still gonna be very tough to break that top 6, with all the teams above us with game sin hand. jets results are going to be key, we need them to lose at least one of their catch up matches. Perth gone after their curent run, dramatic turn of form after a start of 5 wins.

How sad would that table have looked had we lost to the jest.

Huge relief. Onwards and upwards lads.

I know, I know, its serious!

Interesting to look at a form table for the last six games...

  Pl W D L F A Pts Brisbane Roar 6 4 2 0 15 7 14 Newcastle Jets 6 4 1 1 8 5 13 Wellington Phoenix 6 3 1 2 11 8 10 Melbourne Victory 6 2 3 1 13 11 9 Gold Coast United 6 3 0 3 10 8 9 Adelaide United 6 3 0 3 9 8 9 Sydney FC 6 2 1 3 5 7 7 North Queensland Fury 6 2 1 3 4 8 7 Central Coast Mariners 6 1 3 2 11 12 6 Perth Glory 6 1 2 3 7 10 5 Melbourne Heart 6 1 1 4 3 11 4

^^Very interesting.

I still think if we play like we're meant to be in the top 6, we'll sneak in there. Plenty of games left to go and Melbourne Still have to play all of the top 4.

Interesting Table, I said a few weeks ago that the Mariners wheels were about to fall off and it seems to be the case and I can actually see them falling out of the six

Since there is quite a difference in the amount of games played between some teams (CCM 18 games vs Roar 22games) I had a look at pts/game. Interestingly the table hardly changes, just Jets and Victory swap positions:

Position          Pl     Pts/Game
1     Brisbane Roar     22     2.14
2     Adelaide United     20     1.85
3     Gold Coast United     19     1.74
4     Central Coast Mariners     18     1.67
5     Newcastle Jets     19     1.32
6     Melbourne Victory     20     1.30
7     Wellington Phoenix     21     1.19
8     Melbourne Heart     22     1.09
9     North Queensland Fury     20     0.90
10     Sydney FC     20     0.90
11     Perth Glory     21     0.81

Also, I don't think we have won back-to-back games all season.

2010 season highlight..the number of different ways a simple league table can be sliced diced and interpreted..

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Biggest worry is at this late stage there is still a huge difference in number of games played, which completely screws the table.
Permalink Permalink

That's your biggest worry? I'm more concerned with our being outside the playoffs.

I'm not sure why so many people are upset about the uneven schedule. The effect of the schedule has been exagerated by the two postponed matches, so not all of it can be helped.

I think all the straw-clutching that's going on, kind of sums up what kind of season it's been.

Here's another one, 25% of the goals that Newcastle have conceded this season were scored on Saturday, and according to LF1's form table, only one other side has scored against them in the last 6 matches. We've turned the corner (again)

As long as it is not Leo taking the corners we keep turning!

pretty interesting perspectives here. But theres one obvious corner that we turned this week, its clearly the fact that:
We Played Towards the Zone in the 2nd Half!

I swear we havn't done that often enough and when Browny wore the armband, he clicked onto the fact and now we're back

Only the 2nd time this year, think the last game against the Heart was the other?

I have often wondered about that this season. Last year it was almost a given that we would always play towards the YF end when given the oppotunity, regardless of conditions

I am sure that in the first 3 seasons we would attack the YF end more often and score most of our goals in the 2nd half.

This has been discussed before with some stats to back it up.

The draw this year is a disaster - no-one who has played football would ever advocate a draw with that kind of disparity in games played.  I really have no idea who is doing well and who is struggling in that mid table...

It's fine and not a problem at all

Actually, the biggest issuses causing this problem are the midweek games and the byes.
What is it about football downunder. As soon as we get a league thats working we make life difficult for ourselves by inviting every Tom Dick and Harry into it.
An 8  team A League would produce better football, more support and greater financial stabilty. You cant tell me that Hearts havent effected the stability of Victory this year, in the same way that, at this stage, another team in NZ would effect the Phoenix.
Same thing happened with the original NZ National League, 8 to 14 and now there is talk of increasing the ASB Premiership before it has established itself.
Promotion / Relegation maybe, but not invitational. Even numbers and weekend games only. Stuff trying to avoid AFL, NRL, Cricket. If the product is good enough people will come.

I don't agree with the last part. If we were up against AFL, NRL etc. football would suffer, as it it not the major sport. There would also be a ground clash. Where would the Nix play in the rugby season? A league teams must have top facilities for TV.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

It's interesting that everyone has said the game disparities have made it hard to work out how teams are actually doing in comparison with one another even though the Points Per Game tables have very closely matched the real table. I mean, it could just be a statistical anomaly and I'm not advocating such a weird schedule, but it is interesting nonetheless.

If we hadn't had two games postponed, the most games played would be 22 and the least 20. Not much of a big deal, is it? Every couple of weeks this thread collects a few complaints, so some people obviously can't cope.... whinging Kiwis, eh

I'll help out those struggling with the table. This is how things stand:
Brisbane are going really well. Adelaide are fading, with Central Coast and Gold Coast well positioned to take advantage.

The Jets, Victory and us are scrapping it out for the next two spots. The Jets are marginally better placed than Victory. We're the outside bet.

Perth and North Queensland are having a tough time. Melbourne Heart and Sydney are only going marginally better.

You're welcome.

I agree that the midweek games are not really a success. Significantly lower crowds can't be good.

If I recall correctly, wasn't the original plan for two expansion teams this year but only Heart was ready and the second Sydney team were postponed until next season. Hence, it's a temporary thing. Having said that, I remember reading somewhere that the second Sydney team have now been canned, despite being originally scheduled for inclusion from next season - so we might be stuck with an odd number for a while longer.
