AFc to also have an owner called Rob one day

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360980684/everything-thats-stake-auckland-fc-massive-week-new-zealand-football

One interested party who isn’t set to be there is Auckland’s American billionaire backer Bill Foley, whose chief sporting interest, the Vegas Golden Knights ice hockey team, have NHL conference finals games against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, Saturday and Monday (NZ time).

“His son Rob’s definitely coming down,” Becker said. “Obviously, the Vegas Golden Knights are deep, deep into the Stanley Cup finals, which are at exactly the same time as ours. Being based in Vegas, I'd say Bill's probably going to stay there.”

it wouldn't be that hard to implement a single click link for members rather than a code to prevent this type of thing.

Also given that AFC is the first NZ team to host a GF, doesn't suprise me about the demand.

I do agree, see the top post of the previous page... =)

I think there's two issues:
1. Members not getting their seats (I think is a ticketmaster limitation because we did in season 1). This is still crap but I haven't read of members who have literally missed out.
2. People who go to games regularly who have missed out. I don't have that much sympathy for these people.

Don't get me wrong the link/code is a rubbish system but also yeah... popular things are popular.

for mine, if you are a paid up season pass member then you should get first opportunity to purchase your seat for the finals, those "casual" regular attendees cant expect anything. Members are guaranteed income for the club, casuals who buy their ticket on the day are just cream on the top - even if they do come every home game.

Auckland transport ought to be able to put on special train or bus services.

And it’s at the weekend. Have it at a time that’s going to be good for football. 6:30, latest. If it’s wet and cold, goes to extra time, and there’s 3 thousand people looking for a spot on a bus for 30, that’s ludicrous for a plywood has a rail connection.

What do they doing it’s in Perth? Make them play at the heat of midday or something so it can screen in Sydney?
the wahs kick off at 8pm when they play on a friday at Mt Smart and nobody cares.

Get over the start time, as someone said it's an Australian comp, we are lucky to have two teams in there for starters.
It’s not a charity: they take our money. It’s not luck. Oh thank you Sir Robbie Slater.

It’s your league needs our dosh and here’s a market for you.

I'd wonder if the marketing boffins at AFC spotting the revenue opportunity, and offering non-ticket memberships similar to what the English clubs do.

United does me for $50 a year and in return I get a "free" beanie, pen, and rights to buy tickets (just in case) ....

Nix used to do that. Or something similar. Benchwarmer membership…well I think you got 3 tickets, a scarf and something else- fridge magnet or something like that…

Then they had a northern membership for games in Auckland…

Well nothing like priority reservation which is your conversation!

Auckland FC’s director of football, Terry McFlynn, says arch rivals Wellington Phoenix have been in touch ahead of Saturday’s men’s A-League grand final.

As Auckland FC prepare for their showdown with McFlynn’s former club, Sydney, he shared an email exchange with his Phoenix counterpart, director of football Shaun Gill.

“There’s a rivalry between the two clubs, but in our positions, we’ve got a duty to football in this country,” McFlynn explained on the latest episode of football show The Unused Subs.

“That’s boys and girls, and it’s to create opportunities, create pathways.”

McFlynn said he emailed Gill to congratulate him on the Phoenix women’s A-League season, in which the club reached the grand final and the finals series for the first time.

“I think on another day, they could have won that grand final. I think the second half, they were fantastic,” McFlynn said.

“You know, Wellington Phoenix in the women’s grand final; Auckland FC in the A-League men’s grand final.

“It’s great for football in this country.

“So, yeah, they (Phoenix) have been in touch, and they did wish us well.”

And how did McFlynn respond?

“Thank you,” he said.

Yup AFC having been running something similar to this - also had a advert ahead of the members pre-sale window saying if you brought a 26/27 membership that you would be eligible for the finals pre-sale.  so yeah trying to maximise the opportunity.

Lachie Bayliss in the reserves. Devenish-Meares named skipper.
D-M was absolutely huge for SFC against the Jets. I think he's playing better than even Paulsen was his last two ALM seasons Nix & AFC.

Devenish a big obstacle to Auckland winning the GF.

Sydney goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares was named captain of the side after receiving the most votes from fellow professionals.

“Just being part of the professional football community in Australia means the world to me, so to be named captain of the Team of the Season feels very humbling and honestly quite surreal,” Devenish-Meares said.

“To be recognised by my peers in this way is something I’m incredibly grateful for.”

Newcastle coach Mark Milligan was voted coach of the season after guiding the Jets to two trophies in his first year in charge.

Goalkeeper
Harrison Devenish-Meares (Sydney).

Defenders
Nathaniel Atkinson (Melbourne City), Panagiotis Kikianis (Adelaide United), Mark Natta (Newcastle Jets), Francis de Vries (Auckland FC).

Midfielders
Ethan Alagich (Adelaide United), Max Burgess (Newcastle Jets), Juan Mata (Melbourne Victory).

Forwards
Clayton Taylor (Newcastle Jets), Sam Cosgrove (Auckland FC), Jesse Randall (Auckland FC).

Substitutes
James Delianov (Newcastle Jets), Daniel Wilmering (Newcastle Jets), Aziz Behich (Melbourne City), Lachlan Bayliss (Newcastle Jets), Paul Okon-Engstler (Sydney), Eli Adams (Newcastle Jets), Marcus Younis (Melbourne City).

