I like the people who don't want it at petone rec, but then go on to suggest other sites in other parts of the Hutt and Wellington.

Anyone planning to attend the WelNix presentation to the HCC tomorrow morning? Starting at 9.30am.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I was quite intrigued by the NZ Post building suggestion (there are some benefits at having it there), however I'm not sure on its suitability due to the shape of the land it is on (might be able to squeeze the stadium on there). I would also think it would cost more if the land would have to be purchased and existing buildings knocked down and due to its closeness to the Petone interchange (in its current state) would cause more traffic issues (if this goes ahead: Link to ease Petone pinch then traffic would not be as big a problem)

At the meeting a guy told me he doesn't want a new stadium on the Rec but he wants it in Petone. NIMBY?

What about the old Hutt Valley High School site, right by Ava station. Only thing there is vandelised or burned down buildings. Flatten the site and redevelop it.

It is - Ryman Healthcare announced this week it would spend more than $100 million building its 28th retirement care village on the 3.3 hectare site.

Money to be made out of old folk. Masonic Rest Home have started a big addition and Summerset are due to start soon on a new rest home on part of the Boulcott Golf Course.

Shame. I hope the vandals stay away. Is a great site and the playing field that used to be there was an excellent surface.

NZ post site would be cost prohibitive compared to council park land

Incidentally NZ Post are also soon to be vacating another site further down the esplanade (little known as it is not NZ Post branded). It is a larger site and is for sale - corner of victoria st and the esplanade, with the 2 story black building and a taller green building in the carpark.

It was actually owned by Terry and is now run by the bank that took it off him.

Obviously not really viable either but worth mentioning nonetheless

Isn't it a requirement that a certain amount of carparking is made available for any new stadium? I could be completely wrong but I thought I remember that when they built Baypark in Mount Maunganui and probably why the RoF has so much carparking.

I have no idea if it's a legal requirement but I'm pretty sure they have it in hand and it won't be at the expense of the important 'green space'

From what I just read, it does appear they need to provide car parking.

They will absolutely have to provide some parking. The question is how much.

I wonder if it were a rugby team constructing this stadium, how many of these such people would be all for the idea.

I thought the same thing - if we had announced the plans in partnership with Wellington Rugby I suspect there would be a lot less criticism.

Two comments from last night's meeting. I have six pages of them.

  • The Rec is the equivalent of central park in New York and should be treated as such

  • There is no other green space in the centre of Petone and it is sheltered

Sheltered???

One more -

  • Does Council care about the safety of our children?

In order to counter all of this opposition when PUBLIC SUBMISSIONS are called for those in favour will need to have clear and cogent arguments prepared.

p.s.

As the Mayor reminded us, anyone is welcome to attend the meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 26 February, 9.30am in the  Lower Hutt Council Chambers, 2nd floor. All the city councillors will be there and four community speakers from our meeting will cover the key issues from last night during public speaking time in the first half hour. There will then be presentations from a couple of other groups before the Community Facilities Trust makes a presentation about the Petone stadium proposal. It is worthwhile to show community interest by attending just to listen, so if you are free, please go along.

Do they want me to list the other green spaces in Petone.

Someone on Facebook had the nerve to claim it was the only recreation space...

One said it was the only green space. Then went on to say that everyone is confusing it with petone memorial.

Um, isn't that another green space?

Building a new medium-sized stadium in Petone would not cure the ills of Wellington Phoenix and it's not what the region needs, event promoters say.

So much this. If they'd got Andy Leslie or Alan Hewson alongside them at the launch. Would have been a boost.

From the end of the Transport PDF.

CULTURAL AND SPORTING

Places of assembly and sporting facilities

 0.2 spectator

and 1 staff member or participant

So if we're working on 12,000 spectators, that could be up to 2400 car parks?
That's a decent sized parking building.
