On the Totori front, I'm ok with him being in the team even though he is not a starter usually. I base this on the fact that I think its reasonably important for us to support Oceanic talent. In fact I'd be happy if we used 1 import spot a year for that purpose. I don't think the reason we're going so poorly is just because Totori is in the team instead of a better import, there's more of an argument that Smith shouldn't be there I think.

Good point, I think there is a certain obligation to help Oceania football develop. The question then is - is Totori the best Oceania player available to the Nix? David Browne at ACFC is Papuan and is a real star in the making.

But is David Browne really a star in the making? We've seen Gagame Feni absolutely tear up at school boy level, do well for Canterbury then never get a look in at Waitakere. Same thing has happened with a lot of young island players. They're amazing when they're young but just don't push on.

Don't give a rats arse about supporting Oceania....we are not a charity. Let FIFA help them out.
Keat cut from LA Galaxy
Yes please sign him for the Nix.
And before anyone says....he was pants for the AW's answer this question. Would any of our current Nix midfielders have ever have got picked  up by the Galaxy and stayed there for two seasons and been thought good enough to start against Real Madrid?
Keat is a good player who is unlucky to be taking up a foreigners slot at LA.
Definitely good enough to make a mark in the A-League

Agree that Dan Keat should be signed, purely because we need a midfielder who isn't Lia and Smith. Our options are only Kiwis and Aussies and he seems like the best fit, considering the timing of his release.

What if we had a team similar to this.. would require two new, but realistic signings, and Hogg finally being match fit.

                Moss

Muscat Boxall Durante Hogg

            Keat McKain

              Sanchez

         Ifill Brockie Stein

Would Keat want to come here now though after last night's performance? And isn't Ricki against signing ginger kiwi mids for the Nix?

I would agree BUT, do you have any faith in Welnix shelling out for THREE players better than our current imports.  I don't, therefore I think he has to stay, and hope that they pay for two imports that will do the job.

McKain was awful in the midfield for us, and from memory hasn't been flash for Adelaide for two seasons.  Muscat was as brilliant, if not more for us at DCM than at RB, so what makes you think that his awful form will change just by shifting him to right back?

I would also add, being at the salary cap (and that has never ever been raised ever around here) how is Keat going to be signed?

So we dont want to be charitable to Oceania but are perfectly happy to be charitable to kiwi players who really havnt shown that they may be able to step up either.

Oh yes it has, when you look at what has been assembled to take us to that level you have to question who was doing the negotiations.

McKain was better than Siggy at CB, bring him back for that position. Siggy can warm the bench instead.

You are only talking two signings there.  With Downey, Pantelis, Smith to all go for sure (please God) and room to release  some/most of Leo (for Manny), Sanchez (maybe keep as squad player), Totori (Fenton, Boyd don't tie up an import spot), Paston (cheaper cover once Moss fit) and Lochead (presuming Hogg shows he is a better option) I think that sort of starting 11 is a definite possibility for next year.  I'd still like Ifill to give that trequartista/CAM role a shot.
That still leaves Lia on his last year of contract in the squad as DM/RB cover, Sigg covers CB, and the kids.  LB a bit thin as always if we let Lochead go.

Aren't we allowed to move Ifill to marquee nominally? Thus freeing up more space than we have. Then bring Keat in. This would mean that Keat would effectively be the marquee because we would only be exceeding the salary cap by approximately whatever we are paying him. I know the owners don't like marquees but this is really more like freeing up an extra 100k or so to bring in a not expensive player to fill dire holes.

that would take savvy that I don't think the owners have. Love to be proven wrong.

I think I have raised this before. A marquee player doesn't have to mean spending an extra 500k-1mil. Just use it to circumvent the salary cap.

Can do the same thing with the Aussie on the highest salary (probably Dura).

Interesting (and timely) quote in the paper today by Andre Lemanis, talking about how the Breakers turned around their crap away form. "It started with recruiting winners".

It's the only way. Open the wallet or we ain't going forward.

Ooops I accidentally posted under this account.

Hmm and cut my comment but cannot paste. Sigh.

Anyway it went something like: We would be foolish not to jump at the opportunity to sign Keat as he would at least provide some competition for midfield spots and can't be worse than Smith/Lia currently. In the future he could prove to be part of midfield solution relegating Lia to the bench/squad.

Re my previous comments on salary cap we would only have to nominate a marquee for the rest of the season being, reallocating Keat/marquee under the cap after releasing player at seasons end.

the marquee question is interesting, if we nominated say Dura as our aussie marquee and Stein as the international marquee then we have two spots to bring in a couple of players under the cap right? why are our astute businessmen owners not thinking along these lines.

No.

We must have a minimum 20 players but can have as many as we like (I think) so in terms of 'spots' that is not true. What does happen is their salary is effectively removed from the cap and frees cap space. With that we can sign as many players as we like. Be it 1, 2 or 3 provided the combined salary is does not put us over the cap. Considering we are at the cap, it could not be more than what Durante and Stein earned combined (pro rata for games left). I also don't think Durant qualifies for the Australian marquee. Someone else mentioned that they had to be an Australian international within the last year or 2?? Shady on that detail, I am.

We can't have as many as we like.  Maximum 23.  Also suspect we could move an All White into the 'Aus' marquee spot.

Oh ok. Well we could effectively sign 1, 2, or 3 players for what a high paid AW in our team and Stein makes.

Do you have to nominate your highest payed player as marquee? Because if what I thought was correct in that the FFA pay a significant portion of player wages by paying part of the cap (true/false?) or something then the owners may want to pay as little as possible and thus free up the minimum salary space to buy anyone can help retrieve something from this season like Keat. A good deal to be had there hopefully I pray our frugal owners will not resist.

If the FFA actually funded it, I suspect we would have used it.
