Under used this year?

Would he be able to getting a starting position in other teams?

Nah,hes a bench player, definetly not good enough to start. Caceres then came in,did better in a couple of games and took his impact spot on the bench. Just shows how far we've come.

Allegedly

I'm still a fan of Daniel. Has done well whenever he has come on and I still rate him as a player over Caceres.

daniel.. one of the best players in the league!

I don't think Daniel has done anything wrong tbh. He got injured, and couldn't make it back into the starting team due to the others in front of him.

Before getting injured, he was playing rather well (eg holding his starting spot).

All our mid-fielders had bad patches (notably Leo being benched for a refresher), and Diego has hardly had a look in.

I was quite sad when I saw his reaction when we won the shoot out it was a little subdued. You could tell how bad he wanted to be out there. On his day I'd prefer him over Caeceres.

i moved to nz at the start of season 2 and have watched every home game since. i didnt really rate daniel in season 2 although i had heard he was great for us in season 1. this season he has been a legend, i actually started agreeing with the 'fan favourite' tag when i watched him revving the crowd up during our six nil stomping of GCU.

i agree chocnut, he looked gutted.

not under used, I think he's struggling to get on the pitch due to ifill securing the right midfielder spot at the moment, when ifill was playing up front we needed the cover, with bertos, caceras and daniel who do you pick. unfortunately for daniel both bertos and caceras are playing too well..

Queenslander 3x a year.

Caceres will leave at the end of this season so i'm sure Daniel will have opportunities.

imo Caceres has a higher high but a lower low. Daniel is a bit more consistent these days.

Too inconsistent.

Great player on his day, but sometimes a luxury we cannot afford.

I think it is more this. I think he's a better player than Caceres in some ways- certainly a better passer of the ball. He seemed to work hard early on on criticisms of his game and was defending well, and had been tracking back.

he's not as quick as Caceres, but he reads the game much better, and brings other players into the game well- if they are making runs.

plus he's a fever zone favourite and always plays his heart out.

He looked like class when he came on for that small bit against CC? was it , and I was hoping he'd get some time in the Perth game, but we made it through without him.

Well put. Caceres for me is a football mercenary who will put in a decent effort only when he feels like it. I think some people underestimate the quality and amount of work Daniel does because a lot of it isn't of the flashy 'Brazilian' kind.

In our entire squad no one can deliver a ball into the penalty area as well as Daniel. Unfortunately for him Ricki has hit upon a combination of players that is doing the job so he has to miss out. But I still love the guy!

Not always. The issue with each of Daniel, Bertos & Caceres is that the the arrows in the above randomly point every which way and you're never quite sure which way.

Makes it so much more fun to watch!

I know, I know, its serious!

I feel sorry for the guy.

He has been such a great club player. Always wears his heart on his sleeve and will follow whatever Ricki says. Unfortunately for him that's nearly always been bench time or being subbed off when it's clear there are others (ah-hem Leo?) that haven't been contributing nearly as much as he has. Especially lately. Last game was a good example but just knew it would happen.

He looked pissed and walked off slowly. But I watched him as he went to the bench and he was still honourable and shook Ricki's hand without any show of annoyance. He obviously has total faith in his coach. I just wish Ricki would have some more in him.

That would include re-signing him please!

Good post. I think he does strike me as the ultimate team man and takes his medicine in his stride. I wouldn't classify him as heart-on-sleeve type character but more loves the club. All teams need guys that get on with the job and do as asked. I think either way, when you are paid to be a pro footballer, whether you play or not, you are still a pro footballer getting paid and there are are lot worse things he could be doing (m-f 9-5) in a lot worse climates (winter football in Scotland). I struggle to see how you couldn't have a sunny disposition when you get paid to play sport.

Two problems with Daniel.....

In a team where we have no one with pace, he is probably close to the slowest in our bunch and he is weak defensively. That said, Given he qualifies for a local next season, I would probably be keen top resign hmi on a year by year basis, although it is pretty clear he will be a "bit part player"

This crops up over and over, he's been a NZ citizen for years now, it's just that soon he qualifies for the All Whites by way of 5 years residency

He's already a local player. Has been for a year or so. Just qualifies for the AWs next month (or is it this month now?)

