Ifill came here with that reputation too. The lesser workload here certainly helps
Just putting it out there. Dutch friend said he was an Irish Owen Hargreaves...

Already a member! Just joined this year.
Hey we won Division Two this year. Promoted to Div 1 next season. Then the Mainland Premier League!

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.
Did anyone else get the feeling from the Deaker interview (link in the Ernie Merrick thread) that we don't really plan on a using that import spot? He said he wanted 3-4 more players, spoke about adding more youth players to the roster, recruiting kiwis etc. Which is nice but kind of gives the vibe that we won't be signing an import DM any time soon.
How much cap space might we have left again? Do we really have room for several youth players and an import DM...?
Minimum wage is like 45k isn't it? Which would make a few more young players coming in at 90-140k. That seems like a fair chunk to take out while still trying to attract an import.
"Yellow Fever are fantastic – I have to say that"

Hamish Watson got another goal against Sydney... seems to be flourishing under Merrick.
Is Hamish Watson a youngin' or someone on trial? I seem to remember him being in the ASB Challenge last year...

Bertsch may take the import slot:
Bertsch, a German who has signed with Team Wellington, would take the Phoenix's final visa spot but Merrick said that didn't hurt his chances.
"It really comes down to whether I feel these players can do the job. If they can do the job, it wouldn't restrict me one bit, to take up the visa spot."

Has Hamish Watson lost any weight? I think he was carrying a little too much when playing for HBU and that impacted on his ability to get around the field and play a full 90. He certainly has a good goal scoring pedigree as a youngster and good to see him doing well.
It seems we have a few options with the remaining trialists being across a number of positions. Do we go with a striker, a CM or a wing back? Wouldn't be surprised if a few are signed tbh.

No more strikers. We have Hysugems, Cunningham, Ifill, Brokie, Bertos, Boyd and Rufer to fill 3 (or possibly less) spots. Plus Fenton was playing there last year. We need central midfielders and left and right backs where we are really short.
yeah we seem well covered in the striking department, hard to pick who the starting three will be; surely cunningham and Ifill would be there plus brokie or Stein....bertos is a bench option at best, along with Boyd and rufer - fenton is now an RB.
Queenslander 3x a year.

Rufer I think will play more centrally and if Hernandez gets injured expect him to step in.
Boyd and Bertos will battle it out for a place on the pine when one of the starting three gets suspended and the back up gts called up. e.g Brockie or Hysegems depending on who starts under Merrick.
Still light in the middle and full back positions. Would like to see Musa get a shot at LB.

Yep. Very nice lad. Might be past the "I'm so awesome" stage, and ready to do the hard work again.
Grumpy old bastard alert
Didn't he just sign for Team Welly? Probably best for him to get some gametime rather than warm the bench for us again.

Also with a younger squad there will be more subs so this will allow Ernie the luxury of more tactical options, including blooding younger players if the game is in a situation where this is possible.
Musa seemed not to bad last time and reports from England were promising. Any reason he hasn't picked up another club there or a pro club somewhere? Doesn't want to end up like Jack Pelter (IIRC) the guy who went to Roy Keane's Sunderland and then didn't kick on.

What does Jack Pelter do these days? Probably working at a Rebel Sport somewhere.

Does the five man bench rule change kick in this year?

Believe so.
Hyundai A-League coaches will have a greater number of substitutes at their disposal for the upcoming season, following the announcement by Football Federation Australia (FFA) that the number of players nominated for the bench on match-days will increase by one player.
This will see the number of players on the bench rise from four to five, in order to give coaches greater flexibility in deciding the composition of their reserves. The number of actual substitutions allowed will remain at the globally recognised three.
A-League coaches have campaigned for the rise in order to help bring the league into line with others around the world. It is anticipated the change will help allow coaches to play some of their younger squad members, who ordinarily might struggle to play the full 90 minutes of a match.
The FFA agreed to heed their calls following consultation with Club Owners as as part of the A-League review. “Having an additional substitute will give coaches greater tactical options on match days which should translate to an even more exciting and closely fought Hyundai A-league season for fans,” an FFA spokesperson said.

I wondered whether the FFA might have needed 12 months notice to purchase 20 additional white plastic chairs, but they've exceeded my expectations on this occasion.

when do we need the squad confirmed by?
So I'm guessing we've all given up on the foreign DM signing?
