clubs maintain at present.

I mean yeah ok right, Glen Laplslie is a lad and you cant fault him, but have FC really had this great season people say they have? I mean, they have some really tidy players. Heavyweight youth midfield and best #9 in the league. Pretty sure Glen has had the bulk of that team for the last 5 years and what did they achieve?

They finished higher then the Western, Halswell and Uni of season 2016 lol

Did they even beat a top four team?

Ive heard Tsetso is back at FC next year. Them youngsters gon be worked to the ground.

5 years ago some of these kids were playing U13s in the Canterbury School of Football team that Glenn coached with Terry Hall. They've since done all sorts of good things coming up through the ranks at FC, plus Canterbury FTC and representative teams - not to mention gaining promotion to MPL after being relegated - after most of the squad that was relegated walked (they lost something like 20 players I heard). To not only stay up but perform with real credit, for a young team, is, I reckon, a bloody great achievement.

And where's your sauce for Tsetso move? Are you implying he is walking away from CFA or adding another club to their roster? Front up sunshine.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

FC are a huge club with most probably the biggest junior base in the city? They never should have been in that position in the first place but yes what a great recovery.

But again, with the players they have and the time spent together there are absolutely no surprises that FC finished higher then Halswell Western and Uni who make the league a Mickey mouse league. FC did not overachieve and to be honest I think its disappointing they didnt push harder for a top four spot.

Tsetso move rumor come from an intimidating and unreliable source. But after his last year Chch United surely are not keen on him so it might be true... With Glen rumored to be stepping down.

Im so excited about the new Ferrymead coach!!! With Danny assistant we have the strongest and most experienced staff in MPL history. Couple of Unis best players are coming over to replace Ando!! PUMPED!! Ferrymead be looking to start this year the way they finished it.

How about the MPL nominations!!? Surely them silent Coastal fans be feeling pretty ripped off that Ekow isnt in the nominations? And surely every MPL midfielder may feel a little ripped of seeing Jordan in the nominations!?

Haha Wang Chan stirring that pot. Whats good? Come at me

Yes FC beat a team in the top four.

Word around town this the a new coach is heading to Yaldhurst Rd - European,  so unsure what this will mean for Tsetso.

Hear that Johan Verweij is coming back to coaching so make sense if he links back up with Danny Halligan as they have coached together over the years, both at ChCh United when the MPL started.

I know Ando was good but two player to replaced him?

I think Jordan Halligan had a great season and fully deserves his nomination and I am somewhat surprised he was not looked at by Canterbury United.

FROM THE SUFC FACEBOOK PAGE

------- ANNOUNCEMENT -----

SUFC appoints Director of Football

-----------------------------------

SUFC is delighted to announce Lee Padmore as our brand new Director of Football.

Many members will already know Lee from the fantastic work he has done around the club since joining in 2013. Over the past 3 years Lee has committed an unbelievable amount of voluntary hours to the club developing players, coaches, parents and even the odd referee with his unique yet effective style.

The newly created role at Selwyn United recognises the fast evolving footballing landscape in New Zealand in which New Zealand Football (NZF) is looking to implement a Licensed Club model. This model will clearly differentiate between the largely ‘winter season’ only traditional community/participation focussed clubs, and a small number Licensed Clubs operating throughout the calendar year and across the spectrum of football products, player participation and talent development.

Club President, Gerard de Rooy mentioned ‘SUFC has been pushing the envelope for the betterment of footballing opportunities in our fast growing district for some years now, and we have come a very long way in a very short time. The responses rate and quality of feedback we gained from our recent survey has given us a very clear idea as to where our membership would like to see their club in the future. Where at times it feels we are merely trying to keep up, we have a number of very passionate and talented people within our club that deserve more support and a concerted effort in ensuring SUFC is sustainable long term. This requires close collaboration between all stakeholders within the club, NZF, Mainland Football, Selwyn District Council, and schools in our district. Between Lee and Martin Allen, our Sports Development Officer, we have a formidable team to progress our club to the next stage of development’.

