A comment in a 4-4-2 article posted today following an interview with Tony P;

"However, a trip to the icy north east of England could yet beckon with the club confirming it is anxious to seal a deal for striker Joel Porter, currently playing with English League One side Hartlepool United. "

The comment was not in quotation marks in the article so maybe nothing new and 4-4-2 could just be referring to previous interest expressed by the Nix in Porter. Who knows.

This waiting for news of the final 3 signings is torturous.

My guess is that as soon as Porter's season is over in England the signing will be announced. Any rumour that sticks around for this long, and most notably doesn't get denied by management has to be true. It seems to follow a very similar pattern to some of the other signings.

I think you're right - considering we still have 3 spots available it's all been too quiet for new signings not to have been lined up. I'm guessing Porter and one other will be announced when the English season is over, which is May 3 for both Porter and Mulligan (wishful thinking we get both).

if we get both I'll be pretty darn happy with the side we'll have - i reckon it'll be about 20-30% better than last year's

Phillips denies contract rumours
Phillips was recently named the Championship's best player

Striker Kevin Phillips says speculation he has turned down a new contract at West Bromwich Albion is nonsense.

Newspaper reports suggested Albion's 24-goal top scorer was ready to quit the club when his contract expires in the summer after rejecting a new deal.

But Phillips said: "I want to stress to the supporters that this is nonsense. I haven't rejected a new contract.

"We're all going to sit down after our season has finished and try to come to an agreement over the future."

Albion chairman Jeremy Peace has confirmed that talks with the 34-year-old are ongoing.

Transfers keep clubs busy

25 April 2008 | 10:18 - FFA

Whtile most A-League players have been on holidays during April, there has been plenty of movement amongst the eight clubs as they all look to revamp their squads for the 2008/09 A-league season.

Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory have had to delay their off-season break due to their participation in the AFC Champions League, but that has not stopped them adjusting their player rosters accordingly.

Adelaide United have re-signed Nathan Burns (2 years), Lucas Pantelis (2 years), Michael Valkanis (1 year), Angelo Costanzo (1 year) and Daniel Beltrame (1 year) as well as adding Sasa Ognenovski from Queensland Roar (2 years) and Daniel Mullen from the AIS (1 year), with Bobby Petta, Dez Giraldi, Shaun Ontong, Robert Bajic and Milan Susak released by the club.

Melbourne Victory bolstered their squad for the AFC Champions League with the resigning of Daniel Vasilevski (2 years), Steven Pace (2 years) and Nick Ward (1 year) as well as adding Billy Celeski (Perth Glory 1 year) and Tom Pondeljak (Central Coast Mariners 2 years), with youngster Nathan Elasi and goalkeeper Steve Mautone on board as a short-term signings to provide cover during Asias premier club competition. The Victory released Adrian Caceres and Ljubo Milicevic.

A-League 2008 Grand Finalists, Central Coast Mariners, have had to rebuild following the departure of John Aloisi (end of contract), Tom Pondeljak (Melbourne Victory), Alvin Ceccoli (released) and the retirement of Tony Vidmar. Coach Lawrie McKinna has rewarded loyalty and performance by offering revised contracts to Nigel Boogaard (2 years), John Hutchinson (2 years), Mile Jedinak (2 years), Brad Porter (2 years), Matt Simon (2 years) and has also added Adrian Caceres from Melbourne Victory (2 years), Ahmad El**ch (Wellington Phoenix 2 years) and former Australian Youth international Dylan Macallister from Norwegian club FC Lyn Norway (2 years).

A-League 2008 Champions, Newcastle Jets, will see a very different squad at pre-season training compared with the one that held the Championship trophy aloft at the Sydney Football Stadium in February. Gary Van Egmond has shown faith in his younger players and re-signed Tarek El**ch (2 years), Adam D'Apuzzo (2 years) and goalkeeper Ben Kennedy (2 years), whilst recently adding former Adelaide United Shaun Ontong (2 years) and young AIS striker Jason Naidovski (2 years). Leaving EnergyAustralia Stadium are Andrew Durante (Wellington Phoenix), Mark Bridge (Sydney FC), Denni (released), Jorge Drovandi (released), Steve Eagleton (retired), Troy Hearfield (Wellington Phoenix), Mario Jardel (released), Paul Kohler (released), Stuart Musialik (Sydney FC), Scott Tunbridge (released). With plenty of room left in the roster, Van Egmond is about to embark on a European scouting trip to eye potential signings. On his return to Australia, he will detour via Japan to assess the form of his star striker Joel Griffiths who is currently on loan at Avispa Fukuoka in the J-League Division 2.

