I see Adidas have finally pulled their finger out and moved their Phoenix gear from a wee corner at the back of the store (which you couldnt see from the street) to the entrance of the shop, about bloody time.

Still no window display though.

Would require money spent ion marketing (which hasn't seemed to be the case prior to this weekends game).

Used to count the number of Nix posters when I used to do the South Wellington to Lower Hutt commute in the early seasons. Always saw posters (sometimes both sides north and south) on Karo St/Victoria St intersection before the tunnel, always at least one on the Newtown/Riddiford St/ Hospital stops, and spread through the city.

It was great to go to a Sunday afternoon Nix game, walking up Featherston St, through the Railway Station and seeing several Adshel Nix posters for the game at the various shelters on the way.
Two and a half hours later, on the same route back, with the crowds all streaming past, all the posters had been changed with the new Nix posters for the next home match, sometimes 2+ weeks away...A beautiful, well oiled piece of precision marketing, right there!!...and typifying to me the marketing attitude and excellence called for once again, leading into season 12-13.

I was always impressed by that as well, that the bus shelter just down from the BB would always have been changed to the next home game by the time you had left after a post match pint

You are a good example of how the radio and dom post advertising is working. Even the social media.

Firstly, the level of engagement with fans, both fever fans and outsiders, is at the highest level its been in farkin ages. Regardless of the criticisms people have about some of the ideas, this imo can only be a good thing. It also seems very genuine from Gareth, as in he's not just trying to placate us, he genuinely would like our contributions and ideas. I think it's awesome.

The blackout argument has been done to death, but I think we'll find it's a huge success. I think the UNICEF thing is at worst harmless and at best fantastic. Advertising for this game is the highest I've seen it in about 2 years (full page in the dom this morning, ten points Welnix). Add in the community football initiative and this could be our most promoted game ever, or at least in the last few years.

As for those who say running so many promotions at once is stupid, well some of you seem bloody impossible to please.

With wins coming on the park as well at the moment, I think the club is in a really healthy place, and with an owner who is clearly passionate and engaged, I think its only a matter of time before the crowds come back.

Here's something I received from a Wellington Based Phoenix fan who I shall not name. I don't even have express permission to post it (but have indicated that I shall be doing so without any names). It has good points IMO.

How is it that they could park a trailer with big billboard in Cathedral square advertising the Nix v Reds game in CHCH.
Yet in Wellington you see sweet F all posters/billboards advertising the next home game.

Best you get is a .pdf poster you can download and put up around the place yourself.

We are third, and might finish the weekend second on the table.

The club have the following marketing initiatives in train:

One of Black out the Heart
Gate share with Wellington Football Clubs
Gareth's Guest
They are doing a presentation 10 mins before kick off for Daniel's 100 games with the club
$10 parking at the stadium this weekend.

And it all seems to be working...  It seems like we are about to seee the biggest crowd of the season at the ROF.

Earlier in the season they've done free kids tickets with an adult ticket, $5 kids tickets, discounted adult tickets, etc., etc.,

And STILL people bitch...

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I wouldn't be so quick to attribute this to the Nix. I'm almost certain this would be a Westpac initiative. Just saying (especially because there are calls for cheaper game day parking which I think may be out of the DIRECT control of the Club.

I checked with two casual supporters this morning and asked when the next Nix game was - neither knew. They did assume there was one this weekend, but it could have been away for all they knew.
The point - you will only know when the games are on if you go looking. Nor sure how you make a bunch of casuals go looking, but for me the key is to let them all know and get them along whenever possible. If I didn't then they probably would miss Sunday's game.

One thing that has stopped is previews on the tv news. Once they realise we are 3rd and possibly 2nd then they may get involved - hopefully.

There has been a LOT of discussion here about marketing, newspaper, radio, ADSHEL, etc. etc.

Sure it "works", but is it cost-effective for a Club which is struggling to pull 10K at the moment?

With due respect, I think a lot of people who say the crowd numbers are a lot to do with lack of paid advertising/marketing probably don't realise that HEAPS of people see an ignore these ads.

As Royal points out, I think people need to be looking for it before they really notice it. Sure, they might see the Black Out page in the Doom Post, but if they have no ENGAGEMENT with the Club/team/players, then it will be soon brushed off.

