So percentage wise it works out...

             win    draw   loss

Home   47%  34%   19%
Away   19%  19%   62%

Total    33%  26%  41%

After nearly 4 completed seasons in the A-League these results don't make pretty reading......41% of all games lost. OK you could argue that we are were a new club. But that does not cut it coz GC and the Heart have come after us and have done much better.

The killer has been the away record. We will never become a great club unless we address that 62% away losing record. We have to win away games this season to make the top 6. You would not be confident of this happening looking at the historical stats(does not mean it can't happen though)

Would be interesting to learn what the Breakers have specifically done to get on top of the challenges of playing away games in Oz.

Indeed we should be liaising with other NZ teams, especially the Breakers. They've been successful in an aussie league just as we hope to be.
Let's get some inter-code sport strategy discussion going, How do the Breakers play well away from home, what do NZ super14 teams do when traveling to South Africa? ect.

I often wonder if part of the away problem is the time our games are played in aussie.

The team arrives a day or so before a game, and I dont think that gives the players body clock enough time to adjust. So a night game kicking off at 7:30pm, would be like starting at 9:30pm, and it might explain why the wheels seem to fall off late in the 2nd half in games.

If we played the 1st games in double headers on sat/suns, things might improve. I dont have any stats to try and back this up, but its just a feeling I get from watching the games.

Really?
Heart, with a (relatively) star-studded team, have a 30% 26% 43% W-D-L record.

Does not make our record any better, but Heart's is far from flash thus far.

Agree that we need to find a way of being comfortable on our travels. IMO that is a symptom of the general playing style we have adopted (home & away) and the way in which we use the middle of the park in particular. Read into that what you will.

I know, I know, its serious!

That's a terrible result for us - not just because of the 3 points the Heart pick up but we really needed the Fury to feel they still have something left to play for as the play the Jets twice over the next week or so.

Some of them are playing for contracts individually and as a club are still trying to give the FFA a reason to keep them afloat.

Fuck this stupid game

My feeling is that the Fury will fight to the bitter end of their season. Which happens to be at RoF!

Heart's rise/Adelaide's fall started really when the Heart stole that dramatic win in Adelaide. Now we have them to contend with.

Hopefully Sydney park the bus, or nick a handball goal against Newcastle. A result there would be nice.

if we don't pick up 3 points against the Victory it could be all over for our top 6 chances. After the Victory we are away against CCM and then the Roar. Can't see any points there....meanwhile the Jets will probably pick up max points with easy games against the Fury(twice)
We could overtake the Heart but that would still leave us in 7th. The Victory and the Jets are in great form at the moment.....we will need an amazing run of results to make 6th.

They have played 2 more games than us, but we really have to win and win big. It sucks we have to hope other results go our way.

Well done Brisbane, 50 points in 24 games. Wish that could be us.

I would be surprised if 16 points over our last 8 games isn't enough to get into the top 6 (meaning 42 points) in total.

Achievable, but would require a 5-1-2 or 4-4-0 record coming down the home straight. Best just to ignore what is happening elsewhere and focus on getting the results at that level (and we don't have to "win big", just winning is fine).

We may get through with 1 or 2 fewer points. If 42 points proves insufficient, we would have been dealt a rough hand.

I know, I know, its serious!

our goal difference is sh*t Turfmoore. needs to come down significantly. A clean sheet would be a bloody miracle against Victory.

I wouldn't get too hung up on it. Goal difference at most means less than 1 point. Picking up points is what it is all about. A 2-1 win followed by a 6-0 loss is always better than two 0-0 draws (morale impact notwithstanding).

We can qualify with points alone and sh*t goal difference. We can't qualify with a good goal difference (alone).

And only once in 5 years of A-League has a play-off place been decided on goal difference (and even that was only needed after Sydney got some points docked, so they had a vastly superior match record to start with).

Hence my 'Red Herring' stance.

Agree about clean sheet aspirations though.

I know, I know, its serious!

If we want to make the top 6 then the team has to perform and then we won't have to hope other teams do the job we should have already done.

Na man its way worse than that.
1 plays 2 over 2 legs (home and away)
3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5
The winners of those two games play
Then the winner of that game gets to play the loser of the top 2
Then the winner of the game plays the winner of the top 2 in the finally grand final.
So if you in the places 3 to 6 you have beat almost every other team in the top 6 to win.
