Plenty of footballers have looked good for a couple of games and then looked ordinary for ever after, and a good player would still show something even if out of position. Therefore not worried either way about Sanchez.

hard to judge sanchez harshly for what he has done for us this season - he was playing out of position for most of it. I'll be unhappy if he does go, I reckon he'll be quality if he got regular games in the centre of the midfield

It has always interested me the "playing out of position" opinion. Attaacking CM not really that far removed from a widish midfield player. (Sanchez actually did spend more time centrally than say either a Bertos or Daniel during the course of a match). He always showed some good touches and some shockers too but for me tended to drift in and out of a game too much. He is not a player the quality of Carle, Broich,  Hernandez etc, and in my view while he was okay for us, was never going to be the panacea  of an attacking creative midfielder. Nice bloke and all but if he goes, cet la vie.

Ask any Old Bling/Tards fan if they could change something about Carle/Carlos. It'd be exactly what you said of Emilio... ie "drifts in and out of games, mostly out". Less so Broich and thats why he's the best player in the league at the moment (when fit).

It's the nature of the beast, if they didn't they would be playing in a higher league than ours.

agreed, naturally Sanchez played more centrally than Daniel or Bertos - they are both wingers, and that's how Ricki used them, Sanchez came to us as a CAM?Striker, he started only a few times in the central role, the times he was most effective for us was when he came into the centre and got a chance to play the ball.

I think we all agree he played his best football when played centrally.

But why didnt Ricki play him there? There were chances for him to do so, but he chose not to.

Will he suddenly revert him back to central next season? Maybe with the departure of Brown? Also interesting to see him get subbed every game (well almost). What does that mean? Who knows?

Expect Muscat to be in midfield next season.
You heard something or expecting Downey to turn into a footballer over the break?

Warner came out here because of Ifill, maybe he could put in a word with Steven Reid to put off the retirement and come out here. Better CM than RB when he was at Rovers tho.

I tend to agree. If we aren't going to have a CAM then it looks like a 4-4-2 with two DMs, 2 wings.
The most obvious improvement we could make with a foreign player would be a skilled RB who can bomb down wings. Allowing Muscat into DM, pushing Lia to the bench.
DM combo of Smith and Muscat would be great as well as providing a lot going forward.

Where else would you deploy a Foreign player?
Surely the final spot is either for a RB or CAM?

The only other option might be a left wing, but I don't think that should be necessary so long as Pantelis can recover well.

i think I heard it right this morning a comment on ZB sport from Ricki that they were in negotiation with several players and I'm sure Sanchez was mentioned.

Piney might know he was on this morning.

can someone please say to Manny that he is a damn fine right back and should play there...

not great for Lindsay.

But he needs to stay RB unless we can sign someone

Yeah, it'll be Manny in midfield and a new right fullback.

He is a damn fine right back, but he's a dominant defensive mid.
I share your concern though, any right back replacing him must be as good if not better.
I think we can trust Ricki with this, he played as a defender, he's a defensive minded coach. He knows about defensive players and I'm sure he'll come up with the goods.
He was able to pick Muscat out of VPL obscurity, I'm sure he can find a more than adequate right back.

History says otherwise, we have struggled to find a good right back since day one.

According to Yellow Fever Twitter we are about to sign someone from Perth

Edit: oh probably just the GK coach.

I hope it isn't Andrezhino..

Don't want him.
Doesn't defend, only has a left foot.

There seems to be a lot of quality Solomon Islanders in New Zealand, especially at a young age. Gagame Feni, for example, completely dominates against players his own age, but they never seem to push on higher than ASB Premiership players. Is it the coaching, or is their game-plan just suited against younger inexperienced defenders?

Ricki mentioned last night we have a RB lined up and an attacking player in our sights.

He is heading to UK in next couple of weeks, and hopes you get a player 'over the line', and one of the two above is from the A-league.

It's good to see this is starting earlier than it did last season. Do you know which is from the a-league and which is from the uk? Or anything else?

Attacking player = Brockie? The RB will have to be an import, there isn't a RB in the A-League available that is better than Manny.

The attacking player will definitely be Brockie.

Wonder if they would look at Elrich at right back? Not the greatest, but a solid A-league level player with attacking abilities which Ricki wants from his fullbacks

I concur.
Please not Elrich. In no way comparable to Muscat.
Lia in midfield>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Elrich at RB.

I really like Elrich and he's a specialist in that position which helps

Capable at the back, has moments of class going forward. Bettr than anything we have now (bar Manny)

My suggestion of Elrich was purely based on the fact he is available and capable.

I personally would take him, however not sure if he is better than manny at RB.

I have a suspicion that when Manny re-signed then perhaps he was given the understanding that he will have another shot in his favoured midfield role...

If manny is midfield, and we continue to play two strikers up front then we are only gonna have 2 central midfielders on the pitch at one time, and I dont think its worth resigning Sanchez and Smith as well as having Lia, Manny & Lindsay.

I feel whether Brockie comes or not depends heavily on whether he is still wanted in China. Transfer window there opens in May?

Tarek Elrich has been great every other season, this year he looked a bit average. Seems to have lost a bit of pace which was such an important part of his game. Did Bojic get re-signed in the end? He was unhappy with his first offer I recall, I would take him.rjmiller2012-04-26 08:12:43
