The thing that pisses me off the most about this thread is that all the people who are slagging Marco off and his dad have absolutely no idea what has gone on behind the scenes. All the attacks have been on Marco but has anyone stopped to find out what has actually gone on and questioned the clubs antics.

The thing that pisses me off about this thread is is that people make gross generalisations without actually reading the thread. To help you out the clubs part in this has been questioned dozens of times. And that goes for the media as well.

Not convinced this is true.  last year he was injured/having surgery. Would a player really want to get out of a contract when he has no ability to show this ability to a potential new club?

Thanks rj, you stole my post there.

Also Soley would do well to remember that he is only hearing one side of this as well.

In some respects, but you could have mentioned they don't know who their manager will be next season. Probably the single most important factor a young player looking to move would want to know?

Well 2B is saying he isn't convinced the story is true because Marco was injured. The whole premise of the story is based on Tony P saying that Rodi wanted Marco out a year ago.

I'm just ducking for cover here...but...

JD: No of course not, I did that interview with Worthington after reading a whole lot of "let's hope Marco sustains a career-ending injury" etc etc on here.  I was trying to give some perspective.  I wish he hadn't chosen that particular quote, but I still stand by it.  Read the rest of the story for context.  I say that of course we won't support him playing for another team, but he's still a Kiwi lad so hate is a bit strong.

Come on HN, those players have gone to clubs in the same league. ALthough it might be good for NZ football,  I would be surprised if sending our players to rival clubs in the a-league is what the phoenix management, or the majority of fans, think that is what the club is meant to be about.

Fury, you're right.

But if you accept that we can't keep everyone, then News's point about generating careers is a valid one.

But for the Phoenix it's pretty likely that Marco and Kosta would both be playing NZFC today.

So, overall, a silver lining at least?

Yes, a silver lining, but it is a massive blow to my fan's ego to be told that the Tards - finishing one place ahead of us - are such a massively superior choice than the Nix. As I've kept saying, I've never cursed Marco, I've just been upset about what losing him might mean for our club. I am ambitious that we can be league winners won day, and we certainly won't be if every young gun we unearth jumps ship at the first opportunity.

How's the collar-bone?

We haven't sent them though have we?  Would New Zealand football really be better with Moss or Paston never playing because they are behind each other?  The Smeltz situation was beyond our control as well.  To fold them in to the youngster situation and claim the club is f**ked (which some seem to be doing) is a massive stretch and a re-wrie of history.

Like the people saying now that it was a disgracce Kosta didn't go to SOuth AFrica because he's the besterest striker ever.

to be honest, whether this yarn is true or not, a mate told me that when he was drinking in town another player who I won't name but has left the club said that Marco was off to Melbourne and that hes a d*** for it... Some part of me calls this story crap tho.

I heard a rumour
They travel far
You know what it's like
The way people are
They talk and they talk
Though they don't understand
They'll whisper and whisper
And lie on demand
Please tell me now
I want to know
I have to hear it from your lips
Say it's not so

I heard it on Monday
And I laughed a while
I heard it on Tuesday
I managed to smile
I heard it on Wednesday
My patience was tried
I heard it on Thursday
And I hurt inside
I want to know
The depths of your mind
Tell me this whole thing is madness
And we're doing fine
Put your little hand in mine
And believe in love
Put your head on my chest
And breathe love
Breathe love
Breathe love
Breathe love

I heard it from Peter
Who heard it from Paul
Who heard it from someone
I don't know at all
I heard it from Mary
Who heard it from Ruth
Who swore on the bible
She's telling the truth
I heard it from Simon
Who heard it from James
Confirming with Sarah
That I was to blame
I heard it from Joseph
Who heard it from John
Who said with conviction
That all hope was gone
So I need to know
Your alibis
I need to hear that you love me
Before you say goodbye
Before you say goodbye
Before you say goodbye
Before you say goodbye

Nothing wrong with developing NZ players and giving them professional careers, but the club is also a business, so should be looking to make money off that investment as well, not just watching them leave.

Not saying they're not trying to keep Marco though :)

Smith loves the box.

Found this that someone wise wrote earlier in thsi thread:

Need to be careful that we don't get get caught up in the 'big club' attitude.  It's not like we're Orient to the Victory's Arsenal.  It's not the sort of transfer where you think, oh yes glad he's getting a chance with a bigger club.

He's going to the club that finished one place ahead of us in the final wash-up for the last two seasons, a club that may have Kevin Muscat as a guinea pig style coach.

The example is a bit OTT, isn't it? It's more like Everton and Arsenal if we're honest with ourselves.

Not sure I agree completely with that. They also have considerably larger crowds than us, a record of success in the competition and, as far as I know, they aren't stumbling from one financial crisis to the next.

I'd say we're more Sunderland or Everton than Leyton Orient, possibly

From a non-footballing standpoint, he should stay because loyalty isn't dead in football, he got his chance thanks to the YF/Nix, and if he stays with us we will always cheer him on as he is our future.

From a career perspective, I think he will probably develop more as a footballer in a different club.

Ricki has done good things for NZ football, but I personally dont think he has the skill as a coach to develop younger players and take them to the next level. plus I still have question marks about his all round coaching ability.

I think this is basically a problem that holds NZ football back. We dont have any (correct me if I am wrong) world class coaches working with youth players to take them to the next level.

There is my opinion, who wants to have a crack.
