#InTheZone V137 is out at yellowfever.co.nz/podcasts

Dan Richardson from the NZ Herald comes off the subs' bench to help the pod discuss the Wellington Phoenix FC demolition of Newcastle Jets, review the rest of Hyundai A-League action, and previous Monday night's game with extra assistance from Melbourne Victory fan Ben Williams. Elsewhere the Football Ferns book their World Cup ticket to Canada, and Exodus Team Wellington coach, Matt Calcott dials in ahead of their first ASB Premiership game.

Another enjoyable listen, made my commute to work bearable, despite sharing half my seat on the bus with the obese sweaty guy sitting in the seat beside me.

Cheers guys.

can't believe you didn't send someone down to Dunedin to cover the indoor social grade division 3 football final. You don't care about local football at all do you? Not even a mention of the score! FFS.

It was the opening game of the season Tegal, not the final. Only one game removed though to be fair. However, calling the ASBP a third tier competition is a bit harsh.

I was referring to Dunedins social indoor football 3rd division grand final.

See what I mean? Nobody knew it was even on. I blame yellow fever.

Keep up mate!

Recently one of the knitting circle had a pot shot at the poddy for not giving (in their opinion) sufficient coverage of the Charridy Cup game (TWs vs. the Knitters). There was some push back.

The comments about Dunedin etc. are tongue in cheek mocking of that criticism... earth humour, arf arf.

I read Oska's retort as further piss taking... 2nd level exagerated response...

All we need now is for 2nd Best to wade in and tell them to GGF.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I can see where you got confused. It was indoor and pretty social. Rest assured the Fever had eyes and ears present.

Thats depressing news that only one ASB Prem coach is a kiwi. That following on from last weeks pod where it was mentioned that all the coaches at the Nix, the AW's and the U20's are Brits. You can see why Calcott was having a bit of a moan. Its hard to believe that there is no pathway for kiwi coaches.

There are two sides to this. One...if it appears that if you are a kiwi then you are unlikely to get a gig higher up the coaching ladder then people we give up. As Calcott said there should be incentives for former kiwi players to get into coaching and if they don't then that is a loss of significant experiance in the local setup. In NZ we have a certain way of doing things....its part of our culture. IMO there should be more kiwi coaches through all the grades.

Two....as a generalisation nationality should not matter. However I am concerned that we are in danger of importing a certain football style if the bulk of coaches come from one country. Particularly if that country(UK) is generally agreed to have a poor coaching training setup and produces a style of game that is not compatible with the modern game. There are of course exceptions and I would rate Hudson as one of those.

When I was playing in NZ there was an obvious bias......."Brit is better". I would have hoped we had moved on from that cultural cringe.

We haven't. Judging by the Phoenix advert with one guy trying to sound like "Mr Leo" from "Good Morning Veitnam" and the other guy sounds like Miles Davis with a bad throat.

Thats a good post and I also have this same issue to a degree with punting Emblen from the AWs role.

Yes Hudson is his own man and he has to have his tools to do the job he wants or you can't hang it all on him. On the flip side, when you consider that Emblen has learned his coaching here and was producing good young sides that played decent football (and not UK ball) its just shown up everything NZF have said in that the pathway to the top job does not come through our system.

I think NZF need to be mindful and I guess Hudson as well, that he has said he is a 4 year hire. At the end of that, there is no really obvious candidate other that the previous Ramon and Emblen plus anyone else that pops up over the next 3 years and I guess coming into consideration would be coaches like Calcott, Bazeley, Greenacre (just local names). The landscape will change no doubt but I would like to think that some time late next year, they will be telling Hudson that he needs to look at bringing a local coach onto his team in addition for possible future considerations and showing the pathway does exist otherwise NZF just look more foolish than they are.

