that's the end of the a league for me. Why bother
Its not about Sky I reckon. Its more a philosophy now that it is an Australian comp and we don't fit being Kiwis. That has come about since the league is becoming more successful
Herald "It has been reported that the Phoenix ownership group - Welnix - will be unlikely to be interested in accepting the four-year extension, with the consortium having little desire in investing money for the short period of time. They showed little interest in accepting the previously offered five year licence, and wanted 10 years to set up a long-term sustainable model with stability.
Good! Show some balls, guys. Better to die on your feet than live bent over.

Hah, just got the email from the club and had to come check this thread to watch the brown trousers and the doom mongering. :D
But more seriously - FFA are obviously bullsharkting here, this Fairfax journo was given this leak by them deliberately to try to scare Welnix. What a bunch of tossers.
U joining us now?

Nope, I'm not joining any doom-mongering until I hear it straight from Domey. All those Fairfax reports mean is that those FFA sharkcods are playing hardball. I still believe they're playing hardball, and that Welnix can call their bluff.

If the Nix are actually binned then i agree. Absolutely no interest in watching the A-League without a NZ team in it.
Three for me, and two for them.
But Sky is so far up Thugby's arse that they would never really invest in football coverage. Look how they gave away the EPL. I somehow dont think Sky would man up and offer the sort of financial support that they pay for the basketball, netball, league and thugby.
Mr Positive
Not sure why your blaming sky sure they could have paid more but wasnt it the FFA who accepted it,dont think it was the Phoenix who said yes to the deal.Could be interesting can see them going back to their old NSL troubles which should prove good for the development of the game over there.Not.
GET YOUR SHIRTS OFF FOR THE BOYS
I saw the NSL troubles in the derby game the other day with WSW letting off their flares and of course, there is no punishment handed out that we know or hear of.
The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
Actually would prefer Welnix just come out and say sorry guys we tried but we are not prepared to continue in a competition that dosnt want us so we are not going to waste any more money. Then shut up shop today thats it all over would save Welnix and us fans a lot more heartache and money.
GET YOUR SHIRTS OFF FOR THE BOYS
I know it's been said a billion times before but the existence of the Nix does not take anything away from Australian football in general or the FFA or A League in particular. It's not like the existence of the Nix precludes the existence of another Australian club.
If anything, having financially stable committed owners means that FFA can be confident they won't have to step in and absorb losses when the owners stop paying the bills (see: Newcastle).
If this is a business decision, it's a fudgeing stupid one. More likely that it's a political one.
People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.
I can't help wondering where we'd be if NZ Football showed some support for the Phoenix too. If FFA think they're subsidising a development pathway for New Zealand footballers (and I think they're probably right), then the onus is on NZ Football to step up and do their bit.
I could be wrong. Maybe they've tried and failed...but I doubt it.
(I'm not saying the FFA are justified, I think most Aussie fans will agree this is terrible for the A-League. Fudge the FFA cods.)
Nothing to do with Sky. What do you want them to be shareholders in the Nix like they were with the Knights?
Mr Positive
Cant wait to see the banner on the 13th. Covicts beat Colonists. Football is a passionate game, The Nix have done well and even when Terry's issues arose, no one had to bail us out from the FFA - Unlike how many teams?? We are not costing them much are we?
The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
Unbelievable if true. One of the most well-managed clubs in the comp and they see the league as better off without us. The FFA will be really shooting themselves in the foot here if they force us out.
If another Sydney team come in, who's to say they won't be just another GCU or Fury - if there really was a committed, viable ownership group ready to step in, that team would already exist.
Add to that the Jets and the Roar who are in serious financial woes, and by no means assured of survival. Why, when so many teams (relative to size of the league) are not that far away from folding, do you want to get rid of one of your most stable clubs??
Add to that the flares and moronic behaviour of Wanderers fans, and the league could really become a marginalised NSL-style fringe sport again. And that's not good for anyone, including the FFA.

