Thompson was Marquee then and fred wasn't. fred wasn't given a good enough offer and wasn't given Marquee status over Thompson so when DC United came with a great offer, it was only fair for him to take it up. Mebourne Victory Fans are p*** at their management for the b*** up.

TBH, A-league may consider two marquee players per team in the near future for combination and crowd effects. 3 marquees would be ineffective cost wise but 2 would be better. Less pressure on the players themselves and better team enhancements in game play.

anyone who had suggested that the Nix would be signing Fred before today would have been shut up very quickly on here, it's unreal. Can't wait to here him talk about why he came (and how it feels to have a second aleague title come the end of the season)

While I am happy to have fred grace our team, why do I keep thinking of a mr El**ch? Came with kudos and scored "That" goal then nothing. Still, I am hoping Fred might score some and inspire players other than Smeltz to do so as well.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Bit different, LG, but I see your point. The way some are talking here we've got 18 points in the bag. It's a bit ironic really because for the very first time this season we had a line up against Sydney that looked well-balanced across the park - now it'll have to change again.

Still, I'm hardly complaining. But I assume that if DC are willing to loan him out that means he's not getting consistent first team football for them?

Their season's over StopOut. That may have something to do with it.

He's been injured, though he managed 20 starts and 3 games as sub for DC united not sure how many games they have in a league season over there. He also played in the cups they have in the US and I think he scored the winner in the US open cup final.

Didn't sign him really, just a short stint. We're pretty much just a place where he can train and keep fit for the next MLS season.

I have mixed feelings about this :/ Anyone who thinks that he will propel this team to god like status and make us win the next 6 games by himself is a bit deluded. I'm hopeful it will work out though and give us momentum heading into the backend of the season.

I guess. When I think of a 'signing' I don't think '6 game guest stint' is all.

To be fair, those of us who had heard the rumours and dropped any hints at any stage had those hints removed. The club wanted it to be a major shock, good on them because it has worked

Just remember Fred isn't a major goal scorer, but a great creator, still requires others to finish them off. Can't pass to Smeltz all the time. Others will still need to step up.

Sensational! Congratulations to the Phoenix management.

Hopefully the word will spread, via the media and yellow fever, that we have snapped up a world class Brazilian star (on loan) - "the second best A-League import ever".

There is now genuine hope of achieving the unthinkable and making the play-offs!

We could be looking at crowds of 12,000 flocking to the ring of fire again ...

Always thought he was overrated. Still do actually. He no saviour, a good player, but certainly not someone to turn bottom two into top four.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Gee some of you need to calm down a little, yep good signing but really its not as if he has been been playing at the top leagues.World class Brazilian  who played in the A league and know in the MLS,dosnt quite have that ring to it im afraid.
I hope im wrong but if all it takes is one player to propel us to the playoffs, what the FK are we going to do after 6 games, play our way out again.
Personally i would much prefer to see us sign a striker not yet another midfielder, just hope he isnt headed here for a holiday or we are going to see a lot of them threads about a player again.

What so know the club has a say in what is posted on our forums. I bloody hope thats not the case,or are they just scratching selective backs.

Cut it Ballane.

The only post the club have ever asked to remove is me posting releases instead of encouraging people to go to the club website, a perfectly reasonable request.

Today, I chose to hide a couple of posts that announced it before the club did, I PM'ed the posters and explained that I had made the call.  It was nothing to do with the club.

Allegations like that quickly get stuck on the back page of the Dom Post.

Being 6th and into the top 4 places utilising 6 games. We can't be that far off the pace. Having Fred will help make it a reality.

This thread should be renamed "The band wagoners return"

'Oh we've got Fred, we're top 4 now for sure'

Alot of those people were spouting that in July/August then ran away and called for Ricki head in October and posting threads like 'players we should keep/get rid of' as of last week.

Shame on you all you band wagoners. You'll spout your old 'sack the coach/get rid of this player/I always said....' line if we fail to perform in the next 6 weeks with Fred. Just watch.... Agent 472008-11-15 00:17:34

Fred won't change the fact that if we turn up with the game we had against Perth we're f**ked.  If we add him to the game we played against Sydney, the sky is the limit.

Fred still needs the rest of the side to turn up.

'tis the nature of New Dawners Agent 47.

I think his addition is a welcome addition for various football reasons.

1: Shows players are not scared to sign with us and we are not afraid to chase quality players.
2: Teams that double/triple mark Smeltz no longer have that luxury if Fred is on the pitch. Frees up Smeltz to get some ball again and return to being a contributor (not his fault the last few games)
3: His voice is ideal if he enjoys it here. "I went to play in Wellington and I'd return again" is exactly what free agent footballers need to hear. All they get currently is "I went to Gold Coast for my family" If you are a footballer that has a family, thats hardly encouraging reason to come to Wellington.
4: It gives the wide players a 2nd target man and if the lines are run correctly, makes alot of those wasted deliveries maybe useful, thus building player confidence. I have no doubt Bertos is a confidence player ala Daniel.
5: Forces Ricki to think about his formation. 4-4-2 means that either Brown or Mckain may miss out as I think Ferrante is performing adequately for the moment in a distributing role in the middle. 4-5-1 no longer becomes an option really or we may as well have signed a ball playing midfielder and 4-3-3 just clogs up the attacking channels with no players hitting balls to the target men.

and he scores and makes goals while providing the craft that has been lacking from us in the top third of the pitch.  Melbourne with him in v2 vs melbouren without him in v3 with much the same players was a marked difference.  I think he's an excellent signing, we have a marquee spot open for next year, who knows what could happen?

Exactly my thoughts. I don't expect him to be a savior and no one else should either or everyone will be sorely disappointed.
