I like Sam too.

And I'm not just saying that so he offers my youngest a scholarship spot in the academy. ;)

Seems an excellent appointment of a very promising young (36) coach.

Already very experienced for his age with his background as a youth and academy coach at major English clubs West Brom and Birmingham City and NZ u-17 assistant to Jose last year, plus senior coach at Melville.

And the influence of his dad Roger, a NZ coaching legend.

been trying to get hold of the fan engagement person at the phoenix but for some reason he will not engage with me . i have emailed him multiple times but i do not get a reply. what is the point of hiring a fan engagement person if they do not engage with the fans.

Good luck with that think we must be in the wrong demographic group and they cant be arsed with us.Stopped paying into the Phoenix Fund as they just couldnt be bothered answering  me after multiple attempts to engage them.Including talking to Dome about it.

Bit of a theme with us signing people for a third time.

Good signing though, now for a goal keeper to replace Sail.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/129048426/jonathan-gould-returns-to-wellington-phoenix-for-third-stint-as-mens-goalkeeping-coach

“I also look forward to the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport facility that the club’s going to move out to and the fact the team will be back at Sky Stadium.

“It’s an exciting period for the football club and I am very grateful to [head coach] Ufuk Talay for providing me with this opportunity to return.”

Gould will return to the Phoenix fresh from having worked with the All Whites and OlyWhites over the past year, where he got to work with the two goalkeepers on the club’s books – Oli Sail, who could potentially be on the move to Europe before the next A-League season begins, and Alex Paulsen.

“I know all the goalkeepers at the Phoenix,” Gould said.

“I’ve obviously worked with Oli Sail, I’ve spent some time with Alex Paulsen and I know the two younger ones under him in Alby Kelly-Heald and Henry Gray.

“There’s talent there and the setup behind the first team is great.

“Head of academy goalkeeping Ruben Parker’s relatively new into the environment but he’s a wonderful development coach.”

Talay said Gould was another experienced set of eyes for him and his coaching staff.

“We’re very pleased he’s come on board.

“Gouldy is going to be great for us and the technical staff with all the experience he has.

“He’s been in the game for such a long time, probably even longer than I have, so it’s great to have him part of the group and share his experience with us.”

The Phoenix are set to start pre-season training in July, with the A-League Men season expected to commence in early October.

Just be wary of the grass surface at the new facility. I also would not be buying a house down Alexander Road near the base of the Wallaceville Hill roundabout.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Just saw this on Domey's LinkedIn. Great news for the club. Gilly has shown himself to be a terrific servant to the club. Quiet and competent. Glad he's been given this opportunity

Gothard back, please

Gothard did come across as a bit of a tool at times on the match day bench.  Getting into verbals with opposition benches, referees etc.

However, I believe we have seen evidence of his influence when not there

Filip Kurto was the best goalkeeper in the A league the year he played for us.  IMHO he has not shown the same form at either WU or McArthur.

Ollie Sail was in magnificent form last season.  Not so much this season although I do not believe having the armband is helping him.

Decline in both cases following removal from the guidance of Paul Gothard.  Again, IMHO not a coincidence.

I agree that having the captaincy appears to be hindering Sail's performances.

I agree. But currently lacking an alternative. Ball or Rufer when he comes back. But neither are locked on starters.

yeah, options for capt are slim.

Best of lucky to Gould.
Re Gothard, he's only just starting his career as a head coach, really don't think he's going to come back sadly.
Agree that he did wonderful work and that we're missing him

People saying Sail's form has dropped - how can you tell? I can only think of Adl's goal the death that Sail could have possibly done better, but he just had been whacked in the sack.

Peru error (also Payne’s fault), Costa Rica positioning, Australia Cup errors (also Payne/Laws’ fault), Adelaide goal, Cummings bicycle kick (ruled marginally offside), multiple shanked kicks, sometimes odd positioning.

Not a huge drop off of form but he’s gone from arguably the best keeper in the competition to being good for at least 1 or 2 notable errors a game.

if you watch him closely over the last few games his decision making has been heistant at best, last season he would make decision to come out and it was confident and decisive, a striker sees this and hesitates himself. This season Sail has almost second guessed his decision to come out and it's meant he's been left in "no man's land" and concedes.

I think maybe his confidence isn't as high going into this season with the All-Whites errors and not securing a move overseas he might've lost that 10% we've seen the last couple of seasons as a lot of goalkeepers talk about how a lot of it is mental.

https://www.oceaniafootball.com/wellington-phoenix-gm-learning-valuable-lessons-alongside-big-names-on-fifa-diploma/

Dome admits it may be a while before the impact of this course is felt. However, he has already utilised one lesson learned on the Diploma in the case of a potential transfer for one of the Phoenix’s star players.

Ben Waine, who scored his first goal for New Zealand on debut at the OFC FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers in Qatar in March, was the subject of a six-figure bid from English club Plymouth Argyle earlier this year.

While Dome admits that ‘Waino’ is destined to eventually play abroad he says the Phoenix will not be selling for “bargain basement prices” anymore after a realisation that came to him while on the Diploma.

“One of the things I learned is that traditionally European clubs under-price players from this part of the world,” said Dome.

“With Waino we have decided that if we sold him for six figures he is going to be worth a lot more than that in the future.

“At some point you have to take a stance and say our players are worth more than that and I got that from being on that course.

“It might not happen this year or next but I think Waino will go because he is good enough and we are not going to stand in his way. But it is about setting that precedent and not underselling ourselves.”

So who will be our next goal-keeping coach??

Regarding Sail - I think his form has dipped because he has tried to adapt and improve his game. Sail is a shot stopper, but the world, or at least Europe it seems at the moment is all about the ball-playing goal keeper. Wouldn't be surprised if this is a choice on his part. He wants to move, this will help!?
