tato, to be honest we usually hear about players when they show up at training so it could still be true but we do have a lot of foreign players on trial already (and are limited to 5 in total) so they would have to displace two reasonably high profile triallists that arrived recently with pretty good pedigrees and fanfare.

Trial in Wellington and trial with Wellington Phoenix are two very different things.

Seriously? Look at the teams he has played for.

I think Melbourne actually trialed him not long ago? Can't remember. I think an A-League club did, anywayvaleo2010-07-27 00:42:31

I like the look of the guy. Feel he may be abit old, but looks the type of character with confidence and could probably step up to the level. Imagine signing our current two foreign trialists plus him and Pav. Throw North or someone in their and our squad looks amazing.

Hope this is true as it utilises the 5 + 1 (I think thats the rule).
Hope we can see him

Bambang.....sign him just for his name!!!

the guys a goal scoring machine....club football 192 goals in 258 games and internationally 36 goals in 72 games. Trouble is playing/training in Wellington in a 3 degree southerly is not quite as balmy as a 35 degree 100% humidity day in Jakarta.
There have been rumours about this guy before.....signing for Melbourne I think. Doubt that anything will happen, he would have been here earlier to trial if it had substence.... as a rumour I would give it 4/10....just for his name.

He scores a lot, which is what we need. I understand he hasn't played for many good clubs, and that it would be likely that he would score considerably less in the a-league, but I'm sure he could put away a decent number.

its 5 Overseas + 1 AFC, Indonesia is in the AFC, so one of them could be the next Jonny Chen.

No it isn't, its 5 foreign players full stop.  Champions league is 3+1 AFC player.

There is no +1 AFC player in the A-League, just 5 overseas spots no matter where they come from.

Indonesian League- no better than NZFC with added corruption. He's scored one or two goals though...

Really?

"Clubs may also only have a maximum of five players from outside Australia and New Zealand in their squad, and may now have one additional player from the Asian Football Confederation."

That is from Wikipedia I admit, so it may be wrong.

No team at this stage yet has a full roster of 5 overseas plus an AFC player, but it is possible it seems.

An article from March this year, what talks about the chance for Indonesian players joining the A-League.

"especially if Football Federation Australia introduces a ''5+1'' rule for next season's competition, as has been mooted."

On the A-League's wikipedia page under Squad & Salary cap it mentions it being in place. Would prefer to find something better than that to confirm it tho.

Nor WeeMac for Central Coast, nor Smeltzy or Mossy in the final column where they would be listed with those other guys as representing a foreign nation but having no import status due to length of time living in Aus etc.

From that article:

"The player benefits, the national team benefits, and so does the [A-League] club. They'd sell a lot of replica shirts in the markets in Jakarta."

Tis a good point, could be good to pick up an Indonesian player (especially someone like Boombang) to be the 1st in the a-league, get a whole country supporting the 'Nix. Providing he's half way decent of course.ScoobyD2010-07-27 12:56:33

From Radio Sport...

The Wellington Phoenix are closing in on completing their squad list for the forthcoming A-League football season.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert says Argentinean midfielder Roberto Carlos Canerjo and young Australian striker Mirjan Pavlovic are set to sign with the club.

He says they're also waiting on former Socceroo defender Jade North, who they hope to hear from today.

English trialist Chris Shuker won't be signed and is returning home.

However, a new trialist has emerged with Indonesian international striker Bambang Pamungkas to arrive later this week.

The Phoenix must register a squad of 20 players by August 1st.

any striker who has scored 36 goals in 72 internationals has to be worth a look. bambang has a sensational goal scoring record at club and international level (whatever the standard of the Indonesian league)

Very surprising. I would've thought he would be a better option than Toto...

Quite disappointing. He was the only one with a decent pedigree.

The fact that he went to Holland and failed miserably says to me he doesn't feel comfortable outside of Indonesia.

And I swear he trialed for the Victory and wasn't offered a contract - anyone else remember?

I do remember him playing against an A-League Socceroos XI for Indonesia and being less than impressive, though

Have to say, the players we have been linked to and trialed have been less than impressive. North is the only proven player up to A-League standard.

And if North and Pavlovic sign we'll basically be Newcastle II :P

Indonesian League- effectively- I'm an owner and my cousins son is quite good, I guess I could give him game time.

National team is corrupt as hell, and I would be shocked if it didnt filter down to clubs. Commercially- guess he is pretty big in Indo where football is pretty big (although the national team isnt particularly supported). He could be the next Dong Fangzhou, with us the United of the Pacific

I hope Toto is only signed for 1 year with an option for a second year if he plays in enough games. I wasn't overly impressed with his performance on Friday, I thought his first touch and passing wasn't that great, worse than a few of the players we have in the squad already, but is a little bit nippier. I don't want another Diego/Mulligan situation. I would love Felipe to be back and play up top in 4231 midfield.

Gutted for Shuka. Given he came out and played in lame conditions on bugger all sleep i'm suprised he's not been given a chance to hang about. Unfortunately i'm inclined to think it's because he's not liked what he's seen or been offered?

yeh, it seemed odd to be inviting him out given what we had- Bertos, Daniel, Ifill in wide positions...and not that much finishing quality yet in evidence. Maybe this year I'll be Greenacre's breakout year...

Suprised bout Shuker, Wonder whos decision it was to not keep him round? His or ours? We do have quality in wide midfield. Just means we now have to sign one more playre who will virtually get just a few days to impress. Could be North/ Bambang/ Fever Scholars.

If Bambang looks decent, sign him up. Because we can still get another foreigner with the 5+1 and he wont be too expensive to pay.

The one thing i do wonder bout, is we should be looking at a quick striker. Someone with pace to kill would be a great addition

I suggested Bambang in the speculation thread two years ago and was told to be serious...

The Nix would not sell any shirts in Indonesia (or maybe one to his mum). The locals there buy knock offs.

Should approach the Indonesians about a pre-season match in Jakarta next year though (if he sign him), would not be surprised if they stumped up some cash for a match.

Hopefully would also make a friend at AFC house.

Like that Brisbane young gun Barbarouses?

Not keen for Bambang even though his name is awesome. Will struggle in this league, no doubt.valeo2010-07-27 16:45:52

Why ?

Even if he only scores at 25% of his previous rate he'll be in the leagues top 5 scorers.  Plenty of smaller stature players survive fine and it's a summer league so he won't have to slop around winter Wellington parks.

I reckon he might be a surprise package if the fit is right.
