i still think we need 2 more defenders and a striker as well as leting go aloisi

true, the thing is with someone young like lia, he's already played at RB before, and could develop a lot more in that position, while offering a lot more than christie, that said christie is good in that he can be chucked on anywhere in midfield. but at the end of the day, signing a specialist right-back increases our depth a heck of a lot

vinnie looked to be operating at rightback in a seven aside training game today

Tony P made it clear that they were looking to buy a back, so I have no doubt that they will announce the purchase of one soon. I can't believe that they wouldn't be able to find one somewhere in the world.

The whole Nux' defence except for Karl Dodd were toilet last season. It's what held them back.

Tony P, Ricki and Seatts were all watching the Waitak v ACFC game last night - not sure if that's significant in terms of signings but Siggy looked good til he got himself sent off.

Just applying logic here. Every news piece i have read about McKain has went on about how much of a world class DEFENDER he is. He has played in the midfield but he is quoted as saying he prefers playing in the defence. Meaning we already have a great back 4, if we can shift Mckain to a right fullback role. I really dont see how people could say Karl Dodd could play on the right, he has no attacking attributes whatsoever and is a class CB. Him and Durante will be the best pairing in the A-League. Make no mistake already our team is going to be top 4 contenders as they are and new signings will just make us better

Babayaro would be nice but just no point to signing him. Left side we're totally covered.

I think we are 65% there with the squad we need to be real contenders.

We are still weak at right back - I don't want to see us play someone out of position to fill the gap - I would like to see a specialist right back signed.

I'm not convinced, with Ross's departure, we have a good enough defensive midfielder.

We don't have a 2nd striker in the same league as Smeltz.

Let's not kid ourselves - our squad is in very good shape but we are still short 2 and maybe 3 key signings; a bloody good striker, a hard arsed midfielder and a right footed version of Tony Lochhead.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Except that there is no logic there.

Karl Dodd has played RB in the past, McKain has not (instead having played CB and CDM). So where is your logic?

In short, you're an idiot.

No defensive midfielders?

Johnson, Brown, Mckain, Dodd, (Christie to a lesser extent).

How many do we want?

Christie a defensive mid? But i thought DM's had to actually work hard and get stuck in throughout a match?

Three for me, and two for them.

i agree with your points about a RB and a striker. But think we will be fine in the midfield, Brown and Johnson are defensive,  Ferrante and Lia are only going to get better, and now we have Bertos and Gao.

I think we almost need two quality strikers. we have lost(got rid of) George and Brownlie, and we havn't replaced them with a specalist striker yet. Or is this new kid Hearfield counted as a striker?

I read a report either on the Hartlepool United site or in their local paper that it was rumoured that there was a pre contract agreement.

IMO, as there was still a couple of months of the season left  at that time,  nothing had been announced because it may have jeopardised  Porter's chances of getting game time - more so because I read Porter and the manager aren't best mates!

With Hearfield signing on, what are everyones opinion on possibly him or Bertos supporting Smeltz up front? IF we don't get a striker of quality.

I wouldn't mind something like that. As long as Bertos doesn't shoot.

Have to be Hearfield - he's played that role before and Leo though a great crosser of the ball couldn't hit a fly on a cows arse with a banjo

Hearfield is even worse than Leo in that respect. At least Leo scored once..

does this mean that we have to wait for another two months on tender hooks to find out about Porter?...

Going on stats from the two seasons he's played in the A League - he's had 13 shots 9 have been on target - that has to be better than Leo's

I'm lazy...but I have memories of Smeltz number of shots on target being quite low...so ie his conversion rate was bludy good.

lots of shots is goood...but scoring a decent number of goals from opportunities...

could be nit picking....but...

Reminds me of a great scene from BASEketball:
Remer:    What's that?
Coop:    It's a commitment ring.
Remer:    What, for Jenna?
Coop:    Yeah. I'm letting her know that I'm ready to consider thinking about dating her exclusively.
Remer:    [reaches up into his clothing stall and pulls down his own little box] Well I'm giving Jenna a pre-commitment ring. It's a promise to pledge that we'll think about getting engaged just as soon as we're ready to make a commitment.
Coop:    You know what- what the hell are you talking about?? You don't care about Jenna! You were just in the hot tub naked with Victoria Silvstedt, Playmate of the Year!

Here's how we look as at now;

Wellington Phoenix

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON FOUR (08/09):
#1) Mark Paston
#2) Jeremy Christie
#3) Tony Lochhead
#5) Karl Dodd
#6) Tim Brown
#8) Vaughan Coveny
#9) Shane Smeltz
#10) Michael Ferrante
#11) Daniel
#12) Richard Johnson
#19) Greg Draper
#20) Glen Moss
#??) Gao Lei Lei

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON FIVE (09/10):
#17) Vince Lia
#23) Costa Barbarouses
#??) Leo Bertos
#??) Andrew Durante
#??) Jon McKain
#??) Troy Hearfield

That's 19 players - spots available for up to 4 more players.

Clearly a few more signings yet to come; hopefully Porter, a right back, a defensive midfielder and maybe 1 spare for a "spot" opportunity that might present itself.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)
