Phoenix Transfer Speculation 2013/14

Any team would have limited attacking options with their 3 best attacking players out though. Pretty harsh to judge a whole season, with that in mind, on just one game. We put 3 past Sydney too remember.

It does make me nervous how little they played together (and even just how little they've played) during preseason.

I'm a bit surprised that we haven't heard more from the staff at the club about how good he's looked at training and he hasn't appeared much in pre-season.  That got me a bit nervous I suppose.  As we saw on the weekend behind our front line attacking options are pretty limited

I share those concerns but giving Ernie the benefit of the doubt atm. But Kenny has had almost no pre-season, so I expect him to be eased into things off the bench.

Excellent JD, thanks for the link. Looks like I can get it here in France too!

LOL their website says you can get a whole 12 months of A_league for 59.99 euros or monthly at 5.99. Considering that the A-League lasts for 4 months which one should I chose?? Hmmmmm

Getting back on topic. Really excited about the season. Kenny is the least of my worries. Seen him play for Costa rica. Get the right sort of balls to him and he will do OK. We have beaten Sydney and Jets and should have beaten WSW preseason so thats a good omen.

The only worry is if the defense can front up.....so we will probably win  all our games 4-3. But the bottom line is anything would have to be better than last year

Don't let El Grap see this....

Haha! I was going to ask. I believe El Grap drove up to the game. So what did you think of the ACFC "donkey"' El Grap? The Croatian "ex-pub-league player". I haven't heard. Do tell.

I'm also massively excited about seeing us play again.  But viewed dispassionately I'm not convinced by our squad at all, and apart from Cunningham's 10 international appearances I guess I'm a bit nervous about whether he'll improve us to the level we need to get to to make the top half.  The majority of his games are in Costa Rican football, I don't know a lot about the level but the team he played for was a lot smaller than the one Hernandez did before he came to Victory.

I wouldn't get too worried mate, atleast have comfort in the fact that Central coast are a completely new team (quite literally), Adelaide seem to think they can produce barcelona style tactics even though its now dying out, sydney have been pumped in every pre-season game and perf are relying on a hack and an apparent 'wonder kid' who has barely played.

Ernie on 2ZB 3.00pm to 4.00pm.

So much to like about Ernie: straight as a die, clarity of thought and some real passion and commitment.

Said he will be signing an experienced mid-fielder in the next couple of weeks - didn't say if import or not.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

No other clues / comments.

My pure speculation: It won't be the Spaniard - Ernie doesn't strike me as someone to make rash decisions and compromise on the type of player he's looking for - he hasn't had enough time to see if the Spaniard is any good to be predicating his signing.

I think he's working an a solid option/s and the recruitment process is reasonably well advanced.

I thought Riera was good at Hiroshima that time at CWC but not sure he is someone who deserves a foreign spot. No better than Sanchez really. I hope it's someone else.

Ernie's comment doesn't rule out James.

Though for all those hopeful of James as the saviour Mulligan was playing at a good level in England before he came back and had good form for the AWs (though he was playing right back not cm) and he was cack for us.

Any experienced Aussies in the midfield category like Paul Reid or better? Anyone coming back from overseas? Have to be better than Thompson I guess...

Mulli was played out of position so to say he was cack is a bit unfair.  One of Ricki's earlier experiences of playing players out of their natural/best position (Bertos, Durante and Killen also spring to mind).

Definitively deserves a foreign spot. Hard-working, technically very good, capable to play when needed, good vision and movement... Seems like a very nice and modest guy.

Well if he is nice and modest we have to have him.... *sheesh*

If he was that 'definitively deserves an import slot' why did the other 9 teams not have a sniff? He is an import for any team in this league... If he is that good, why is he an "amateur" in a tinpot league in a backwater football league? He'd be signed and playing overseas no issues at all if your ascertation was true.

I disagree with your opinion.

By that reasoning any player we sign is likely to be rubbish. You've gone too far the other way there and completely dismissed the possibility that he could be decent.

I get what you are saying. I was applying this solely to imports because imports for us are the same for every other team where as Kiwis for us, are not imports yet are for others.  I think we can apply that line of reasoning to imports because it's even across the board. Kiwis, not so much.

Well I'll add more to this. Two years ago, CCM played ACFC at the Croatian club. I think it's a fair statement to make without too much kerfuffle that Graham Arnold is a good coach with a good eye on talent. Why did he not sign him if he was so good (or others?) or deserving of an import slot?

I know there will always be players that prove my opinion wrong but he has been seen by CCM, Ricki would have more than likely been aware of him and now Ernie is trialling him and based on what's been printed on here, not much of a standout game when he played for ACFC against the Phoenix. It's the same with every that says Krishna deserves a shot - he has trialled everywhere and was found not to be good enough.

Well that's a coaching skill. Thinking that you may be able to get more out of a player or utilise talent. Arnold probably had options, more time and a core of a fairly settled champion squad.

Ernie may have fewer options and think that in this situation it may be better to give Reira a one year deal, than hope a great option materialises or rely on the kids (Is there a Busby Babe like moniker for this lot?). Let's be honest too, Sanchez didn't do too badly for us, though he wasn't seen too much last year. Sure we want to aim for better, just the other current and available options might be worse.

Yes, because that's SOOOOO critical in having a smart footballing opinion. Just look at all the rubbish ex-player pundits. You don't have to have been an All White or National League player to know the game and be able to evaluate talent.

Riera would be a good signing and different type of player to what we have - he can tackle AND pass - most of our squad can effectively only do one of those things with consistency

I dont think any player should be downtrodden in terms of quality based on Ricki not wanting them.

The man has no clue when it comes to talent... I honestly believe the only reason youngsters like Rojas / Barbs and co got a chance was because he was pushed into it through public opinion and a need to actually sign players.

I truely doubt he really ever saw either players real talent or potential.

Krishna, to be fair improves every year and has attracted interest outside of the A League.