Whether you identify 1 coach and groom him or you identify a group of coaches and let them have a tour each for development, I don't know but it really does read like Hudson is shaking up the culture and make up. You then need someone who comes in after to at least continue or improve it and not let it slip back. I guess an alternative is that you tell Hudson that he must pick a local coach for the u20s and Olys assistant position to help develop otherwise our top 3 mens roles and assistants have the pathway locked off entirely and in 4 years time, we find there is nothing to replace the departed (with any meaningful experience)

Yep...totally agree JV. Hudson is mega ambitious.....which is fine. But I don't think he is the sort of guy who will hang around for a long time. There does need to be some sort of succession plan others wise we are right back where we started when we hired him.

As an aside I thought an obvious place for an up and coming kiwi coach would have been as Ernies assistant at the Nix. Greenacre's appointment was a classic "jobs for the boys appointment IMO. He got the job because his wife works at the Nix. Sure he is a top bloke and was a good pro but he is a trainee. He was not a coach when he was appointed. The job would have suited a young kiwi coach.

I know people will disagree about Greenacre but if you start making exceptions for not appointing kiwi coaches then non of them will ever get a job. There are so few full time jobs out there.

He didn't get the job because his wife works at the Nix.  His wife got a job at the Phoenix because he played for and works at the Nix.

That's a pretty significant difference.

If Hudson last his 4 years and doesn't stay after that, then the next Kiwi off the rank is likely to be coaching now at Central/Northern/Southern League level perhaps? Who around fits that mould you think?

Just on the News' arguments on MVs weaker squad. Think about their attacking 4: Kosta, Finkler, Wiz and Archie - pretty decent. 52 cap aussie in Valeri in midfield and Mahazi has been ok this season, I probably would have preferred princess to be playing - even with Brockie we are not really putting many balls to be contested in the air into the box so Broxham and Milligan there is a strong pairing coming up against us (stronger than princess joining either one of them there and having Mahazi on the bench) and sure Galloway is pretty young but has more HAL appearances than Geria - everyone in that team was from the first team squad.

#InTheZone V139 is out at yellowfever.co.nz/podcasts.

The team is back to digest the news that Wellington Phoenix FC are now Asian Champions after beating West Sydney Wanderers, and look ahead to this weekend's Adelaide United FC fixture without a host of All Whites. Speaking of All Whites, the pod previews their upcoming fixtures against China and Thailand, covers Tommy Smith speaking out, and reviews all the latest ASB Premiership action.

Listened to the podcast this morning. The laws of the game specify that the team that has been fouled gets 10 yards as a right (let’s just say attackers). Therefore, if defenders ask ‘have they asked for 10y ref?’ it’s not really relevant because attackers get that as a right under the LotG and defenders must respect it by retreating to 10y away from the position of the free kick. It’s the attacking teams digression whether or not they use that 10y they are afforded and that’s really around if they take a quick free kick. If they want to take that quick free kick, they are just going to put the ball down and go regardless if the defender is 10y or not. The ceremonial free kick has had a lot of importance placed on it because players practice it bending it around a group of players 10y away (look at Beckhams’ expertise at it) and a lot of coaches do not want to concede free kicks within 25y of goal because of this danger. Thus for the attacking players that practice this, 10y is vitally important. In that respects, if the attackers ask for 10y to be set for them, as the referee is really ‘distracting’ the defenders by taking them the required 10y and the game is at a stop, it’s not overly ‘fair’ for them to take further advantage by then taking a sneaky kick while you are setting the wall at the required distance. While it’s not a rule, its more an understanding that ‘Yes I’ll take the wall to 10y but you are now on the whistle’. That’s why you see referees very much at the site of a free kick with in 25y of goal. They are invariably asking ‘are you taking a quick one?’ or ‘do you want 10y set for you?’ because it’s a goal scoring opportunity for teams that practice it and it’s a control factor to ensure they are afforded every chance to execute that having been fouled.

The podders look back on a disappointing week as Wellington Phoenix FC lose in injury time to Adelaide United FC, the All Whites savage a draw with China, before blowing out to Thailand. But Exodus Team Wellington buck the trend with a win over Waibop United to main their unbeaten start to the ASB Premiership.