Someone commented about walking to a Nix game and seeing game posters along the way, then walking home and seeing they had been changed to posters for the NEXT home game. Wonderful I agree, but ultimately they might not be as effective as we, the fans, may believe them to be.

I'm not saying don't do them. I like them and think they are important. But I'm just saying I don't think we should disproportionately blame the advertising for games for the crowds.

I have personal experience. In Dunedin, while advertising was modest, it WAS present in the form of radio ads, billboards, and print advertising in the local newspaper.

I walked the streets for hours on the day before the game, and on game day. And guess what? A HUGE number of people told me they didn't even know the game was on. Some of them were/would have been interested in the game. Others told me "oh I thought the game was on NEXT week!".

Sure, they may have been lying to me, but what would the motiviation have been to do that?

The BEST advertising is WORD OF MOUTH. I know there are many Social Media doubters here but the recommendation of a trusted friend/person is the strongest endorsement that any product can receive.

We, Yellow Fever, the fans, are the biggest asset that Gareth and the Phoenix have. We are worth more than newspaper advertisements, billboards, radio ads, and (you may not believe me on this one) scantily-clad women giving out game flyers.

Some posts in this thread have suggested that the Wellington Phoenix needs to take a long hard look in the mirror before they threaten their fan base. Fair enough, but similarly I implore every one of you to also look in the mirror and ask not what Gareth can do for you, but what you can do for Gareth and the Club that you and every one of us hold so dearly to our hearts.

I just rode a life in HP Tower. A guy got in my lift and commented on my Eyechart T shirt.

He said "Great shirt. The club is very clever with their shirts."

I didn't explain that it was the Yellow Fever, not the club who do the t shirts...

Instead I said: "Are you going to the game? It should be a big crowd this weekend."

He said: "Yeah I am thinking about it. They've done a great job promoting this game."

And then he got out at the 12th floor.

(He didn't drive a taxi.)

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Agree. There are just far too many examples to ignore. Perhaps try and get people signed up for an e-mail notification so people who have been before, or anyone who wants to sign up, will at least know when each game is on. That is cheap.

Maybe the billboards, radio adverts, newspaper adverts, adshells, fliers, pamphlets etc. need a change of focus?

If the general populace don't know when the games are, perhaps the ads need to be blunt and too the point:

Phoenix: This Sunday. 4.30pm. Be there.

(Change the day and time accordingly - of course.)

If people were bombarded by that message, maybe people would start talking about the game, the Phoenix AND when the game is?

Exactly. Or even if they didn't start talking about it they would at least know when it is on.

I think the unnamed season pass holder did make some very valid points about the fickle nature of our crowds being to do with lack of engagement. This isn't necessarily due to the Club's errors but also a function of time. A young club hasn't really had the chance to get under the skin of enough people to make them want to care.

It's going to be a long journey forward. The advertising and word of mouth is good but ultimately no matter how good your billboards are, if people don't CARE then they won't pay attention. How we make them care is the crux.

Another idea. Have the ability to associate your season pass with a  club in the wellington region. Clubs with most season passes to get coaching clinics from some of the players. Get clubs to sell season tickets.

Another VERY good idea.

Favours the bigger clubs enormously if you do it purely on how many season tickets a club sells. If you do that, the smaller clubs might not even bother trying because they know before the start line that they are very unlikely to outsell the bigger clubs? But then maybe a smaller club gets really enthused and sells WAY more than anyone expects... which is a real win.

Perhaps do it on season tickets sold divided by number of members?

To sing, shout,
While the crowds are down,

Engaging clubs to link them in with the sale of season memberships? THE CLUB DID THAT A COUPLE OF SEASONS AGO. Not only did the club undertake the initiative, it arranged for a promotion whereby clubs would get dollar-for-dollar returns from a sports equipment supplier for gear. At no cost to the clubs. Free gear for spruiking season memberships.

Uptake of this initiative? Poor. Promotion of this by clubs? Poor. Sad, really.

Sounds like it. Nevertheles, what I'm saying is that the club has already had and undertaken the idea. Unfortunately it didn't work. That's not to say it's not worth another try, but don't write off the club's earlier efforts.
