I remember some good and some reckless tackles, plenty of heart but not much finesse, trying to make an impression, but not seeing the bigger picture of the game. Anyway, good luck Salas!
Was loaned to us because he was a class player who might reasonably attract a transfer fee for his parent club, but playing for us was potentially a better shop window for him than playing there. Also because Tim Payne had hammy issues and Chiefy thought he might help us get over the line to win the premiership. It also represented a salary increase for the player himself at the time. But there was no genuine expectation that he would stay with us long term because we were never going to pay the transfer fee the loan was ultimately trying to make happen.
I am surprised he is still getting loaned out, must have been on a very long contract at the time or have extended since. Not interested enough to google to find out what that deal is. But he will be quality for Brisbane, no doubt.
These are from the Heralds article. I tried googling, but I'm not sure what the difference is between what the lawyers and the crown are asking for, but are they both relatively light sentences? Community service type?
(Lewis's Lawyer) asked the magistrate to consider a community release order of two years, and that a conviction not be entered on Lewis’ record.
The Crown was seeking a community correction order for both Lewis and Baccus, and asked the magistrate to consider “what message it would send to the football community” if convictions for the offending were not entered.
he's not likely to be playing football anywhere, even after whatever ban he gets. appealing for a lighter sentence so he can travel is a ridiculous request, why should he get to travel after committing this crime?
If you get done for a small drug offence youll likely get barred from many countries, I'm not getting a lesser sentence because I might want to travel. why should this guy?
Socceroos: Daniel Arzani, Max Balard, Jordan Bos, Martin Boyle, Cameron Burgess, Alessandro Circati, Milos Degenek, Cameron Devlin, Mitch Duke, Nicholas D’Agostino, Joe Gauci, Jason Geria, Ajdin Hrustic, Nestory Irankunda, Paul Izzo, Fran Karacic, Hayden Matthews, Connor Metcalfe, Lewis Miller, Aiden O’Neill, Alex Robertson. Average squad. The current AW's would beat them easily.
(seriously though, good to see Devlin getting a call up).

Surely he's taking the piss. The Socceroos just keep beating the AWs whilst barely raising a sweat, and NZ hardly threatening to score.
Admittedly that wasn't true in Canberra, where we were very unlucky to lose amd dominant in the first half. However Poppa made some smart changes, and it was normal service in Auckland.
They are simply just better than us. That's the brutal truth of it. This AWs generation is will peak closer to the 2030 WC than 2026.
Ryan, Arzani and Duke are strong additions. Alex Robertson a good pickup for them as well. Looks like Poppa has rotated the young ex ALM trio of Botic (Austria Vienna), Milanovic (Aberdeen) and Segecic (Portsmouth) out, to focus on their club stuff.
I am sure Port Vale Superstar Ben Waine will carry the all whites into a famous victory! coochiee

Very nicely trolled. I got a bit triggered, scrolled and lolled. Sold me down the river and made me laugh. 🫡 Salute

Robertson feels out of nowhere. Couldn't get a sniff when he was playing fairly well in the championship in admittedly an awful side, but then gets a proper call up when he's not played all season in league one (injured for most of that, but has been available for selection for a couple weeks).
I think there have been ongoing questions to whether Roberston was commited to the Socceroos or not. From the very short clips I've seen of him, he looks a very skilled midfielder.
Cardiff City’s Robertson has previously played two friendlies for Australia; however, there has been ongoing speculation over his international future due to him also being eligible to represent Peru, Scotland and England.
Robertson was born in Dundee, Scotland to a Peruvian mother and Australian father, Mark, who played football professionally. He moved to his father's native Australia at the age of four, where he lived in the Sydney suburb of Maroubra between the ages of five and twelve.
The difference is in having a record. Not great if you ever want to travel abroad as a tourist, let alone to play football anywhere.
Even a minor sentence can cause a lot of trouble when travelling. Former All White Ceri Evans has been burdened with this problem since he was a varsity student in the 1980's. He has a careless driving conviction after some youthful student stupidity in Ashburton in 1984 (no car accident or harm to another motorist it seems) His appeal to have his conviction overturned was denied in December last year: https://www.lawsociety.org.nz/assets/Professional-practice-docs/Case-notes/December-2024/Evans-v-R-2024-NZCA-647.pdf?vid=4 "[9] The extensive travel Dr Evans undertakes requires him to declare his conviction as a prerequisite to entering Australia and the United States. This is because the Criminal Records (Clean State) Act 2004 (the Clean Slate Act), which applies to Dr Evans’ conviction does not apply when a person with a conviction in New Zealand seeks to enter another country and is required to disclose their convictions...Dr Evans estimates he has declared his conviction approximately 100 times when entering Australia. This causes him embarrassment and inconvenience. In June 2023 when Dr Evans was entering Australia, a border control officer told Dr Evans to “address” his historic conviction, because the Australian Border Force was “wasting time” on a matter that had been reviewed multiple times. When he travelled to the United States for work, Dr Evans was required to attend an interview at the United States Consulate in Auckland prior to obtaining a visa. He was asked about his historic conviction. Although the evidence is not clear, Dr Evans’ understanding is that he may have to explain his conviction in any subsequent application for a visa to work in the United States. ... APPEAL DENIED: The Judge also explained that even if leave to appeal out of time was granted, she would have declined the application for a discharge without conviction because the direct and indirect consequences of the conviction were not out of all proportion to the gravity of the offending. On the contrary, Dr Evans’ conviction has had no genuine impact on his abilities to travel. The conviction has meant Dr Evans has suffered embarrassment and inconvenience when having to explain his conviction to border control officials, but this has had no impact on his ability to fulfil his travel commitments. The Judge also commented that she did not consider that a miscarriage of justice had occurred. "

From what I saw in Canberra (I missed the other game), the Socceroos were very lucky against us and we looked the better team for most of the match.
Didn't realise that Corey Gameiro is now the Technical Director at WSW. Nice to see he is still active in football after injuries cut his career very short.
Which former Nix foreign import, do we think has left the club and achieved the best career thereafter?
Yan Sasse is doing very well over in Tunisia. Won the League, won the Cup, Quarter Finals in the African Champions League and made the Club World Cup last season.
How does the SPFL rate? But Cammy has been a nailed on starter and now his team is displacing the old firm, despite people saying the level has dropped. Is Libby in Serie A and Championship better? Stensness two matches away from a title with Viking. And McCowatt is being productive!
Singh and Boyd started brightly. Had and have hopes for Zawada with those top flight goals.
Paulsen and Kosta and probably some others I forgot picked up A league gongs.
Browny had a fairly good run outside football. And Greenie of course. Reddy had a lengthy career.
They'd probably be the front runners. Almost all of our imports have declined once they leave us, but thats mostly because they join in their prime or in the latter part of their careers.
Exceptions would be Kurto, as he's consistently been a top keeper in the league since leaving plus has won silverware, and maybe A-Rod
Having a trawl of the Portland Timbers subreddit and there's someone who claims to know someone in the Surman family. They reckon there are a few offers in from England and he'll be on the move during the offseason.
I really hope we had some kind of sell-on clause inserted into the deal...

There is also think there are some other ones as well in his and a couple of the other who went about the same time.
Roy Krishna is now playing in the regional Kerala state league for Super League Kerala club Malappuram and scored his first goal for them last week, which also marked his 100th goal involvement in Indian football (goal or assist):
