Why do we have Downey and Pav on the books for next year??? seriously!

Downey I somewhat understand, given that he was only signed a year ago. I'm fine with giving young players a two year deal, given that if they really do have the goods they might still take a while to develop, and that we wouldn't want to see them blossom and then have them slip away in search of better training facilities. This is making the enormous presumption that our young players actually have potential, but I think the point still stands.

Pav, on the other hand, is beyond explanation. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure he was originally signed on a one or two year deal, and has since been offered an extension. Lunacy.

Yeah he was extended two years I believe. Gah what a ridiculous call. Especially as he isnt youth. I thought he may have had some potential, but there has to be better younger players

In an article about Brockie, the Newcastle Herald is reporting that the visa players will stay at 5 for next season. He also needs another year to qualify for an Aussie passport.

http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/sport/football-soccer/jeremy-brockie-sells-scoring-skills-on-internet/2506982.aspx

Since we are staying at 5, we can keep Smith and Greenacre whilst still looking for a Striker now.

Read somewhere Ricki is trying to keep Smith, but I prefer to have Greenacre on coaching. 2 new players next year !!

I'm not sure of the timing but didn't Pav get into the Olyroos squad at some stage?  Maybe Ricki re-signed him on the basis that he must be good if he made that initial squad.

Either way, we need to find our own Chianase or Ibini.

We just need Rojas #2

It's pretty disheartening seeing basically every other club have at least semi decent young players playing and we've got nothing. Understand the limitations of not having a youth team - but that is what people like to see. valeo2012-03-31 22:37:29

"It's why Wellington coach Ricki Herbert will go on a shopping excursion to England and South America at the end of April. The club are close to re-signing both Vince Lia and Alex Smith but neither are in Brown's mould, forcing them to look outside.

"We will look for a different type of player, because if we retain Vince Lia and Alex Smith, then we could probably look to play differently," Herbert said. "[I will look for] a creative midfielder, a striker who has pace and plays at the top and I'm quite keen to inject some youth."

2 imports? Either Sanchez or Greenacre are gone then, assuming the reports of the visa spots staying at 5 are correct.

umm, Sanchez anyone? I know he's been crap for a while but he's also been playing wing. When he was involved centrally on Friday I thought he looked like he could be quality again

We've got a seasoned squad of professionals at the club at the moment and have largely benefited from that, being the only club in the A-League to make the last three Finals Series.

But it's no secret that the roster needs a slight overhaul.

When I think of a creative midfielder for the Nix I think of players of the calibre of Broich, Carle and Fred.

Whilst I think Sanchez has been somewhat short changed in terms of not having had a decent opportunity to show what he can do playing centrally I've seen enough to form the view he is no where near the same calibre as the top creative midfielders in the league.

If we are really aspiring to match it, over a season, with the likes of the Roar and Mariners then, as harsh as it is, Sanchez is simply not good enough.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Sounds great to me!

Cameron Lindsay to play a more regular role next season.
Louis Fenton off the bench.
I wouldn't mind us looking at Ian Hogg to replace Niko Tstats

Yea, Ian Hogg could be worth a shot I was thinking on Fri.

Has he ever trialled with us?

You'd imagine RH would know enough of him to make a call. I'd assume he has at some stage (or atleast trained)

Well ricki keeps saying we need an attacking midfielder, yet we have one and he won't play a formation that caters to him. Maybe if we played something like a 4231

First team Would look like this
Those in brackets are questionable

(Muscat)------Durante-----Siggy-----Loch
-----------(Lia)--------Smith----------
---Ifill--------(Sanchez)---(Pantelis)
------------------New ST---------------

I'm unsure whether to have Muscat as a RB or DM, he likes to attack and seems to do it more often at RB then Dm, but i'm unconvinced about Lia being there instead sometimes he has really good long passes almost exclusively all switches though and other times like last friday against sydney he just kicks the ball away trying to switches. I have seen Smith do some very good, intelligent long passes that aren't switches and he is usually very good with the defensive duties and build up play. Lindsay as reserve.