Head coach
Mark Milligan (Newcastle Jets)

Better than Paulsen's Auckland season, sure, but Paulsen's Nix season imo was far and away better than any A-League GK season we've seen so far. Would take something mindboggling to touch that

"Benchwarmer membership" was very useful for those of us like myself who would only very occasionally fly from Christchurch to Wellington to attend a game in person.

It’s really difficult to tell how many of those Reddit Cosgrove haters are Nix fans or general Australian fans.

But yes, he appears to be fairly hated.

It’s interesting however he made the team of the year from the players.

It's not rocket science.
a) he's a shit stirrer (fans and players alike)
b) he flops
c) dark arts merchant (see point a)
d) he gets away with points b and c
e) he plays for AFC which automatically adds to the dislike factor

Watch the end of the AFC v Melbourne City elimination final. Post Hall’s pen going in, the AFC players pile in on Hall and the MC keeper gets a bit of accidental bumping. Cosgrove is the one who stops and tries to move the keeper out of harm’s way

He’s a pantomime villain character not a cod. If he’s in your team you love him for what he is aka Siggie for Nix fans

Pantomime villain characters like Cosgrove, Berisha etc have been great for the A League. They bring interest, media attention and draw the fans in. The comp would be sterile without them.

Your Kevin Muscats though who go out looking to break an opponent’s leg belong in the cod class

I think a lot can be read from the way a player appears in post-game interviews.

Cosgrove appears measured and affable. Says good things about the opposition (in moderation!) and praises his teammates.
He leaves all the trickery behind - on the park where it belongs.  So I decided to cut him a lot of slack. That's just football.

In contrast, someone like Craig Goodwin regularly sounds like a whining whinging cod in post-game interviews, complaining about bad referees and suggesting that the opposition got away with murder. Unlikeable.
This does not change the fact that Goodwin is an excellent footballer with a stellar career and some great skills.

I was impressed when he came on against Victory and defended like he was Kante. Slight exaggeration, but not much.

Should never have got the pens against us that he did, but that’s the refs fault, not his.

Agreed. He was touch and go to appear against Adelaide, what with a minor issue of snapped ankle ligaments, but he turned up and defended like a man possessed.  Did not sprint much. That is a quality player.

So is today the biggest game for club football ever in NZ?

If it’s a win for AFC, those feel good vibes will last for a very long time.

However, their form this year has been poor to middling, with the occasional excellant game thrown in there (the last game away to the Nix and the away semi against Adelaide)

Their best provider  of goals is unlikely to be fit enough to start and with injuries the side is now playing a formation which while it worked last week, hasn’t been brought out too often. Normally players like Howieson in the side and Elliot playing at left wing back wouldn’t inspire great confidence. However with injuries, fitness concerns and the fact it worked last week, it will be rolled out again. Will it work two times?

Likely to be a tough, ugly game against the best defence of the league.

In such games, the first scorer is going to be crucial (even more importantly for AFC, considering over two years and over 50 games, they have never ever came from behind to win a game of football!)

They broke a duck last week, receiving their first ever penalty in two years against an Australian team.

Hopefully they can also overcome this second little problem if they go behind.

So far in their short existence they have taken away a minor premiership from the Australian clubs, now the hosting of a grand final.

Just one more to rub the Australians faces in it.

Yep. Whoever scores first will win the game. Probably only one goal in it. Finals are normally tight competetive matches. Dont expect a goal fest.
Im picking AFC....but it will be a very close thing.
Great time to be a NZ football fan. Nix women reach grand final, AFC the same and then the WC kicks off....

@AucklandPhoenix - disagree about Elliot.  He proved to be an excellent backup option to both Sakai (while not in the same class of player) and then later very useful backup to deVries for left fullback duties. Not a ball crosser like de Vries, but more nimble in defence.

Yes, Corica is very unlikeable (to anyone who doesn't support the club he is at) and he has made the club in his image. AFC will never be anybody's second team (unless you live in or otherwise have strong connections to the city of Auckland).

And to those "Phoenix fans" who have any sympathy for AFC and want them to win for any reason, I am sorry, you're not really a Nix fan. The most you are allowed to do is cope by acknowledging that them doing well is good for NZ football in general, in an attempt to dull the pain.

I've lived in Welly, but am not from the capital. I've lived in many different places around Aotearoa.

I supported the Nix as they were the only NZ team in the ALM. That would be the same for thousands of other Nix fans, including many from Auckland.

So for sure you can be a Nix fan, and still wish AFC well against Australian clubs, especially Sydney.

If you are yes a born & bred Wellingtonian, who has never lived anywhere else in NZ you will likely feel different. And that's fine. It's just an innate feeling you have one way or the other, that no one but you can decide upon.

NZ ain't the UK (or most football mad countries) where club rivalries go back often 100+ years. Comparisons to how a Liverpool fan would never support Everton etc are pointless.

Agree this isnt the UK, im a 70 year old who was brought up  in Wellington and lived in Auckland for 7 years. Growing up there was a very strong provincal rivalry which at times had  much passion. Maybe not as strong as some of the club rivalry  in the UK but just dont get why some say it isnt here in NZ.
Its for that reason i wont cheer Auckland on to win anything tiddlywinks football or what ever. Makes laugh when i hear people say if your  a Nix fan tou should be support AFC when we arnt playing them. To me thats akin to telling a Liverpool supporter to support United when they get back to Europe.
There most definatly are rivalrys in NZ its just many of them are based on provincal or school fixtures but they are there and yes some of them do go back more than 100 years.
