Looks like we are not in agreement with this bit from the match summary on Sportal

"The Phoenix can go home with their heads held high after an encouraging performance and the promising of a competitive season."

Paston 7 no problems, solid not spectacular.
Muscat 6 No complaints but offered little going forward

Durante 5 couldnt cope with an average jets front line

Sigmund 5.5 one moment at start where he should have cleared that lead to a Durante foul whichwas poor, cant give to high a rating to a defenda in a poor defence

Lochhead 5not 2 bad goin forward, howevereaten alive by Song, and costly at the back

Hearfield 7 got into good positions kept ball wellish

Brown6 went missing at times and didnt ofer much in final third

Mckain 6 had a few good attacking runs but was wateful with the ball and chose thewrong option too often

Bertos8 strong runs, always dangerous in the final third and played well with Iffil and Greenacre. Two good assists

Iffil 6 held up ball reasonably well, but lukd tird and didnt get thru too much work.

Greenacre 7 played quite well up front, luky with goal but did luk threatening, went missing once he was all alone up front.

Diego and Daniel 5.5 Nowhere near the impact I had expected from either.

RH 5Two ineffective substitutions, a central midfield that created little and was wasteful, played a forward hu was nowhere near fit (Iffil)and knew he wudnt play the full 90, yet decided agianst bringing over another decent forward (Costa)

Overall 6
I would agree with this although the defence should all go down by 1.

May be doing the Nix turnstiles a big favour if that is the message from the Media that kids hear, as opposed to the wailing and nashing from some of the YF on this thread.

I'll say one thing here, the number of long balls played by Newcastle was at least 3 times greater than us, so anyone wailing about long ball merchants will be banned.

(Yes, I'm an angry man)

5 players can go home with their heads held high, mind you win as a team, lose as a team

Terry S take your money and run while you still have got the chance.
To say I'm dissappointed is an understatement.
Again the coach and players build the team up to be world beaters.
Again I fall for what they are telling me.
I waited for 6 bloody months and all I can see is the mirror image of last years team. Long f**king ball, defence sitting too deep and bloody ball watching.
I know it's only the first game but man it hurts heaps.
I want to take my Phoenix shirt and burn the bloody thing.
We have just played right into the hands of those bloody aussies that don't want us in the league!!!!
Perth next week, I just don't know with the Phoenix, if they are going to turn up and play.
PISSED OFF I AM.
I understand that we can't win every game, but I do expect these so called professionals to turn up and attempt to play entertaining football. Is that asking too much!!!!

How were we built up to be world beaters? Just the same sh*t different year we are just a lower/mid table team.

That's a banning.
It not that the banning is needed for as sadly in the first half thats what it looked like.

Its this that the ban should be done for.

"I want to take my Phoenix shirt and burn the bloody thing." Dont care how badly they play if it comes to that you are no bloody fan.

I can see that immediately post match Ballane... I'm pretty sure PP is over it now, but at around 81 minutes this evening I could have felt the same way.

Having watched most of the games that we have been lucky to see this weekend. For me one of the big differences is the speed with which most teams seem to be able to counter attack. Yet when we play yet again there just dosnt seem to be the ability for that quick counter. At times tonite it was knock it around the back then bang it up and hope the guys are there.Harsh yes but it would be nice to see some nice quick counter for a change. ballane2009-08-09 20:30:03

Take a look at all the other teams in their games this weekend and start trembling. Poorest game this round by a country mile
200% improvement might get us going. Lucky it's Perth next week and not GC or a hurt Melbin (or anyone else for that matter)

Poor team selection IMO.  If there's no creativity and pace in central in midfield we ain't gonna create.  We're just inviting teams to come at us and we know we can't defend tightly for 90 minutes.  After all the talk, it was the conservative approach of last season again which is the biggest disapointment for me when we should have been looking for three points.  That ain't gonna win us jack sh*t. Can't fault the effort but Diego has to start next week and the defence have to stop ball watching.

Perth were worse, considering their much vaunted international signings. Melbourne were abysmal and Brisbane bombed chance after chance. All their fans will be just as pissed off as us, if not more.

Hmm, guess I'm pretty out of place in saying that I didn't think that is was an attrocious performance? Not remotely great, just average. Agreed CM and Def were poor, plenty of space for improvement, but not complete sh*thouse as a lot would think based on what is being said on the forum. bigtobz2009-08-09 20:43:34

If you think Allsop and Archie wouldn't have banged a few past our leaky defence even when Melbin played like they did then that's a worry. They played bad by their standards but above todays level.
The level dropped considerably today, like some of the trips last season. Maybe better at home, we hope

I think that (contrary to what most have said) Diego actually looked really good when he got the ball. He ran through the middle of the midfield and attempted to play a ball onto the strikers. Although he didnt create a goal, I think that if he was given more time on the field he could really make an impact on the team.

I do get upset when people talk about stopping support. We get enough of that with the All Blacks.

Back when the Rabbitohs were sh*t, I remember that their fans would boo Jesus if he was on the opposing team.

First off impression: Ricki must go.

Can't see us getting anywhere near the top 4 with Herbert in charge.
He clearly doesn't value players who can hold the ball, and play a pass.
I feel like we're playin with 4 centre backs with McKain & Brown in the middle. Everytime the ball came near McKain, he put his foot through it, and sent it miles away from any of our players.

I take news' point about the Jets playing more long balls than us, but they were already 2 goals up, and looking comfortable. You don't see many good teams hoofing it when they are losing.

Durante must be ashamed of himself tonight.
A centrebacks first and most important job is to mark the striker, and Andy failed to do that on several times tonight. Most fatally for the third goal.

Either Ferrrante or Diego MUST come in for next week, and I would probably drop Durante for Mckain.
We should value players with skill, vision and creativity.

To summarise the Nix problems tonight...

Cr*p defending.
Cr*p defending.
Cr*p defending.

Come to think of it, that was the big problem in their first season.
And their second season.
And now, in the first game of their third season...

Oh, no! It's Deja Vu... all over again!

More i think about it the more this sort of comment really pisses me off.

"I want to take my Phoenix shirt and burn the bloody thing."

Some of you really have no idea about what being a supporter is.

Yep you slag your team off when they lose or play like crap  or just are bloody hopeless. But NO matter what happens you still support them.

Yeah. Pissed of about such poor defending and the loss. But I'll still be there on Sunday in full voice going hundreds supporting the lads. 3 points against Perth.

Disappointing game tonight. Never felt confident our defence would snap their attacks. Hopefully a much better performance on Sunday.

As he should be, since he arrived cant seem to recall him playing any game to the level he played when he won the grand final with the jets.