Hope this doesn't effect the teams performance.
We know the FFA like to negotiate through the press, so this is probably a tactic to put pressure on the nix as said above.
Really shark way to run a competition, the FFA treat the owners like crap, the fans like crap. You burn enough bridges... no wonder viewership and croud numbers are down this year.
And no expansion for the foreseeable future? What a joke.
I know its been said multiple times but the Phoenix don't rate any worse than CCM or the Jets, there are 500k expats in Australia so you'd think that some of them are signed up to fox to watch Phoenix games. Phoenix crouds may be small but we don't get any away traveling fans. Add an Auckland franchise you get more NZ exposure, higher ratings, and three derbys a year to increase attendance.
You'd be spot on about the expats. All of my family in Brisbane only get pay TV to watch the Nix. If we're gone, so is 4 pay TV packages, money the A League is so dependant on.

Plus, what message does this send to potential investors in other clubs? "We expect you to stump up heaps of cash but we'll pull the rug from under you whenever we feel like it" - yeah, that will help them get good owners in

Don't think it's a lot to do with the money, unless we were making huge amounts.
There has been a significant amount of Aussies that don't want to share the league with a kiwi team. Most committed fans support us, but the anti-football brigade don't.
Hell our own media did f*ck all to support us.

Ernie specifically referred to watchers at the game and on TV at home post match..I think he knew and was giving a message to Sky.
Players just playing for one season of glory now..I don't think Welnix will accept 4. Why should they.
A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen
If you were the Welnix guys would you want to put more money into something thats not likely to be there at end of it. I hope they just say to the FFA here have your licence back we are not subsidizing you guys for another 5 years. Yes i would hate it but i see no reason why they should be expected to throwing money away.

While being too lazy to address all the points made in their statement, surely we've contributed to Aussie football development enough, at least a fair share? Nathan Burns being an extreme example. Also had a squiz at a couple of forums of other clubs and they seem to want us to stay anyway.
I would have thought having a stable, well run club like the 'Nix would only be good for the stability of the league as a whole.

That's not actually true. There is a very vocal minority who don't. The majority are fine with it.
Only 4 years? Pretty clear the FFA don't want the Nix long term and are just hoping Wellnix says F.U. ,
which they should do as it's ridiculous to expect investors to operate on such a sort term 4 year outlook when the rest of the competition gets given far more
F.U. then the FFA says "well they pulled the plug" and move on
Sure looks like curtains for the mighty Phoenix

FFA has carefully evaluated the role and contribution of the Wellington franchise in terms of game development, player pathway, commercial factors, broadcast rights and the long-term strategic outlook,” said Gallop.
“The application for a 10-year extension to the licence does not meet the requirements we see as fundamental to the future growth of the Hyundai A-League.”
I notice it does not say we cant re-apply for another extention after 2019/20.

Not the majority on the board, which is where it counts, dammit

Of course we could but why do you invest in a 10 year plan if it can be culled on a whim by the business incompetence of the FFA.
That release is just a stinking pile of bullshark. The Phoenix bring more viewers in Aus than two of the clubs they have propped up in the last 12 months.
Westfield and Harvey Norman two brands I do fund and will now not
I'm furious about this decision from the FFA just as much as everyone here. It isn't fair no wonder we hate aussies so much - Sporting issues that is.
Hell our own media did f*ck all to support us.

I refer you to my comments about the first ten mins of tonights news on TV1 being only about rugby and the first ten mins of the sport news on TV1 also being about rugby and yet the U17's scored about 25 seconds for their wonderful achievement. Thanks a fudgeen lot New Zealand media.
The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
I'm still a little bit in shock right now
But this is so crappy. So so so crappy.
The FFA are ridiculous to kick us out. Aside from the horror of losing my team my head is screaming that we should give them the big F*CK YOU on the 4 year extension and desert this shambles of a league.
Someone convince Welnix to invest in the ASB premiership...
