I wonder if it were a rugby team constructing this stadium, how many of these such people would be all for the idea.

I thought the same thing - if we had announced the plans in partnership with Wellington Rugby I suspect there would be a lot less criticism.

Cant wait to walk through Jackson Street in my stripey on match day 3 years from now, chanting my nimby chant that ive yet to create but will probably create soon
Should try to rhyme "Not in my backyard" with "tard"

They have missed a real opportunity to go on the front foot with petone Rugby.

So much this. If they'd got Andy Leslie or Alan Hewson alongside them at the launch. Would have been a boost.

I suggested exactly that to GM... Marty L even mentioned on the NIMBY bookface page he thinks it's a great idea. Hopefully someone is onto these things... Workers club as well. Get those two groups on board - and bang on about the irrationality of the NIMBY's as per the front of the Hutt News and we may see a little more balance and hopefully realism come into the debate.

"I spoke to a friend In ngaio who said they wouldn't make the trip for games. Therefore no parent in their right mind would make the trip"

"I spoke to a friend in kapiti who thought it was petone memorial. Therefore most people think its petone memorial"

Also...Why is petone memorial ok, but not petone rec?

Nimby.

Also, its a 'soccer ground' not a rugby or a league ground.

Interesting.

It's hard to fight that impression when the rugby people haven't committed to playing games there yet.

Anyone go to the Council meeting this morning, or heard what happened with the $25M getting into the Council budget?

I suppose Petone Memorial is surrounded mostly by Shandon Golf Course, Sladden Park (Hutt River floodplain) and the now closed Petone College rather than (their) houses, is closer to the Ava train station - though road access is far worse. Petone Rec is a nicer location

Memorial is also well away from Jackson St. which is one of the key selling points for a Petone venue.

Also Weltec, and also further away from the "proposed" hotel development/s.

Memorial Park would be a disaster. Traffic was bad enough when a couple of hundred went there for a Nix preseason game.

memorial number one is now an artificial deck right - can't see the council ripping that up after just having it layed.

Trevor Mallard, a little flippantly I think, has suggested North Park.

Today at HCC - http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/hutt-valley/9766489/Hutt-Council-asked-to-back-Petone-stadium

and so the process starts.

Be fascinating to understand the motivations of Carl Bakker, see article. He runs the Petone Urban Environment Association (PUEA). They stifled the PWMC development. Friend notes that they were, as far as she can tell, silent on the Ryman aged care village over on the old 'Petone Tech' site.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Some of the subjects covered in that meeting.  Wow.  Stretching hard.

I still think the people behind the stadium are missing out by being so quiet.  They need to front foot this issue by issue.  Bombard with a PR campaign that one day has Petone Rugby syaing nice things.  3 or 4 days later the PWMC, 3 or 4 days later the Jackson St merchants.

Then somethnin showing the stadium plan with a clear image of the remaining (ample) space being used by Children and people walking dogs, and touch players.

Did you see the two page flyer they had in this week's Hutt News? A good start.
Further we shoudl be asking just who are PUEA and PPAG and who they are/represenht?

Having a picnic at the Rec is one of our favourite things to do before Daddy goes to get boozed at the Phoenix.

We met while walking across Petone Rec to a Phoenix game and now we're in love!

There's still loads of room on the Rec for getting wasted...

We should go for something like Dartford FC's stadium - totally undermine the greenies from the start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princes_Park,_Dartford

"Construction work began on 14 November 2005. Designed by Alexander Sedgley architects, the stadium has a capacity of 4,100 (642 seated), and has been described as one of the most ecologically sound ever built.[1] The pitch level is sunk two meters below the external ground level to reduce noise and light pollution. It is estimated to have cost around £7 million. The stadium was opened on 11 November 2006 when Dartford FC, who had been without a home ground in the borough since 1992, beat Horsham YMCA 4-2 in an Isthmian League Division One South league fixture, in front of a capacity 4,097 crowd.[2]

The environmental aspects of the stadium include - The stadium roof has a sedum roof blanket, a living roof that provides a natural air filtration system. solar panelson the roof serve the community changing areas and public toilets hot water storage cylinders. The roof is supported by treated Glulam timber beamsWater recyclingsystem which serves the toilets within the clubhouse. Rain water is collected in the two large ponds at the north end of the stadium grounds. Underfloor heating on both levels of the clubhouse. Low energy lighting. Increased fabric insulation to give the clubhouse better thermal retention and efficiency. Condensing boilers to provide a more energy efficient system. Also excavated earth was reused for landscaping the external courtyard areas around the stadium.[2]"

Take that hippies! What can you complain about now!?

Great concept. This being Petone, who knows what kind of grass could be grown effectively on the roof of the stadium?

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Indeed.  Could even go as far as to grow a lot of cabbage.

The more I think about it though, the more I reckon the whole "green stadium" idea should be explored. Make a big deal out of all the ecofriendly features, integrate it into public recreational space around there, use recycled material where possible, and potentially save money on operating costs down the road by building in energy saving features etc. Obviously our Petone ground would have to be substantially bigger than Princes Park but 7 million pounds for that stadium about 10 years ago still seems cheap - it doesn't seem like the cost of building like that would be that prohibitive.

Nah it'll be all good, we'll just all pitch in for a working bee, problem solved. Plus grass practically grows itself.
