Gareth commented on Close-up last night that we need to live within the salary cap.
 
By definition all teams need to live within the salary cap but I interpret what he said to mean that our total salary bill will be within the salary cap i.e. there will be no expenditure above the cap i.e. there will be no marquee(s). He made reference again to the money spent on Kewell and Emmerton as being examples of wasted (my word not his) expenditure.
 
This is quite consistent with what he has said in the past. I guess we'd all like a big name signing but most will appreciate the desire to get the club on a sound financial footing.
 
It does put increased pressure on Herbert to spend more wisely than perhaps he had to in Terry's day and to also be very smart about how he uses the next seasons reduced number of import spots.

The reduced number of imports has not been confirmed yet as far as I am aware. An article I read the other day claimed it's being discussed at the moment. It also may change to 4 + 1 asian qualified player.

The commentators for the game on the weekend said that if Lia wants to play for the all whites then he will have to request fifa give him a dispensation to play once he haqs gotten the dual citizenship that is.  I hope that this happens and they can come to an agreement.  I reckon he would be a good squad player for you guys.

I am sorry, but where are you getting your information from?

Neither of these players have played an official junior game with Nigeria. If they played an international friendly junior game, that wouldn't have impacted on their ability to make the switch. But Lia is not in this situation.el grapadura2012-01-31 17:40:50

Didn't Fallon play u19 for England, and tommy smith too, and did mcglinchey play age group for scots?

As far I as understand it, Fallon and WeeMac were NZ-born so were still eligble for NZ at the time they played for their respective age-grade teams. Smith gained citizenship whilst over here too.

Must admit I haven't paid much attention to his form at GCU but was impressed with him in our recent game against GCU.
 
Maybe his expectations ($s) and our ability (willingness ?) to pay are a bit more aligned than they were.

For a talented player he often seems highly unmotivated - I don't care how good you are, you have to fit into a team too - doesn't feel like he would.

Don't be surprised to see Smith come back. He's productive for what he brings. Imports don't all have to be stars. We've got a decent mix - a key man, some flair and a couple of real hard-workers.

Re Maceo- we wanted him but didn't get him..have done well without him.... but as others say would he have fit in, and have had the commitment of the rest of the nix players?Your choice Maceo, funny how it all worked out..

I agree actually. A hard working team-focussed player like Greeny and perhaps Smith would seem to fit in much better in Wellington than an inconsistent, individual, potentially selfish player like Rigters. I reckon we could even make Tevez look like sh*t haha.