Then Have Ifill left or right Am and have him interchange with the new striker.
Sanchez or New Am in the middle
And then any of Pantelis, bertos, greenie and ward if they stay in the last position.
And then The new quick striker who has a good touch and shot

Or even a 41212 (Ala A.C Milan)
With Ifill and new striker up front
Sanchez or newbie as the Am

Sanchez played a lot of this season as the attacking midfielder sitting behind Greenie, generally did well enough but isn't the creative focal point the team needs in there if we are to play that 4231 that Ricki likes, he is neat and tidy and can pass a ball but just lacks that bit of extra that we need to step it up a level next year.

Great that he's going away to Engerland and South America. Wonder who he is taking.

"The 24-year-old Kiwi international is one of nine Jets off contract and rejected an initial deal to stay in Newcastle."
From Newcastle Herald.

Who are these Jets? Anyone worth having as a squad player?
Brockie would be good as a utility. Could play him on the wing or striker, as a sub or in case of injury.

He needs to stay in Aussie for another year, before he gets his passport. For his sake, he should stay in Aussie until he gets it.

I believe these are them:
Mario Simic, Tarek Elrich, Sung Hwan Byun, Labinot Haliti, keeper Matthew Nash, Ali Abbas and skipper Ryan Griffiths, Francis Jeffers, Jeremy Brockie.

Neither is complete, put the two together.
I think Byun is signed with Sydney or is rumored...

I'm sure he will be regardless.
He's steadily gotten better, I remember when he took every opportunity to sky a shot from long range. Since he's been threading passes, pulling switches.
He's a good DM, can play RB in times of dire need.
Him and Smith be a great DM combo methinks.

Yip Lia is versatile and would keep him. He's passionate - he will be kept.

Byun going back to Sydney is stupid.

Obviously would take Brockie but think he should stay in Aus - Could CCM use him, or is he not enough of a pure goalscorer like they need?

Agreed, he'll be resigned and its not a bad thing. Can't see him being on big coin either.

Thanks. I know we covered this many pages ago, but I'd take Elrich if he wasn't too pricey, Brockie I don't think will come over and the rest - meh.

Agreed, although he probably should stay in aussie if he can to get citizenship.
However there'd be no harm in putting an offer on the table.
Let him know "look there's place here if you want it."
If he finds something else then so be it, but why not?

There must be temptation to hold out until the next chinese transfer window opens up and see what happens. It is rumoured that he turned down (or hasn't accepted yet) a ~$133,000 offer from Newcastle. I really don't think he is worth that. He missed out on a lucrative Chinese offer, but he will have to be careful or he could end up having to settle for something significantly smaller.

I thought he gets citizenship this year?

Anyway, I'd be happy to take Jeremy Brockie!

I wonder where Nick Ward will go? Good squad player, but squad players are the ones we need to be replacing with starting calibre players

LOL....we need a creative midfielder!!!!

We DON"T need a creative midfielder because we do not play that style of football. Absolutely pointless IMO. Ricki is not going to suddenly change his style in year 6. We need to look at how we play and select the best players to implement that style. Forget wet dreams of creative midfielders.

We need a proper classy specialist RB. That allows Manny to play centrally. He said its his prefered position and he was great there in the the 09/10 playoffs

We need a striker who can bang in 10 to 15 goals a season. Serge VD please!

We need some pace out wide. Someone who can get in behind defenses. A quick skillfull winger and maybe some pacey LB/RB

My team for next season

                  Moss
RB(new)  Siggy  Dura   Locky

           Muscat  Smith

RW(new)                       Pantellis

        Iffy     Striker(new)

I was of the same thinking that we dont need an attacking midfielder as RH isnt gonna play him anyway.

But I think he would if he got his man. He was never overly satisfied with Sanchez imo, didnt sign him up as soon as he could, and probably felt it was the best he could get at the time.

I think if Ricki signs the player he wants, he will play the team around the guy. He fits in his best players into whatever formation he can - but he doesnt class Sanchez as one of his best

If I was Ricki I would be watching pretty closely how this works out. It's a gamble for Brockie turning down an offer from Newcastle, and there's a chance that if doesn't manage to get a gig elsewhere in Asia, he may have left it too late to push for an import spot in an A-league team. In which case, the Phoenix might be his best/only option.

That said, good luck to him trying to break into Asia. Can only be good for NZ football, etc etc.
