2016/17 Transfer Speculation

the Lia experience arguement is getting a little old and tired - much like him, he's slow, not that good at passing the ball forward. As a squad player I'd be happy to have him around but as a starter? no way!

80% pass accuracy, 42% of passes are forward.

Seeing plenty of player signings throughout the league so far... I hope I'm not the only one getting itchy feet, would be nice to see a signing pretty soon.

yeh- he's great at hitting those big diagonal cross fielders...

Resign him, for sure, but as a squaddie.

Whether or not people like him, he does a job for us and if it comes down to it and injuries do us over, I'd rather have someone like him to slot in instead of a kid.

I wouldn't think there would be too many clubs chasing him either, but I think he should definitely stay

I am not disagreeing with what you said but still think Lia should be re-signed.

Lia's strength is not in speed or mobility, but he was an excellent "babysitter" to Riera when he played next to him. I would argue that a lot of Riera's success came from having Lia covering his backside.

Sure, Lia is older now, but only as old as Durante.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Lia is never afraid to tackle and often plays with a yellow card begging, yet over the last 2 seasons, his cards have declined markedly. I think another season would be a good thing. This also allows A Rod a chance to fully establish the DM for himself as Lia can be his mentor. With siggy gone, his replacement will be needing to figure out the guys around himself unless A Rod is going to move there with Roly dropping back into DM  ?

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Is that because they go round him so fast he can't even drag them down? But true Riera has seemed more of a card risk than Lia, but Lia still has had some silly ones

With Siggy, Manny, and now Riera gone, I think Lia still has a part to play. Might not necessarily be on game day, but certainly on the training pitch in more of a mentoring role/setting an example for the younger guys. I know from my own experience the value having more experienced team mates who have 'been there and done that' before can't be emphasised enough. Siggy, Riera and Manny leave with 440 games between them, and I don't think we can afford another player with nearly 200 games played to go as well. There needs to be a good mix of experience and youth in the team.

Based on what? the promise he showed as a 17yr old when playing as a striker... or on his efforts playing in the USL that were good enough to not have him resigned.

He has had moments within games, but is yet to have a season at a decent level to suggest signing him would some how improve our lot. I like his engine, but bar for age I fail to see what he offers above and beyond what Lia currently does.

He was okay for ACFC but not special. Played a different role to Riera there as well

Fuck this stupid game

Musa is playing mainly as a DM for Saint Louis. I'd sign him before Payne for the midfield role and as a plus he's also a CB.

I am not trying to erect a temple to worship Lia - by a long shot - but I think Lia needs recognition for what he can still offer, which is awareness, vision and positioning, rather than speed, high skill and agility.  It is up to the club to decide if this means a reduced offer or not; but to me Lia's value has increased the moment Riera retired (and the opposite would have been the same).

We have plenty of midfield options. Priority is defence - now using a visa spot. Where in the world is Ernie shopping?

Maybe Ernie is shopping in Germany. Don't all Germans love NZ?

Or, how is Michael Fitzgerald going in Japan, is he ready to head home?

The Lia debate is interesting. I personally think he's looked a lot better under Ernie than he ever did under Ricki, and I'd keep him. His passing, positioning and decision making have all improved in the last few years IMO. Wouldn't have him as a starter but brings more than enough too be a useful squad player now Riera has gone

marco      krishna      kosta

            finkler    roly

                  alex

doyle    durante  fox/import   louis/musa

When does Marco's contract run out? I have my doubts about whether he'd want to come back, and if he did, he might want to got to MV.

It would work though. WeeMac would be delighted.

He can do the Vicelich hold-a-spot-in-the-middle- role from the 2010 WC! No movement required.
