In what way? What did you find embarassing?

Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

JD - you know I respect you and value you as a contributor to this forum. You are Ronnie Corbett to my Ronnie Barker, Howard Moon to my Vince Noir, but I just gotta ask what crazy prescription meds you are on at the moment (and do the side affects include the inability to see or hear any new information whatsoever that conflicts with your extremely rigid pre-conceptions?).

I thought that was a very good piece that, just like the piece in the paper last weekend, served to give a better insight into how the man works. Sure, I suspect you are right that somebody else could present a much smoother, more media-savvy face to the public but I'm actually really starting to warm up to Gareth's style. You certainly can't accuse him of being anything less than honest or prepared to engage (he has directly answered questions from you on his blog at least twice in the last month), and in the long-run that's probably more important to the fans than constantly being presented with carefully crafted PR spin.

To characterise that piece as "embarrassing" is very, very unfair IMO. In fact, I think every Phoenix fan should listen to that and get a bit more insight into someone who - big picture now - is trying to do right by this club (whether you agree with his methods or not).

I predict that in a year from now everybody will be much more in tune with the way Gareth works and if he were to make similar comments to the famous "pathetic and unsophisticated" ones again it will be met with no more than a knowing shrug and a "he he, crazy Gareth up to his old tricks". I also predict that in ten years we'll still be singing "Stand Up If You Love Your Cat" but it will be one of those quirky ones that no-one can quite remember why.

close top double sure, but in a stadium that is double the capacity (close too) and from population of 2 million compared to 450k? Welnix can't have made money on this trip....and if they did then Wellington council need to look at the hirage fee for the stadium  in welly.

Considering all the promotion leading up the game, it is a little dissapointing.

a little? I would have guessed that for Eden Park the break even point would be around 15k, (given 10k for RoF) 11k is sad, especially with the marketing, population, novelty etc

BUT what if Gareth wants you where playing attractive football and further up the table... what would the crowd have been then...

Welcome to www.wildguess.com!

11.5k was pretty within expectations I reckon, considering how the team is performing. I'm sure it will be more than enough to justify another trip up their next season.

I've really warmed to Eden Park as a football venue too. Sure it's a bit big, but so is the RoF, and at least Eden Park is the right shape. I also vastly prefer where the Zone is at Eden Park, the superior food offerings, and the less bothersome security.

That, and Fever Away Trips (TM) never fail to deliver.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

You forgot to mention bouncy castles there Smithy.

I agree, hard to draw any firm conclusions from the size of that crowd. It was low enough for the "travelling circus" haterz to say "told you so" but on the other hand as our second biggest crowd of the season probably just enough to justify doing again.

Impressive - probably not. Face of the club - also probably not. Embarrassing - also not.

Like others on here, I have a soft spot for Gareth. He's entertaining, and he provokes discussion. He is also more than prepared to put his money where his mouth is. That's three big ticks in my book. I'm certainly less embarrassed by Gareth's idiosyncrasies than I was by Terry's.

And for all the brouhaha that was stirred up with his "pathetic & unsophisticated" comments, it's actually become more of a meme than anything serious, and hasn't dented our attendance or people's enthusiasm for supporting the football club.

Having said that, I'd prefer Rob Morrison or someone a little more balanced and less inflammatory was the public face of the Phoenix.

Yip, Gareth has definitely given the chants a shot in the arm that was needed. Was getting a little boring there for a while so kudos to Gareth.

What gets me with this so called break even point at the ROF being 10k,if you look at the figures and apart from our 1st season when have we averaged that for the round robin games. If you take out the games held at AMI and Eden Park and the finals series games from most seasons averages then im pretty sure the figure isnt 10k so not sure why Welnix keep banging on about this magical figure its not as if we have ever reached it on a consistant basis.

The 10K figure actually has little to do with Welnix ( at least , I think that's true) . David Gray (Westpac Stadium's manager) told me a few years ago ( during Terry's reign)that 10K is what the Stadium needs to break even. The impression  he gave me  was this was in fact independent of code so similar  figures were relevant for egg-ball.

Okay but whenever you hear it talked about its nearly always made to sound that we used to average those sorts of figures. When in actual fact we have never reall been that close during the normal season.Yep we got the occasional game around those but certainly since our first season not on a regular basis.

It's not just this tweet that I drew conclusions from, there have been many tweets along the same lines, especially on the day that Gareth called us pathetic. It's been an ongoing theme in some of his tweets.

Also, I'm not sure where you got the idea that I'm not a fan of Gareth. I think you are drawing conclusions.

I havent seen any of Ifills tweets. So I took that in isolation,  fair enough,  altho I'm not sure why you are reposting it, isnt there some glee there ?

My conclusions have come from seeing your posts on here, if I am wrong and you are a fan (of Gareth), then I welcome your saying it loud and proud :-)

It's hard to put into words, but I'll try. I'm not a fan of the way Gareth gets his messages across sometimes, but I respect that he is ambitious and that all he is trying to do is make things better. His overall message is fairly positive (I think most of us agree on that), but the way he communicated it and implemented it could have been better. It also irks me that he has appointed himself as they spokesperson from the Phoenix and presents his opinion as the opinion of Welnix and the Phoenix, when in fact the people that should be speaking in public (Rob and Domey) have a completely different point of view. (I'm referring to him saying that him saying that it's okay if we don't make the playoffs, whereas Rob Morrison said that he's told Ricki we have to make the playoffs).
