Didn't realise this: just read that the FFA are paying each club the entire salary cap the coming season, after previously subsidising  $1.9 million of the cap with the clubs paying the remaining $700,000.

The FFA sold the TV rights for the A-League last November to Fox (live rights) and SBS (delayed free-to-air rights) for  $ A 40 million / year over the next four years, starting next Monday, July 1st. This is double the previous TV deal. All A-League clubs, including the Nix are in for a hand-out of A$ 2.6 million per season, covering the entire salary cap.:

http://sportsbusinessinsider.com.au/international-news/ffa-doubles-up-with-new-broadcast-deal/

Frank Lowey: “We have to be prudent about it,” he added to the FFA’s official website. “The first thing we’re going to do is increase the subsidy to the clubs to the tune of $2.5 million, $2.6 million, to cover the salary cap. It was always my objective to do that, from day one. It took a few years to get there, but we are there. It’s very important. The clubs are playing a major part in the game. I without a good national competition there is no football. That’s what happened. Now we have a good competition, and the football is moving forward, but I think it will take another two or three years to really achieve our position where we should be.”

So, sweet financial times ahead for the Phoenix!!! Money in the bank...

Can we have some overflow on the salary cap then? Little bit of marquee on the side...?

Roux to CCM would be a great move for him and the All Whites.

Tuiloma looks the better player anyhow.

Roux looked good in the U20s WC game against Uruguay. Certainly worth a trial at the Nix. If he goes to CCM then its our loss IMO. There are strong rumours that Tuiloma is being lined up by other clubs as well so we might miss out on him as well. Considering that Ernie has said that Manny is a DM then currently it looks like we have Hogg and Rowe scrapping over LB and ??????lined up for RB
I know Ernie has only been in the job for a couple of weeks but our roster is really thin. We have 2 imports to come. I'm very interested to see how we are going to fill up the rest of the squad from kiwis and Aussies.....especially if we miss out on Tuiloma and Roux. OK people are going to say that these two are unproven and the U20's is a crap competeition......but how about naming some alternative players because it looks like lean pickings from NZ the Oz scene has been well sifted through by other clubs already.

he was never going to stay with us, and now we get to boooo him every time he touches the ball when he plays in Wellington.  That is a win in my book (I love the pantomine of booing someone everytime they touch the ball)

I remember doing it to Leo in season 1 - feel a bit guilty about that

Was he that great for us?  He was energetic - but I didn't see him do an awful lot that made him stand out

well being hungry and energetic made him stand out to me. He was willing to pull the trigger, and I just thought the enthusiasm he brought gave us something.

Sydney fans on 442 seem very happy with the signing.

Considering his age I think he is a very decent A-League player.

Aussie fans have massive wraps on him. I thought he brought a lot of energy, something we missed without Greenacre. I would have taken him but didn't see enough to be disappointed that we missed out.

Yeah I just didn't see where we would be going to play him.  Waffles (who I rate), Hernandez and Ifil have the attacking spots sewn up.  He's not a wide player - so I wasn't a hundred per cent what his role would be

I'm not too bothered on missing out on him. If he doesn't wanna be here then I don't want him. Plus is he any better than what we've got or what we're getting attacking wise? I don't think so. Maybe coming off the bench he would've made a good impact but otherwise good riddance. Bring on the Boos.

Took me a long time to warm to Stein but he was really showing his class by the end. Assuming he can stay fit I think he will be very important for us this season.

I'm going to interpret the -->> as an arrow, and read that you are calling Gamiero a Big Bald Belgium Bumbler. It's more accurate than the other interpretation...

Gamiero 7 games, 1 goal. 0.143 goals per game.
Huysegems 22 games, 5 goals. 0.227 goals per game.

You would expect anyone who has had a preseason to work with the team, plus a whole season to fit in to have a better scoring record, and as you saw the Belgian Bumbler was better at the end of the season than the start, Gameiro came in at the end, played very few games without a chance to see how the team plays and fit in, and barely played in his actual position of striker.

Waffles wasn't helped by the fact we kept aiming for his head 99% of the time. He is pretty hopeless in the air but fantastic with the ball at his feet, kinda what you would expect from a wide striker from the Dutch leagues.

Wow! With Lochy and Pasty gone, what money would have gone on Huysegems to be the new scapegoat?

Also, the return of the old chestnut: "Everyone the Phoenix signs sucks, because everyone who doesn't sign with the Phoenix rules."

I doubt he would come. I imagine he would stick around in England for several more years... Hull City are rumoured to be about to pick him up on a free transfer so he's probably got a bit more time in the premier league if he's lucky and a few championship clubs would be keen to snatch him up after this. Maybe if he was 35-36 he would consider it. I think he's on about $25,000-40,000 pounds a week at West Ham too. Not sure the nix owners would pay 2 mill Nz for a single player unfortunately.

With due respect, can I suggest watching it while not drunk because thast the only way you ever ever ever EVER get Gameiro as being better than Stein. Or you are doing a handstand watching it and think he is a defender...

That's really harsh there JV. It might not be a popular opinion but he is allowed to have it.

No I can definitely be worse. Ordinarily I agree with you, but his statement is the football equivalent of calling John Key the 1st female PM of NZ. Sometimes, you just have to tell the Emperor that the invisible cloth he is wearing is actually nothing at all.

Just watched Kiwi kids vs Croatia.  Ernie sign Tuiloma, please....he played an excellent game as a CB. At 18 he is a great prospect. Can play RB, LB  and CB.  Roux would be worth a further look as well.  These two could be the future wide defenders at the Nix. If anyone doubts this then who else should we sign instead?

I like Tuiloma too and he would be a nice back-up. He's not a starter at A League level IMO. The only ones I would consider would be Howieson or Payne on loan if say they were playing reserves or youth football still...but I'm sure there clubs would rather keep them close to home
Wildcard: Van Elia. Like the look of him.

If the ball is played to his feet I can definitely see this, hopefully the ball doesn't keep getting kicked to his head.

Stein finished clinically at the start of the season, but has yet to light the fire his reputation suggests he is capable of.  To say he scored 5 goals is to say he did as well in that stat as Dani Sanchez the season before, and slightly worse than Tim Brown.

Though that season was also more cohesive and we were a threat from all over the park.

Agree re: Van Elia. But wasn't the the only one in the squad playing ASB Yoof league?

I suspect with the current coach there will be more ball to feet attacks than the aimless crosses we've had for the last few seasons