As well as being highly qualified and experienced in the field of development in football, Lee also brings a unique drive and passion for the game that is unrivalled in the region.

Lee’s immediate jobs will be to progress SUFC’s strategic plan ‘Towards 2020’ and review all football products within the club to ensure they meet the needs of our membership now and in the future. Whilst continuing to manage the clubs 1st team and talent pathways, he will have full overall responsibility for all ‘on field’ activities and working with NZF/Mainland Football to align these with their Youth framework.

SUFC’s new Director of Football said ‘I am absolutely delighted to take on this role. Selwyn United has been a huge part of my life for 3 years now and I am completely embedded in to the culture, success and long term vision of the club. My aim is to bring success to the club at the very top but also to inspire every player, whatever their ability, to develop and succeed in a pathway that is ideal for them.’

Regards,

The Selwyn United Board

Pics and report on the abysmal performance by the Mainland Futsal mens team in Dunedin.

https://footballsouthnz.co.nz/Futsal2016/2016%20Nat...

Two spankings and lucky Southern took the foot off at what 6 nil up in the Sunday game.

Big ups [NOT] to the Mainland Dragons Futsal staff and executive for charging players $150 just to train in the wider squad.

Just trying to make a cash cow form some average players [exclude Lapslies} to get a team together.

Nothing wrong with players paying their way but that sum is a rip off as is the new revamped format.

A school gym hire on a regular basis would cost a squad of 20 players $2.50each for 90 mins session x 4 trainings a week x 10 weeks still leaves a lot of change left over for staff wages.  .

Question is are the SSPL Dragons going to be asked to pay to be part of a training squad?

This is the latest from THE Mainland website.

Cannot see NZ having another team on the A League but certainly aiming for the NZ Premiership in two years times once the current licences expire.

Sad to read the passing of Ivan Steer in The Press today. Ivan was a champion of the Shamrock club and long time member on the  Canterbury Junior Football Association, Canterbury Football Association and former Patron of Mainland Football. RIP Ivan

Permalink Permalink

Sad news. Ivan was a massive contributor to Canterbury football. Will be remembered by all the Cantebury under 12 players who played under him and who were constantly reminded of the legacy of that Canterbury age group and the standard that was required. Ivan knew how to get the best out of individuals and the team. In my year in under 12,s we went into the final round robin game a point behind Otago and had to win to keep the title. He convinced us that our strength was in our attack so played a 3 - 2 - 5 formation. We scored two early and held on to beat Otago 2-1 to win the tournament. He made us believe that it would happen.

Ivan took many Canterbury underage rep teams team overseas and was always at the forefront of fundraising efforts to get them there.  He was a huge part of the Canterbury Junior Football Association which ran junior football on a volunteer basis from the 1960's to about the 1990's. As Gavin has commented he was a major contriburtor to Shamrock and then later the CFA, senior body of Canterbury football. In my humble opinion he will go down in Canterbury football as a true legend of the game. Best wishes Briar and family. RIP Ivan

Copied from UC Football Club facebook page:

Universities is proud to announce Jesse Rawlings as the new Head Coach of our MPL side. He will be joined by Tyler Logan as his assistant. Jesse is a third-year sports coaching student who coached the Reserves team last season. Having already worked with the MPL squad and his understanding of the culture of UC Football we believe Jesse is the right man to continue the significant progress we have made as a club over the last five years.

In taking on the role, Jesse wanted to ...say a few words.

“I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to coach the Universities MPL team. I have a lot of respect and admiration for this club and I want nothing more than to see the club and those who represent it succeed. We have a proud recent history of developing players, coaches and support staff who have gone on to higher honours with the Canterbury United Dragons and the Wellington Phoenix, and this is something we must continue to strive toward. We have some very exciting young players at the club, so the potential is there to be realized.
We are also very fortunate at Universities to have access to the Video Analysis and Strength and Conditioning support, and we must utilize these advantages with a view to be challenging for the MPL title in the near future."

We wish him and the team all the best for the upcoming season.

If you are interested in trialing for the Men’s Premier League squad please email Jesse at vicepresident.ucafc@gmail.com, or send us a message.
