We've played two of the top teams - Adelaide and Victory - away from home. I agree we should've beat Perth once out of the two times we played them, but apart from that I think we've had expected results. Would look even better if we hung on against ADL, of course.

Would you expect to take points off them if we were at home though?  They just seem way better than us right now

One emergency accumulation of 3 pts used up.  How many do we have left?

We have beaten those below us relatively comfortably but can't catch a break against the top 4. It looks like 5th is a fair reflection of us as a team right now. Personally, I picked us to come 7th at the start of the season. 5th would be a good result and give us something to build upon if we can maintain these results.

I don't agree. We were unlucky with one refereeing call at the end against Adelaide but the performance was poor. I don't think anyone can say we have played well and lost this season.

I don't agree.  Adelaide were clearly the better team but it wasn't one refereeing call. It was a f*ck load of them.

Is JD going to get back on the bandwagon after jumping off last week?

At some point, we need to put together a little run. Whether its 4 wins on the trot or 16 points across 7 games or something like that, that just propels us up the table and keeps us away from the rest.

It is a bloody odd table though. So split in 2.

Are we the worst good team or the best worst team? Table says we are closer to the top than the bottom I guess.

So, here we are 8 weeks in.

4 wins, 4 losses.

Of the 4 losses 3 have been 2 - 1, and one has been 2 - 0.

We have the second most goals in the league (15) behind MVC's 18 and our Goals Against is middle of the table.

Goals For:

MVC 18

WPX 15

PER 13

ADL 13

MCY 12

SYD 11

BRI 9

NEW 7

WSW 6

CCM 5

Goals Against:

SYD 5

ADL 7

MVC 8

PER 9

CCM 10

WPX 11

BRI 12

WSW 12

NEW 16

MCY 19

Our goal difference is +4

Goal Difference:

MVC +10

ADL +6

SYD +6

PER +4

WPX +4

BRI -3

CCM -5

WSW -6

MCY -7

NEW -9

We are 5th, with a 6 point break over 6th.

We are in the top half, clearly. We were worried about where goals were going to come from, and we have the second most GF in the league and Nathan Burns is top of the golden boot race.

Of our loses, only the MVC away game is one where we were not in with a chance of a draw. We could have had draws in round 1 at home against Glory and in round 6 away to Adelaide, but conceded last minute goals.

_IF_ we had drawn those two games 1 - 1 the top of the table would look like this:

MVC 18 points +10 GD

ADL 17 points +5 GD

PER 17 points +3 GD

SYD 16 points +6 GD

WPX 14 points +6 GD

With CCM a distant 6th on 6 poits still... If that was how the table was sitting right now I think we'd all be pretty pleased.

I am not saying that is how it should be, just that it was not a hundred miles off being that way. I think that shows we really are in the mix.

I have to say I am pretty stoked with that report card after 8 rounds.

With Newcastle and CCM in the next two rounds we really need to make sure we get the full 6 points.

Technical adjustment.
Adelaide are on 17 now so take 2 points off because the win becomes a draw and they are on 15. So the top 5 would be all 1 point apart.

And against Perth at Perth in round 7??  We were never in line for a draw there.

But this thread is about how we're tracking this season (cumulative results), not if we are playing well.

The table does not differentiate between "playing well and losing" vs "playing poorly and losing". It reflects the game results, regardless of how we played - so Junior82 is correct in saying we were unlucky. Unlucky, because we were very close to pinching a point from Adelaide, you could say "an undeserved point", in fairness to your opinion above.

I disagree. Conceding a goal in the last minute isn't being unlucky. It's poor defending and not playing well enough for 90 minutes. One of those goals we didn't mark a set piece and the other one was a howler. There was nothing unlucky in either.  A lot of football results would be different if football was an 85 minute game. If we discounted goals scored between minutes 32 and 36 we would also have 2 extra competition points. I don't see why conceding in the last 5 minutes makes you unlucky but conceding between minutes 32 and 36 isn't unlucky somehow? Why do the last 5 minutes get some extra status as being the unlucky period? It's all just part of the game.

I think mentioning the performances and who we have played is relevant because the table by itself is meaningless. All the teams have had different playing schedules so to get a gauge on where teams really are you need to factor in who they have played. For instance, Perth is 1st but 7 of their 8 games have been against teams ranked 5th or lower and the only time they have played one of the top 4, they lost.

At the end of the season the table is God. Until that point the table is just a guide to how teams are going.

Permalink Permalink

We are going well though, and despite playing poorly against Adelaide we almost held on for a point. I'd say it was disappointing rather than unlucky. As that parallel universe table shows, as long as we keep playing well and getting wins at home, hanging on to get draws and the odd win away from home should comfortably secure us a playoff spot, possibly even a top four one.

Permalink Permalink

Yes, my point was that despite what actually happened we were not 100 miles away from a situation where we are very very very close to the teams above us. You may or may not be able apply similar logic to whether we may or may not have been in with a sniff of a point away at Perth.

The point I was trying to make was to highlight it is not as if we went away and lost 5 - 0 at the Victory, 5 - 0 at Adelaide and 5 - 0 at Perth...

Despite how it has turned out, we're not that far away from being in a place where we'd all be very pleased. We're not (quite) there though.

Despite that, I can't bring myself to eb unhappy about how we are going.

It's still our best start ever.
