Phoenix Transfer Speculation 2012/13

It is what it is PWF.

I am interested to see how Leo goes in the pre season games at RB, I think he might do ok actually. Prefer him with his experience on the park to Downey with virtually zip.

Also I am very keen to see Manny in his preferred position, I have liked what we saw of his skills going forward when he got up there last season.

Yeah I agree with everyone here, but it seems odd that we will be playing Leo (a winger) at RB, and Downey (a RB) on the wing.

I prefer Leo as well - but would love to see Downey actually given a shot rather than being tossed out because of reputation

And from what ricki sees of him week in week out.

I think calling Downey soley a RB is pushing it a bit far. He has probably been able to get game time there as his physical ability lends himself to playing there, fast and good stamina. However I don't think he has anything else in his arsenal that stands out as a defender. He is basically a right sided player.

Do remember him at Perth, he was so quick - I don't think I have seen someone relatively so quick compared to others on the pitch. However it seems injuries have brought him closer to the pack.

I understand that - but I mean everyone else on here who has decided he is a completely rubbish RB. I know I am one of those people. But I only think he is rubbish based on reputation and how convincing others on here are.

I havn't seen him play RB for more than a couple of games and I doubt many on here have - so I am just trying to make a point that everyone's assumption (including mine) that he is rubbish, isn't based on seeing him play at RB

20+ posts re: Manny, Downey, other players at RB.....

....I thought we'd actually signed someone.

Wasn't this meant to be the Transfer Speculation thread?

I guess it would be useful to give this whole RB or CF thing its own thread I reckon.

10 days and I bet you it would have 200+ replies!

Two guesses who we are gonna sign?

The problem with Downey is that he runs entirely in straight lines.

To steal a phrase from the Guardian about Jamie Mackie: he's like a guy doing lengths up and down the side of the pool while a game of waterpolo is going on.  That's Downey

Another signing you can explain away all you like, but god it was terrible.  As others have said, a 2 year deal, just why??

Transfer window in Europe closes today so you think we'd know soon enough whether our supposed targets are available.  Anyone think our striker links are just a ruse by the club to keep us plebs happy??

Nah,because that would backfire big time when we don't sign one. It's created more angst than happiness, they were better off not saying anything at all.

Siggy will be just a boy compared to some of the guys del Piero would have come up against in the Series A.

Sounds to me like he's considering the offer and will meet with Sydney officials in Italy to discuss it.

I dont think that Leo has looked impressive at either RB, winger, sub or anything for quite some time now and I think that only reason he is being considered as RB is because he is struggling to cut it as a winger these days

Sounds to me like he's given them a verbal agreement but nothing is obviously signed yet. Tony P isn't completely retarded and announcing it prematurely if its not gonna happen

If we don't sign this new gun striker it is going to raise some interesting questions Last year with Terry going under during the off season and a hand over at the last minute we had a minimal playing staff and likely a wage bill well below the salary cap This year we have shed some very high earners in greenacre, brown and Daniel and replaced them with totori, brockie and moss which in combination would give gareth a tidy surplus We are still running a minimal playing roster so is gareth the new Scrooge?

Yes.  They are trying to run it as a business.

which is a smart move as longa s they are not too cheap and end up losing good players whcih atb the end of the day you need to win championships. It's a fine balancing act keeping the spend low but keepoing fans happy and coming back to fill the stadium - to do this you need to be winning. So far I'm pretty happy with the way theya re doing things.

The owners have consistently said that the full cap is available but they will not be forking out for a marquee. Gareth's a straight shooter so I have no doubt that the $s are available to fund a proven striker, up to the cap. What's missing is the capability to successfully conclude deals in a competitive recruitment market. That left with Tony P. Our owners are proven deal makers but it looks like they have placed unjustified faith in Herbert and Dome's ability and have been too hands off. A $ to a pinch of sheep shit we are a week or so away from an announcement that Herbert is happy with our striker stocks and we're keeping the last import spot in reserve - or some such bollocks. I'd love to be proven wrong.

I totally agree WB, the signing of Boyd and an announcement similar wouldn't surprise me.

Now the transfer window is closed - surely players would now be looking at sorting out their futures.
Can someone please get a serious answer from Ricki as to whether we have a striker on the way???

Spot on assessment there Whitby. Agreed on all fronts.

Fair point, but running the first team squad leaner then Terry did as he faced bankruptcy and only driving a car wortth less then 5k should make us concerned about their business

Yeah I think the only additions will be Fenton and Boyd.  I really wish Tony P was still here.  Look who he's just picked up for Sydney (Del Piero).

Still keeping my eye on "Robert Earnshaw"

Didn`t even make the Cardiff squad for the game against Wolves in the weekend.

Must be getting frustrated !!

In regards to Earnshaw or other strikers who are still contracted to clubs - can we still loan players now the window is closed? Becasue as far as I am aware- now we can only sign players on a free because the window is closed - so clubs would have to release the player for us to sign him?

As I understand it it depends on the window you are going too. The A-League window doesn`t close until the beginning of the season.

Also I think in England the loan window opens up about two weeks after the Transfer window closes

May stand corrected tough

Yeah I think the loan window is slightly different to the transfer window. Not sure exactly how,so this is a rather pointless and unhelpful post!

I would be happy if we just promoted Fenton and Boyd. Enough goals in Brockie, Ifill and Totori.

Don`t know, but has Totori been a bit quiet ??   Not much rave about him in pre-season reports

I would be even happier if we signed them and a new striker. Or even a real RB

I was personally expecting Totori to be banging some goals in so pretty surprised he hasn't yet

I also expect Sanchez to get a few goals. If we do sign Boyd and Fenton, along with Pav, we have a lot of players available in the attacking third.

I don't agree. Totori is unknown at this level, Brockie could have a Sydney FCesque year and Ifill could get injured.  That leaves us without Greenacres contribution and already down Brown's.

It could work out (I hope they all tear up and score a dozen each) but I believe it is too big a punt on unknowns.  Plus the signing of a player who can be a talismanic goalscorer helps us focus and market, particularly if it's a name or a name with associations we can sell.
