Yeah, I'm not a fan of the get there the day before warriors style of doing it. Not enough time to climatise to the conditions, I reckon. Not an excuse though, coz we played dreadful.
Are you serious? It's Sydney, not La Paz.

As for the game? Rubbish. Oh well.

I mean more to get rid of the jet lag. But during summer, will need to get early than the day before.

Thought we were travelling well at HT but was waiting for us to take command as 2nd half went on. Funnily I reckon Ricki messed up by not making his traditional 65th minute sub and bringing Daniel on. Subbing off Greenacre in favour of Hearfield never had a hope of working.

You cant win if you dont try.
Inevitable as those w**ker commenators say if you let the forwards camp out so deep.
No midfield still, mind you, only had two and a half years to fix that Ricky

The lack of effort this team shows all too often can only be put down to preperation and a sh*t coach

Sorry you can make all sorts of comments about the performance, but lack of heart wasn't one of them.  Just didn't keep hold of the ball as well as the second half last week and without the ball we are just not going to create.

Tough one to watch. but ah well. Itll soon be forgotten, when we win 3-0 against Adelaide next week.

Perhaps Crowther to hold his position?

tough day at the office!!!!
Lets face it we were outplayed. They dominated possession....kept pushing us deeper and deeper. We defended well but you could see the goal was going to come.
You can see why Sydney are now top of the table....well organised, good defence and a dominating midfield.
We are not a bad side but for me we are still two players short in two key positions.....both  midfielders. Diego looks out of form and Ferrante tries hard but is not good enough. If you could wave a magic wand then I would have simon Elliot playing beside mCain and Fred instead of Diego.
we just can't control the midfield and create stuff.....until we do we will struggle against the better a-league teams.
Top game from Super Leo!!!!

Mckain and Mucsat especially looked out of sorts defending and the passing was poor, hopeful long balls,  Greenacre was not himself either.

I had the sense that it was Greenacre's turn this week and that Ricky didn't want to bring Iffil off again.  Unless he had taken a knock Greenacre should never come off because we don't have a like for like replacement.

I hate football.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I'm sick of these boring negative tactics everytime we play away. Why does it have to be any different?  We need to stop giving teams so much respect and just go out every wekk to f**k every one up.  Back ourselves.

If you talk about it like it's a disadvantage to play away from home, like Ricki does with his "we'll be a bit more conservative away from home" then we'll play like it.  It is one of my biggest bug bears in the game and I don't understand why it's so widely accepted as a sensible tactic/mind set.

It's the same size pitch, the same players and the same f**ken goal at the other end, just play to your strengths and attack!

couldnt agree more.

if a win was only two points, ok maybe you could make a case for playing for the draw against some sides, but in this league all the teams are much of a muchness and a win is worth three draws. it is daft to play for anything other than a win/

Well, for mind Crowther did well, after his early shaky spell. He sure was nervous, but he made some good saves.

The midfield lacked any passion or real movement to create anything. Daniel should have come on for Diego, Lia should have come on to replace Muscat.

Ifill looked to me to be carrying his groin injury, I saw him at one stage shaking/stretching his leg as he was jogging, he knew he wasn't 100%.

But the worst aspect of the entire game, was a return to last season's defensive mindset. The team never got out of first gear, they were always camping back too far. The midfield was miles away from Greenacre up front.
And it's all the more disappointing after the positive efforts of the last two weeks.

Need something creative to happen next week, Adelaide will put us to the sword otherwise.

This 4231 isn't working - Diego needs to control that and he's not showed he's up to it
Ricki needed to go to 442 with Hearfield for Diego or Hearfield for ferrante, but in reality with ferrante, hearfield, Daniel and a non-efective Diego he's got no shots to fire in midfield.  Give Marcos a go?

On a positive note Vettorri and O'Brien have a 67 run partnership and only need 109 for the win

I think for next week 442 with the diamond formation is our best chance. Bertos at the front and Lia/Brown in the left position but more defensive, Diego in the right position but more offensive and Mckain at the back. Anyone else agree?

Hmmmmmm. Not a good game by the team. Ferrente and Diego are not working on the same channel. McCain covered a lot of ground and Lia did a good job. What on earth was Daniel meant to do in 10 minutes?? I think the team will know that they didn't perform. After a shaky start I thought Crowther pulled off a couple of great saves.

I disagree. I thought it was because he wanted more effort. Daniel is not and 'effort' guy

looked good in patches - the last one being around 70 mins

didn't get  a lot from that ref

seemed far too willing to drop deep in the second half

a worry when we lost possesion foir their second - looked like lochy thought he was playing right half as a result manny was drawn too central and failed to put pressure on brosque for the cross

still impressed by leo, ifill and greenacre

a bit of vision in centr- mid wouldn't go amiss

Pretty disappointing. Midfield looked pretty flat as per usual apart from Bertos. I think we need to play our home formation all the time because there's something pretty poor about the "play for the draw" mindset. You can only see 3 players whenever we have a decent attack and that isn't good enough. Diego was awful and it was a good change by Ricki. I actually thought Ferrante made a large improvement but he is still a bit slow on the ball.

Bring on next week, Adelaide are there for the taking. Sydney are clearly title contenders and we weren't too far off a result so lets keep the doom and gloom at a minimum.chocnut2009-08-30 21:50:52

I thought the ref was absolutely fine.

Sydney just better structured in the midfield. I didn't think we played that great in the first half - Sydney also didn't have a good first half, but came out strong in the second. We didn't improve - possibly we were worse, but a lot of it was them playing better. Ifill I though had a good first half, but don't think he had a good second half. Greenacre I was again unimpressed with. Needs to work on his control of the ball.

The midfield was just at sea at times (obviously apart from Bertos). Half the time they were all standing too close together, then five minutes later they're nowhere to be seen. Actually, I hate Daniel but he had a couple of good touches when he came on. Sydney look a good, solid team, but hardly that flash. We could still beat them at home. We did have some chance in that second half before they scored. Ferrante had a good strike - if that goes in it's a different ball game. Not sure whether we were actually less fit, or we just looked more unfit because we were rather ragged.

I said at half time I was worried about the aerial crosses. Opposition teams are getting too many headers with none of our players jumping for it. The defence actually did better facing the ball on the ground - some good scrambling and good crucial tackles.

To me the starting XI more or less picks itself at the moment bar one or two calls to make in midfield between Brown/Lia/Ferrante/Daniel/Diego/Hearfield.
The best shape for the players on the park for me is 433, we need a stronger engine in midfield, so let McKain anchor two men slightly more forward so we have a solid shape in the middle, we looked very flat there tonight.
Up front we need support for Greenacre and have to have our two biggest threats to defences far forward enough to give them trouble.
Use this sort of system home AND away and lets start playing football that encourages goals for the Phoenix and start getting some momentum. Winning football will get us the points we need, we won't come near the playoffs if we go for a draw every time we play away.

ferrante has got too go, although i will give him credit for his great shot on goal.

as ferrante has had about 20 lives i think deigo gets another chance as he has impressed in the previous games - mostly Perth match

i surprisingly wasnt that worked up about this nix loss as i think even though they lost they played a pretty good style of football and ultimatly Sydney was just better and put away their chances

Ferrante sh*te again, thats 3 games in a row he's been easily one of the worst players on the field. Diego saved him from being the worst today. I would really like to see Lia start..he seems to link more effectively with the front men.

i'm pretty sure Ferrante had the best shot on goal in the whole match. No one else had a better shot.

i also remember him tracking back constantly and putting in good slide tackles.

not our worst player at all.

worst = Deigo.
