I don't really like a lot of the suggestions such as secret seven, magnificent seven, sinister seven etc. Just "The Seven" sounds more ominous and dignified to me.

I think the fact that these seven investors plus the wellington city council wanted to come in proves that ultimately the club has been a success. A lot of people are passionate about it and it adds a lot to the city. It's had a benefit to NZ football as well, which were near bankrupt themselves and are now 10 million in the black. The fact that office space has become oversupplied in the last 3 years has nothing to do with the club.

By Council you mean Councillor Morrison? I think you'll find Council's line is they don't get involved using ratepayers money to prop up sports teams.

No, I mean the entire city council. The council were extremely keen to keep it in Wellington. They got involved to make sure that happened.

Oh, is that what you do?

Now, I'm sure you'll sing out that these comments were not to the effect that Serepisos' involvement in the Phoenix was to be sneered off.  I have the very same song sheet!  What was being suggested, up thread, was to judge Serepisos by his own standards.  I was taking that and running with it: (1) his main priority was to be admired, (2) that such admiration was hardly universal, but (3) that it would be easier to judge when the smoke cleared.  In the posts linked to, you've put forward all but the utterly pedestrian point (3).

One must ask, "what's changed?"  I realise that, after months of proclaiming that Serepisos would come through, to see his game come undone must come as something of a blow.  But it seems perverse to discard your earlier criticisms of the man after finding out that you'd over-estimated him!

As an aside, it's surprising (or perhaps not) that you've picked Tenzin Gyatso, a man who believes himself a god, as the model of humility.

Love your stuff and agree with your summation of Seripisos.
As for not kicking a man when he's down, well he's kicked more than a few people in his time.

I'm just going to put an official word in here.

A few posts have been removed from this thread, not because they weren't cheerleading Terry but more because they were covering areas that could have seen legal implications for us.

Also, posts have been removed in the Thanks Terry thread as that is not the place to debate the merits of Terry's efforts.

That is all.

Carry on.

On Terry - I haven't had personal dealings with him, but can appreciate that there are those who have grievances (and debts) with him who would paint a less than rosy picture of him. As a football fan & a Wellingtonian, I appreciate what he's done in creating the Phoenix.

Has he been successful? Financially, obviously not. In addition, I remember the Phoenix in 2007 were held up as an example of a well-run club. I'm not sure that's applied for some time now. Footballing wise, I'm not sure either. Yes, the Nix have made the playoffs 2 years running but it's been pretty grim viewing at times, as pages and pages of post-match angst will attest. Yet, the fact we're angsting is probably his biggest success. He's got people talking about football, wearing team merchandise, and attending matches. Even his downfall & bankruptcy wouldn't have made the paper if he hadn't founded the Nix.

As for now claiming he funded the Nix with other people's money, it does come across as kicking him when he's down. I'm not saying it's not true, but that viewpoint would have more crediblity had it been brought up in the first 3 seasons.

Here's a suggestion for our magnificent 7: Rather than struggle to fill a 35k stadium consistently why don't we build a football stadium (rectangular not oval) that would seat up to 20k?

That would create a better atmosphere and encourage more people to come on a regular basis.

Yes/no?

Interesting isn't it?  The comment from "Doug" on the TV3 website is a fair reflection of how i feel about that business.

I suppose he is not the tall poopy that Terry was so didn't receive the same shoddy treatment from the media (printed mostly).

I think it has more to do with the fact that farming is supposedly the lifeblood of NZ therefore anyone who is making or has made money from Agriculture is untouchable...

Another example is Fonterra!

Err, but primary industry is the mainstay of our export-dependent economy.  There's a really good talk by Sir Paul Callaghan about how we could change the economy to a more diverse one.  I think someone posted it in another thread months ago.

Therefore it makes them untouchable in the eyes of the people who govern. Don't bite the hand that feeds...

Anyway back on topic. If somebody owes the same amount of money as somebody else, who has been lopped by most of the media in this country, then it is only fair that other person who owes that money should receive the same treatment!

Won't happen though, unfortunately.

But Campbell has previously been keen to get stuck in to farming and fonterra.  Crafar isn't as sexy as Terry (in a news sensationalism way) I guess.

Anyhoo.  It's been a week on for the club under new ownership, apparently the players have a spring in their step (and some have plasters on their limbs), new signings due on Tuesday, Dunners and Dorkland announced as venues, season passes are arriving in the mail (mostly) and the sun is shining.

Are we having fun yet?
