Am I missing something here (from theHerald this morning)?

"While the win was not enough to get Ricki Herbert's team back into the top six, they are at least back in the play-off mix."

Yeah, you're missing that Terry Maddaford can't count.

Maddaford's use of the words "top six" suggests that he wasn't overly distracted by the thought of a top four play-off system

Top four possibly out of the question given not only the current gap back to fifth but also the games in hand factor. 5th or 6th is well on the cards though, I think 5th is a realistic target.Arsenal2010-12-07 01:56:03

The great thing about this draw is that we tend to play the weaker teams at (our) home and the stronger teams away.

That wouldn't be a good thing for most teams but it is for us.

Lock down some solid wins at home and hope to cause an upset or two on the road...

I reckon we've got 4 games against sides we are competing with for 5th/6th (middle four - M4) and 4 against the top sides (T4), with three against the strugglers (Bottom 3 - B3).  Bit of a marginal call where you draw the line between middle and bottom, but hey ...

Maybe if you think Sydney has come right with Brosque back and a run of pretty good results then you'd count them as in contention in the middle of the table as well.  In which case we have 5 games against 5th/6th contenders, 4 vs the top 4 teams and just the two vs the bottom two.

Go Nix.

If Newcastle win those two games in hand = massive mid-table gap.

Fuck this stupid game

Permalink Permalink

The Heart have been in horror form of late - when wolfman posted the table after 15 games, they had 5 wins, 5 draws and 5 losses. In the next five games they've lost 4 and drawn the other, scoring no goals in the process. And they have the Melbourne derby this week.

Jets' good play not great for us (unless we can win the matches against them). Is Jeffers making that much of a difference?

We need to just keep winning, it'll be some time before the Games Played gap closes up with the Jets. They have a bye this week (of course) while we play Gold Coast, and then our next game after that is against them. Though they are in very good form, I can totally see this going to a massive scrap between Nix/Heart/Victory/Sydney for 6th place.

Based on the halfway table, the 4th place cut off will be 52 points and the six place 34 points.

However, there is a reasonable chance that one of the top four will fall off the pace, and that things will heat up in the race for the playoffs. Therefore cut-offs might be more like 40 and 48 points for 6th and 4th respectively (note, last year 6th place was the equivalent of 38 points, but that was 6th out of 10, so you would expect 6th out of 11 to have a slightly higher points per game ratio).

For the phoenix, the 40 point target means 18 points in the last 11 games (can be achieved with a 5-3-3 record).

Very achievable, but that target is a moving one, so as Sneaky says, we just gotta keep on winning.

Wouldn't a couple of wins before Christmas be handy.

I know, I know, its serious!

Nix have played the second most number of games ... third worst goal difference ... me thinks a lost to the Scum is bye bye to the finals as they have 3 games in hand and a 14 goal advantage in goal difference ....

Good luck ... hope you pack em in and sing the Nix home..

Permalink Permalink

Played 27 games for 10 wins, 10 draws, 7 losses.
Scored 37 goals, conceeded 29.

Roar, Adelaide, GCU, and CCM are almost certian for the top 6, and the Jets defence will get them a spot. So its between us, Sydney, Heart, Victory and Glory for the last spot, and the Victory seem to be getting their mojo back, so I think they will get the final spot .

Here's a scary stat. Remember our season 1 defense (yes all those painful memories come flooding back) - after 20 games they had only conceded only 1 more goal than this season's defense but we had scored 2 more goals.

We had a better GD, after 20 games, in season 1.
