If you remove all clouded nostalgia, the Basin should be replaced by a street. With the money we saved by building crazy bypass structures and the economic costs of blocking traffic, we could build the most amazing stadium with a roof, heated seats and garage project beer taps integrated in every multicolored seat.

Meh, you buy next to a sports ground, then you'd have to reasonably expect lights to go in at some point. So the locals can piss off.

Just saying it would be a heck of a battle to build a stadium that's going to have 8 - 10k people thronging to it every second week when Cricket NZ / the Wellington stadium trust can't even get lights in for a handful of day night cricket matches a year.
And yes NIMBYs have ruined a lot of things, like when an apartment block was built next to the Matterhorn in the late 90s and complained about the noise, so it had to stop being a great live venue (which opened in the 60s) and instead became a restaurant. Also those apartment owners in Thorndon that sued the cathedral because the bells were annoying.
Well, I'd extend that to 1878 - the first year any sport was played under lights.
If anybody has lived there since before 1878, then they couldn't have reasonably expected that there might be lights installed in the sports ground when they purchased the house.

If the basin owners said there wont ever be lights, and they wont turn it into another sports stadium, and then they build a football stadium with lights, you'd have the right to be miffed.
I'd be stoked if I owned an apartment there as you wouldn't have to travel far to games. But if you couldn't sleep all week because of the lights for a day night one dayer, after it was promised it wouldnt happen, I could empathise with that.

Except me. Only things I dont want is a gang hq or something very noisey. However, a stadium is fine by me.

naturally people try and defend their way of life - so yeah sure everyone can be a bit defensive sometimes.
A nimby however would be someone who base level has no real issue with the development that has been proposed, but they just don't want it done near them - those are the people who are annoying.
people who are ignorant and don't get sport etc etc can be ignored, but people who can see the benefit but are like, yeah na not there thanks are the ones who are super frustrating.

the SKY path in Auckland was an interesting one - community groups on both sides of the bridge complained about it, complaints like it will bring more foot traffic etc etc.
Seriously? more foot traffic? talk about glass half full, how about on the positive side less actual traffic!!

It's no worse then the Oval in London which also happens to be very close to London Waterloo train station. It has traffic issues NZ as a whole could only dream about.

A roundabout can have traffic lights, I remember much controversy a few years ago when NZ Roading Engineering magazine gave a company it's prestigious innovation award for designing and building a roundabout with traffic lights. The controversy wasn't because a roundabout cannot have traffic lights, the controversy was because it wasn't particularly innovative.

If they do go through with this, I wonder if they could implement a pitch. Could use a 12,000 seater indoor stadium. Doubt it though on both counts of the pitch and the actual construction
