You may very well be right - I simply assumed that he was qualified to be an assistant (or co-head coach) with Buckingham a year ago. If he wasn't, how was that allowed by FFA? Was that to do with a temporary nature of the assignment after Ernie quit?

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Are you sure? The document I posted some pages ago said it was starting in 2015/16 season. Most likely they got a short term excemption.

Oh well it must be true then.  He's only sniffing around every other job in Australia.  Also citing a source less reliable than Phoenix Supporters Facebook groups.

So if I understand this right, every candidate we have been linked with is either:

1: Not qualified (Greenacre, Ramon)

2: Unaffordable (Popa)

3: Shark coach (Miller, Okon)

4: Said no (Vidmar)

5: Not coached in a long time (Sherman)

6: Holding out for something better at Sydney (Rudan)

So who is actually left?

Looking down that list I still think Sherman is the pick of the bunch. Okay, he hasn't coached a team for while, but when he has coached in the past he's been successful, and it's not like he's been out of the game and been off fishing for the last decade. He's highly qualified, and for my money he'd be the ideal man to take over the reins, help strengthen the club at all levels (Wee Nix, Academy, etc) and the club could team him up with a compatible younger assistant (Kiwi) coach who Sherman could mentor with a view to taking over the job somewhere down the track. Oh, did I also mention I think he'd be a very safe pair of hands, something the club desperately needs after this horrible season and with the clubs survival at stake?

Miller's going to be busy next year, apparently he's signed for the Phoenix, CCM, and Perth.

He's got a good agent.

I honestly don't think Miller is a shark coach, that Newcastle team was one of the worst ever and he managed to steer them in the right direction before getting the axe for reasons that weren't results

I myself do not have a problem with Sherman in so far of 99% of what you have said. The only issue I have is that he has not coached in a while. The rest, I think he would do well with.

I agree with the above and think that Sherman is the best of the lot (given the circumstances!).  I also wish to raise exactly the same point I did when the AWs were about to appoint a new coach: the coach is only as good as the players he's got.

Sure, some lateral thinking, on-the-field experience, good education etc will help that you've got to have all of those, but you get Guardiola to coach my and my mates in Cap 5, and I can guarantee you he won't do that well.

So, in short, there's no point getting an awesome coach if we have a crap squad and vice-versa - and given our recent trend, this is something to be addressed by the club.

Market something like this?

3/1 Sherman

7/1 BuxFizz

20/1 Miller

25/1 Okon

40/1 Mike Mulvey

50/1 Rudan

100/1 Popa

1,000/1 Ricki

Yep; he's going to miss out at Sydney as they'll go Euro/BigName for sure. Reckon he'll be an option for CCM, except they've stated "experienced" in the last couple of days.

PS. Think Rudan will miss out on Sydney for same reason; so we're maybe a long shot but Gosford would probably be more attractive than Wellington right now.

I think anyone with youth development and talent identification is going to be high up the list.

If international windows go then the focus is going to revert to NZ players and that will be finding them, developing them and evaluating the ones overseas to become A-League players (and back to the concept of making money out of it).

Anyone who can paint a picture on that is going to get strong support in an interview.

Disagree. That would be a recruitment process ignorant of metric demands.

Mark Rudan's the guy for this gig. He won't get Sydney. But whatever - the delay is giving me nightmares.

Rudan is unproved at HAL level so may or may not work out with the Nix. I'm still in the Rob Sherman camp, and even if he didn't get the head coach job, I'd love to see him hired in some capacity - maybe a newly created Director of Football role, We need someone of Sherman's caliber working fulltime with the Nix in some coaching/development capacity.
But overall, I'm with most of the people on this forum - will someone please just make a call and pick a new head coach in the next few days who can start working on next season's squad - who to keep, who to let go, and who to recruit - and who has a well thought out plan to pick us up off the canvas.

The FOX pundits of the Bozza and Slater kind would find it much harder to diss us if our coach's name is Aloisi.

We would also have the best new derby when playing Brisbane. (The Sibling Rivalry). All metrics ticked in one go.

Dear Mr Dome,

If you are reading this, which you should be because many of your passionate fans have input here, please appoint a Coach for the Wellington Phoenix SOON (like tomorrow) as otherwise the best players in the Club will be "cherry picked" elsewhere, and the Coach will get the pick of also-rans in the Club - and from other clubs or elsewhere.  There are only a few games left to sort things out -we need certainty now, not one week before the start of the next season.