Agreed he's not the quickest nor the strongest defensively, although think he has improved markedly in that aspect since he first joined the club.

BUT he creates a hell of a lot more than most, and in my eyes has improved by quite a bit over his early years of "step-over, step-over" tricks. Some of his passing lately has been sublime, especially in combo with Sanchez. Plus he can cross a ball that doesn't always come down with snow on it.

We sat in front of the screen on Sunday and we couldn't come up with the fastest player on the team (we were looking at Bertos at the time and came to the conclusion of age) Daniel may not be the fastest but he is qualified as a local (We have our 5 imports and he is not one of them) and he is playing more than a bit part role at the moment. Mind you, I don't think we expected Pantellis to be out.

Is Pantellis around for next year since we have forgotten about that guy?

Pantelis is contracted for next season. Would love Pantelis and Daniel on the wings but won't happen unless Leo injures himself I would say.

"Daniel is also off contract at the end of the season and, after a long stint as a specialist benchwarmer, the 32-year-old seems to have a new lease of life playing alongside Sanchez.

The left-footed midfielder is one of five survivors from the inaugural Phoenix season in 2007-08, along with Mark Paston, Tony Lochhead, Tim Brown and Vince Lia, and, already a New Zealand passport holder, becomes eligible to play for the All Whites next month.

That is a massive boost to his chances of the club re-signing him for next season because he won't chew up an import slot."

I suppose I should know better than getting my information from the Doom Post!!!

That article is correct.. He's had a NZ passport (making him a local for A-League purposes) for a while but as others have said had to wait 5 years before qualifying for the AWs.

I think Daniel does his best when it comes to every role, and that includes his defensive duties.
He may not make the greatest challenges or tackles, but at least he is getting back and trying to track his man.

Daniel is tops for me....right from day one he was the ultimate club man....I've seen him off duty when he has posed for photo's with fans and signed endless autographs and all with a smile on his face. He is also in really in good form at the moment, yet he keeps getting hooked off when are playing worse get to stay on the field. He certainly plays better when he has another ball player like Sanchez playing.....a bit like year one and Felipe
Sign him up for another year for sure.

He must be close to getting picked for the AW's especially for this years WC qualifiers in oceania....he brings a certain set of skills that not many others have currently.

I reckon he'd be good for the All Whites, mainly because i can imagine him going CRAZY if he scores!

Another attacking ball playing midfielder is fine with me.

It may well be correct in that when he was last signed he took up an import slot, and on becoming a citizen, the slot became vacant. And now he is a Kiwi, so he doesnt have to be as "good" as an import to be resigned

Think thats right

I hope he gets another contract with the phoenix. He always seems happy to represent the club, puts on a positive front with the media and from what I've seen on my visits to welly is a good ambassador of the brand to the public young and old.

He may not be a league MVP or a 90 minute a week player for the club, but his PR work and attitude is surely invaluable, esp if it rubs off on the younger kids we want to become full time pros.

On that basis, most of Yellow Fever would be good for the AWs.

I have grown to admire Daniel, from the early days when he would 'dive' at every opportunity, to now when he is one of the best (IMO) players we've got. Sure he may not be as fit or quick as others, but he makes up for that in commitmen and attitude. Also, he certainly knows how to get the yellow fever (and others) behind him and the team. He is one of the few players in the team that you'd have next to you in the trenches.

I think he needs a little more game time and must (surely) deserve to line up for the AW's this year sometime.

He still has much to offer. And I hope we re-sign him for another year or two.

Agree, he looked very disapointed when subbed off against Perth and who could blame him? He was playing bettter than most of his team mates. He's a great club guy and is playing well this year...give him a break !

I need more Daniel.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

I know I am biased but I really believe it should have been Leo that got taken off against Perth. At least Daniel pulled the trigger, all be it, hitting the crossbar.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Except the person whom matters the most - Ricki. As for Daniel playing for the All Whites. I'd like to see that but then again Ricki's decision and judging on how Daniel is getting selected for the Nix, I can see that been doubtful to be honest. Shame as Daniel has a lot to offer, not just as a player but as an influence on younger All Whites. Experience, professionalism and abilities to pass on.
