And I will say, Levin Pitches have been the best in the area for the past 10+ years.
Feilding
A growing club who seem to have added a senior team each season the last few years, up to seven men's teams now. 1st team in a transition period for a couple of years now, having won the Manawatu Prems prior to Covid but choosing not to go to Fed League, an exodus of players causing a bit of a drop off.
They started last year with a new coach and their B's moving up to 1st team. Thought they would grow into this year and have been a bit surprised by their start in the league as they looked pretty good in preseason, although their 2 nil loss up at Moturoa on the weekend is a big improvement on being spanked 10 - 1 by them at home last year. Hart twins down the left hand side are very handy.
Lucky compared to the Palmy clubs in that their clubrooms are at their ground, seems like they've moved the pitches over the summer - it used to be a massive trek to the other side of Timona Park to their number 1 pitch (which was also awful). Cheap beer and a good feed so nice place to visit.

I'll try and be as unbiased as possible, be interesting if you guys can guess what club I am at when I finish 🤣
I'm also in the Manawatu, its good to see some local flavor being added on here. There is a lot of Footy happening here and overall its growing which is brilliant.
The central region is a really tough environment to bring together a truely competitive top tier with how split we are as a region and there are some entrenched club lines. What PNU did bringing together 3 clubs to build a strong base was excellent to try and bridge some of those, how thats evolved and will continue to evolve as a "Club" will be interesting in the future.
I think it is a really exciting time to be involved in footy especially in the Manawatu. I really hope that PNU manage to keep it together as I said above I really enjoy watching them play, and they keep churning out quality local young players.
I have been a bit controversial on here as I am strongly against the approach Whanganui Athletic took last year especially - I don't think we grow footy in this country by importing lower league semi-pros at the expense of our own young players. If their imports turned out to be Ryan Holdens sticking it out for years and years I'd think differently, but they have pretty much brought a different batch of six the last two seasons.
Nice to see they have been playing a few youngsters so far this year though!

Rapidly growing. They have benefited a couple of times over the years from an exodus with Marist so this summer's moves are not a surprise. Suffer a bit from their clubrooms being quite far from their usual playing venue at Skoglund but still manage to maintain a bunch of social teams. Seem to be deepening links to local high schools who have been left behind by the Boys High footy behemoth, which will probably be a smart strategy in the long term. Do really well with limited resources.

At first team level they play defensively solid, counter attacking footy. Probably over-reliant on a couple of players especially Michael Whitmore up front, and they don’t seem to change much year to year. Very tough game for them this week against Levin.

As Bootlegger pointed out a few weeks ago I know fuck all about Athletic so I won't do them.
It's hard to know much about the Naki teams from down here, so I'll leave it to someone else to summarise what's going on with them if anyone can be bothered 🤣

Agreed! Last year was particularly frustrating given players like Charlie Meredith and others ended up signing for Wanganui City FC after all the imports came in.
For some teams like Gisborne Thistle, as an example, it does make sense. Especially in regional areas where the player base is so thin. I'd argue it's better to have these players come in, ensure the team can player at the highest level available, and then leave when young players coming through are ready to play at that level. Athletic have always been miserable to play against so that doesn't help. Exposing young players to the standards of the imports can help, but only if it's done right.

Athletic:
I’ll debunk a few rumours as I go.
Region as a whole is decreasing every year less social teams than ever before. All 3 clubs struggling for social and youth players.
Rockets are a mean team built on drinks after the game and having a laugh but a good team too.
Only 2 Men and Woman’s social teams and 1 masters for us. Lost the lions (3rd Men’s team) and love and learn (Woman’s) this year.
2025 Azza came in as Dof as most of the senior players wanted a more professional setup. Initially wasn’t taken too well firstly he’s very opinionated and controlling then with his agressive personality and 4 nights a week training and telling players if they played other sports and missed pre season training they wouldn’t be selected for first team. After that though once you understand how weirdly obsessed he is about football and how much he cared about the club it changed. He’s at Wembley every night training all the junior teams woman’s and men. When it rains he takes them inside and runs classroom sessions that eat into our drinks time after training which is annoying haha. Think he rubs people up the wrong way sometimes but he’s a good buggar always willing to help out with things around the club. The juniors look good they all play a good brand of footy and there’s a style of play through the club all the way down to the kids.
On the imports he’s says all the time it helps the young players rather than blocks them. He thinks being able to train with these guys 3/4 times a week and playing at the weekend makes them better and has actually played more young players in the senior teams than I’ve seen here for a long time. Doesn’t favour them either as big Vic last year was on the bench and in reserves a lot and Aristotle and Mike haven’t started a game yet this year either. Last year they lived in a gym club and where working at affco don’t know where they are now but they definitely can’t be getting paid by the club unless Azza pays them himself.
Last years imports where great lads, no arrogance and always happy to have a chat in the clubbies after the games this years boys are more reserved but never rude. We all loved Noony but I can see why everyone else hated him he’s one of those type of lads. But around our club members and kids/young lads he was great gave lots of advice and support.
Steve Meredith Charlie and Ryan’s dad went to city last year and took a lot of our young players over that were part of his high school teams that where loyal to him. Athletic let him leave after U19s in 2024 which was a mistake.
Ressies will struggle this year with the young boys moved up to first team and a few of the experienced ones doing other things. But it’s always been the same here when the young ones get to 18/19 they move away to study work and travel.
First team
Look like they’ll win the league again can’t see much competition in the west. With there attackers scoring goals but may concede goals with the young boys playing at the back.
The test will be playoffs again playing better teams after coasting all year.

