Imagine unveiling this guy as our new coach? We desperately need a good news story and this would just invite our critics to pile on.

Fully agree with you on that.Real problem is if it was him they were about to announce then that could have a serious affect on us. As the process will probably have to start all over again.

Ive been biting my tongue since this rumour started doing the rounds for this reason. De Marigny is as big a thug as Muscat. I actually recall him getting into a training ground punch on with someone during his playing days at Marconi.

If De Marigny is the phoenix coach next season, i will not follow the club next season. To support that kind of behaviour by hiring him as coach i would find completely unacceptable. If he was appointed, he needs to be fired now.

Perhaps we need to have someone outspoken as we always cop the rough of  50/50 Ref decisions ( or even 60/40s) - or  maybe the plan is to have Greenie take the team while he watches from the stands... on the other hand if he abuses his own players then  - we’ll we already tried that.

Can you imagine the headlines if we signed him? 'Desperate Nix Hire Aussie Slapper!' ;)

Seriously, a public relations disaster, and the equivalent of a dozen 'own goals' before the new season even started.

The Stuff story - the click through link says: A-League Coach Attacks Player - and we get a mention.

'Victory reigned in a hugely antagonistic semi-final that ended with the dismissal of Victory's goalkeeper coach Dean Anastasiadis and assistant coach Jean-Paul de Marigny - who is considered a frontrunner for the vacant Wellington Phoenix head coach role.'

‘Disgusting’ attack from Melbourne victory tarnishes A-League epic semi-final
Football commentators have lashed out at a “disgusting” attack from an Aussie coach that smeared an A-League epic.

I really hope we don't pick up this guy for next season. Not sure we can afford another 'loose cannon' at the helm.

I'm still hoping its Ramon and they got dispensation... O League still underway and to my knowledge he hasn't made any comments about not being in the running, which I think he has done previously??

This other guy is not what we need... I'm beginning to miss Ricki... are things really this bad!

With a bit of luck he might get an FFA ban from coaching!

The thought had crossed my mind. I'd expect a few weeks out of the game, at least. Which would mean, if the Nix did hire him, that he'd spend the first few matches next season watching from the stands.
I hope Nix management are already deep in an emergency Sunday meeting to find a way out of this deal if he is, indeed, their 'chosen one'.

I know I've been in the Sherman camp for a while, but when I see stories like this, I'm more convinced than ever that he'd be a very wise choice for the head coach role.

No chance really, If Ramon had his A Licence than there could be an outside chance, but he doesn't - the other factor is that the Nix would need a good relationship with the FFA to be able to get a dispensation and even before this week there wasn't a good relationship there

I have faith in the mods sources as the thread is not named after him

If it is him and he has signed a contract, lord, heaven help us

we then have a number of weeks as we try to negotiate our way out of this mess and god knows how long to hire another coach

In those circumstances we should be able to get despensation to get Ramon, but we are not flavour of the month with the FFA so asking for a favour is badly timed

I doubt the mods have any sources, they're just changing the thread title to reflect the latest rumor.

After some of the stories about Gombau at WSW I don't know if he's going to be any better.

FFA will probably let him off completely on the theory that the quicker they get this maniac to the Nix the quicker they'll drive the club to the wall.

You might just possibly make a case that this was a one-off meltdown brought on by the emotion of the night until you remember that it is now his third straight red card in less than 18 months, all really ugly incidents that put him, his club and the game in a very bad light.

Worst case: What if it's a done deal, this maniace has already got the head coach job, the contract is signed and the Nix are just waiting for the finals to be over before announcing it? Would an incident like this be enough for the club to tear up the contract? Anyone on here with HR or legal knowledge care to give us their thoughts?

Permalink Permalink

Lets really really hope he has not been signed up and waiting to be announced.

Could it be any of the assistant coaches for city or jets or sydney? Any of them a possibility if we are waiting for the finals to finish ?

Permalink Permalink

if the contract is not signed then they clearly cannot now go ahead. If it is signed then they would need to invoke the likely ‘bringing the club into disrepute’ clause.

If there is no such clause then someone has screwed up and it will be expensive.

Whichever way you look at it this guy cannot take over at the Phoenix.

well for starters if the nIx have learnt anything about their piss poor communication in recent months, if if it is not him, then they should come out now and subtely indicate by process of elimination that it's someone else

Even better naming the new coach would be nice

The only way this makes sense is if you are trying to have him fired from the Victory. If they really tried to get rid of him, which they clearly don't (even Muscat said "I hope JP will be excused, heat of the moment", etc), then they may consider it a valid reason to fine him.

As for the Phoenix, I simply hope the contract has not been signed.  Even if there is such "disrepute" clause in the  - hypothetical - Welnix contract, then it simply could not be invoked in this case, since there was no official announcement, and press speculation does not count. What would be the trigger for this clause to be invoked? That his name appeared next to Nix name in the same sentence in the media? Pretty embarrassing for us, I know, but not enough.

Embarrasing for us sure, I only wish it would be equally embarrassing for the media moguls who ran with the story when it turns out to be false.

At best he is likely to be fined by FFA for bringing the game into disrepute, but no more than that.   I agree with everyone that he would clearly be a hot potato for us, as the media would portray him as a liability and blame us for taking him on.  He is simply not the best choice at all now, for many reasons.
If it is not Gombau, Poppa, Van Egmond  or Farina, I would actually rather consider Paul Okon, since everyone in Oz wishes him well (in general), and he already knows how to coach cellar dwellers (motto: "lower your expectations").  Gary van Egmond was not a bad coach but then I do not know how Welnix arrives at the decisions that they make.

Its quite funny actually.... owners bang on about how useless everyone is ...

Then appoint my guess number 30+ on an A-league coaching list.

With metric's in mind can you see this guy attracting quality players,  lifting crowds etc.... or is he a budget choice ... i.e cheapest available holding necessary licenses ...

A coach assaulting a player at any level of the game is simply UNACCEPTABLE.

I don’t care if it’s Pep in the EPL or U12s grassroots; the state of the game and any players reputation is irrelevant to the matter.

Firstly, he's just a rumor and we don't know how true that is, and secondly we just had an experienced and expensive coach and it was a disaster. We need someone who can hit the ground running and has a league experience.
