Both too similar in style and both really offer zero defensive attributes. That would be a disaster.

so we need to keep Lia and Smith......

And I might also add, Hernandez would put Sanchez to shame in terms of performance. How is putting another good player around him all of a sudden going to make him perform? He hasn't this year...

Lia we have to keep because he is contracted for another year. Smith is the one you replace with the box to box midfielder. Smith is more really an AM/forward but is used out of position to plug a gap.

Do we assume Lia couldn't find another club anywhere?  Could he do a job for another team if we et him leave and find another club?  Thai clubs seem to sign up any A-League dregs maybe that is an option

Yeah, the only justification for keeping Sanchez now would be as cover for Hernandez and that's a luxury we can't afford.

I've been a big cheerleader for Sanchez but it seems he's only got 5 good games a year in him and that's not enough.

yeah Hernandez's signing is the end for Sanchez art the nix, which is kinda sad as I've always thought he hasn't had the best shot but really hasn't made the most of the limited chances either. Smith to be replaced (please) by a decent central midfirelder.

Yep I think that with signing of King carlos its the end of the road for Sanchez and Smith. Feel a bit sorry for these guys as they both came to a team that didnt really play to any of the strengths that they have  and invariably they ended up having to play in positions that didnt suit their game

Do we have any highlights of Carlos in India (e.g. most recent season)?

Do we have a nice nickname we can use for him? Don't think fatty would do anymore..

Man, all the trolls under this article on stuff piss me off. And people say these forums are angsty!

it goes to show two things Barry

1: your average NZ sporting fan is very much not clued up on football

2: based on above, you could feed them anything and they would believe it. I lolled at 'Sanchez would one of the best around' comment and 'Carlos is always injured' (134 games? Hardly)

Sadly you are correct. I remember when the Beckham media circus was in town the sheer number of people referring to him as "the best player in the world" or similar - even people who follow a bit of football and should know better.
We should remove that bullsh*t "social studies" subject from high school education and replace it with an "understanding football" course :P

perhaps attitude too?

I love the guy, but from someone who has previously been god-like and rightly confident in his ability to beat players and smash goals from anywhere on the park you get the feeling he has been frustrated this season and perhaps with some of his tweets not a happy camper.

Pissed off with that offside against Adelaide- that was a vintage moment. And looked ok against Glory at Eden Park. The guy is a genius, but we need a plan B. We've been screwed this season cos we didn't have one. except Manny as our creative midfielder.

Scores at 1.20 and 1.45 in Prayag's 10-1 win

Scores a curling free kick

EDIT: Thought I'd chuck this in too, I don't know what's better, Carlos' goal or the commentator's reaction when he realised the ball was in the net.

As good as Manny can be, I would hardly call him a creative midfield player.

When Marco went to Melbourne, one of his stated reasons was that he wanted to play central attacking midfielder, and there he could learn from the best - Carlos Hernandez ...

... so Marco, want to come back to us?

If he's fit, he'll add a lot to the midfield. Age still on his side at 30 going on 31.

Checking out his international appearances for Costa Rica, more impressive than I realised  -35 apps, 7 goals

The stats for him on Wikipedia are very incomplete - rather check out his page on FIFA.com here:

http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/statisticsandrecords/players/player=182587/index.html

including: 2001 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Argentina (all four games incl. vs. Netherlands, Ethiopia, Ecuador and Czechs in the round of 16)

2004 Athens Olympic Games (all four games vs. Morocco, Iraq, Portugal and Argentina in the quarter-final)

2006 FIFA World Cup, Germany (2 apps in finals vs. Poland & Ecuador))

World Cup qualifying:  9 apps in 2006 qualifying incl. against Mexico, USA, Trinidad, Canada, Honduras, Panama, Guatamala
(Costa Rica qualified directly as third place side in CONCACAF behind USA, & Mexico);
4 apps in 2010 qualifying vs. Mexico, USA, Honduras, El Salvador (called-up for the final round of qualifying & Costa Rica made it to play-off vs. Uruguay as fourth team  in CONCACAF )

International goals include in two World Cup qualifiers against the USA 2006, and  a winner against France in a friendly  in 2010.
His most recent appearances for Costa Rica were in three friendlies in 2011.

Apparently the Aussie government are so down on people from places like Costa Rica that they wouldn't renew Carlos' visa once Melbourne Victory opted not to renew his contract last year (he was in a "no current job, no right to stay" kind of situation on his visa) so he couldn't even stay to negotiate a deal with other interested A-League clubs...Also the Victory pissed him around in contract negotiations. Does anyone else find it a bit weird that we are yet to hear a single word from Carlos Hernandez about this?

There wasn't a quote from him in the original press release and I certainly can't remember seeing anything from him in any of the reports since then (happy to be corrected if I'm wrong). Is he on Twitter?

Just seems weird.

There's a tiny little dark recess in the back of my mind that's thinking "I hope there isn't anything up with this". Wouldn't it just be classic Phoenix if there was a clause in his contract letting him go if Ricki wasn't in charge or some other bizarre condition. Before you scoff - one word - Totori.

I don't like to confirm such things until I see the player in the shirt, holding a scarf over his head, and at the stadium. So, yes, have a niggling doubt...

You are right it is very weird. One of our highest profile signings of all time and we have not heard a peep when we should be pushing the positive. I hope we can just put it down to having some very poor leadership at the moment and no marketing nous. Now we have a marketing manager perhaps this may change.

Totori's contract had some stupid clause in it that automatically triggered a year's extension.

How much longer left to go in the I-League? Maybe he is professional enough to not comment on next season, whilst he is still involved with his current team?

I don't think there's anything sinister in it - but I am surprised we didn't manage to get a single quote from him out there somewhere just to capitalise on the signing.

yeah does't it wrap up in June/july? I'm sure he'll make comment when he's good and ready I trust Ricki and the welnix guys enough to believe them when they announce a signing. If it falls through then I'll be annoyed but I think the nk has dired and he's on his way.