They should really be in CL2. The massive drop off in Fed league after the relegation from CL killed that hope. Will be interesting to see what playoffs look like this year with the introduction of NL and there potentially being 4 or 5 spots in 2027 CL2 available with clubs moving up. Hearing rumors of NL reserve sides being allowed in to CL2 but nothing concrete. Praying that they'll just promote the top two club sides from Cap Prem and then the winners of East and West Prems but who knows.

East Prem games this week:
Taradale Prems vs Western Rangers, Taradale Park, Sat 1pm
Both teams with their first points of the year. Taradale have looked competitive in all of their games, Rangers struggling a little more but a good point for them last week. Would back Dale to get the three points in this one.
Gisborne Thistle vs Maycenvale United, Childers Road, Sat 2:45pm
Thistle with a tough away loss but apparently showed glimpses of quality. Vale with a draw against their rivals. Unsure how well Vale will travel and expecting Thistle to be fired up in their first home game since the derby thrashing. Thistle to win this one.
Rovers Prems vs Port Hill United, Bluewater Stadium, Sat 3pm
Rovers with a tough away game in Gizzy, Port Hill with a dramatic point against Dale. Hard to pick this one so will go with a draw.
Havelock North Wanderers vs Gisborne United, Guthrie Park, Sat 3pm
Both teams coming off big wins at home last weekend. This could prove to be an early title decider as no one quite looks to be at their level this season. United have good depth for the first time in years so should travel well. Very hard to pick a winner so will go for a draw in this one as well.

Eastern Prem results:
Taradale Prems 2-1 Western Rangers
Gisborne Thistle 2-0 Maycenvale
Napier City Rovers Prems 1-2
Havelock North Wanderers 2-2 Gisborne United
No shock results this week. Looking like the title will be decided by the Gisborne United vs Havelock game up there in the second round, can't see either of them losing to any of the other teams in the league. Thistle with their first home win of the season and dishing out Vale's first loss. Port Hill and Dale with solid wins this week as well.

I agree that it will come down to Gisborne United and Havelock North in the end, but I honestly think both teams will drop points this year. The league is surprisingly tight. I certainly don’t think thistle are as bad as their opening game. Other results suggest the league will be very close.
Gisborne United will be an absolute force at home and I can’t see many teams taking points off them at Harry Barker, but I think they may drop points if teams like Maycenvale or Port Hill can surprise them at home.
Havelock will not concede many goals, but if they don’t put teams away early I think they may drop points here and there. Particularly away from Guthrie Park.

In this case it's more that a few chickens are coming home to roost with Marist. There seems to be a lot of resentment around the DoF being brought in from overseas on a full-time salary when lower down the club they feed off scraps.
Very aggressive in headhunting from other clubs in the past, as well as having by far the largest number of teams and players in the region, they're not very well liked by everyone else. Combine that with the Director of Football deciding to clean house and tell a bunch of players and coaches they are not needed and it's a recipe for disaster. Bit of a closed shop in their 1st team so it's known that pathways are almost non-existent so it's not super attractive to join them lower down the grades.
Their women's section is fucked. Lost a bunch of 1st team players to PNU, overseas, and just left the game. Their Reserves were supposed to be part of the new Fed League, but they must have realised they would be uncompetitive so they pulled out. Then they were part of the Manawatu Championship but couldn't get through preseason friendlies without social grade players, and basically disbanded their Reserve team.
On the men's side, they got rid of their Reserves and third team coaches, and all 99% of the players went with those blokes to Takaro. Takaro's reserve team in the Manawatu Champs is basically last years Marist Reserves team from Western Prems. A couple of social grade teams have also switched over to Takaro. Marist have gone from having teams in every division, with multiple teams in most of the social grades, to not even having teams in the Champs and Div 2. Current Reserve team in the Prems are basically a bunch of schoolkids from their academy, which has been overtaken by PNU.
Takaro have overtaken them now, and Feilding are very close behind them in terms of numbers.
Can't argue with any of this. I think the big problem with Marist is the lack of football knowledge in the club. The first team is full of talent, but coaching has been poor for several years, but no one at the club realizes it.