David Mitchell begins his first full season as coach of Perth Glory and has the opportunity to construct a squad of his own. Jamie Harnwell (2 years), Jamie Coyne (2 years), James Robinson (1 year), David Tarka (1 year), Jimmy Downey (2 years)and Naum Sekulovski (1 year) have been re-signed and local Western Australian Josip Magdic and Ivorian Eugene Dadi have also been added to the club. The departure of Simon Colosimo (Sydney FC), Leo Bertos (Wellington Phoenix), Billy Celeski (Melbourne Victory) and Stan Lazaridis (released) will still leave Mitchell with a number of positions to full before the season starts.

Queensland Roar coach Frank Farina has travelled to Brazil during the off-season to visit Atletico Mineiro on a fact finding mission and will also be looking to add some new names to his team sheet after losing Sasa Ognenovski (Adelaide United), Reinaldo (Busan I'Park, Korea Republic), Simon Lynch (released) and Marcinho (released). Local favourites Josh McLoughan and Griffin McMaster have both been rewarded with 2 year contracts each. Young Queenslanders Tim Smits (Rochedale Rovers - QLD, 2 years) and David Dodd (Palm Beach - QLD, 2 years) along with AIS pair of Luke Devere and Isaka Cernak the have also recently joined the club for pre-season training. Adam theres also a young guy mentioned in todays GC Bulletin

Sydney FC has signed Qantas Socceroo John Aloisi (2 years) as the clubs new marquee player along with Simon Colosimo (Perth Glory 2 years), Stuart Musialik (Newcastle Jets 2 years) and Mark Bridge (Newcastle Jets 3 years). Leaving Sydney are former club captain Mark Rudan (Avispa Fukuoka, Japan), Ufuk Talay (Avispa Fukuoka, Japan), David Zdrilic (released), Ruben Zadkovich (Derby County, England), Patrick (released) and Ben Vidaic (released), whilst Adam Biddle (to Blacktown City, NSW), Ivan Necevski (to Blacktown City, NSW), Nick Tsattlios (to Penrith Nepean, NSW) are all keeping sharp with a stint in the NSW Premier League.

After their inaugural season in the A-League, Wellington Phoenix has resigned Vince Lia (2 years) and added New Zealand International and Wellington local Leo Bertos from Perth Glory (2 years) and fellow Kiwi Ben Sigmund (Auckland City, NZ - 1 year) . Australians Andrew Durante (2 years - Newcastle Jets), Troy Hearfield (2 years - Newcastle Jets) and Jon McKain (2 years - from Politechnica Timisoara, Romania*) as well as Chinese import Lei lei Gao (MyPa, Finland) have also taken up new contracts in the New Zealand capital. Leaving the Phoenix are the foundation captain Ross Aloisi (retired), Steven ODor (released), Cleberson (released), George Paladini (released), Ahmad El**ch (Central Coast Mariners), Felipe (released), Kristian Rees (short-term player, released), Jacob Spoonley (released) and Steven Old (Macarthur Rams, NSW Premier League).

With three and half months to the kick-off of the 2008-09 A-League season, there is sure to be more transfers making headlines.

Hartlepool aren't going to give Porter up without a fight. Have 0 idea how this one will play out. I'd say it's in Pool's favour though - they have more $. If we don't get him it's going to be interesting to see what happens - will Costa just get a bigger role?

Yep, if Hartlepool really want him I could see it being difficult for us to get him. Surely they've looked into other options for a striker in case this option fell through?? Haven't heard a whole lot though... hmm.

This is a hard one to call.....up until recently it looked likely that Porter would sign with the Phoenix. But now I am not to sure.

There are lots of unknown factors...like money.
Also from the FourFourtwo article it sounded like Porter was a bit disappointed with Hartepools performance this season. who knows, he may like the new challenge with the A-League and moving his family back down to this part of the world.

One thing normally sorts this out $$$$$$ if Hartepool want him and offer him significantly more loot then he will stay!!

I hope Terry P has a plan B.
Various reports have Coveny showing his age at preseason training. We are very light in the striking department.

If Smeltz gets injured its old men and boys!!!

I think we should try for Alan Marcina if the Porter deal falls through, we would be lethal with him and Smetz up front.

I guess we'll find out soon enough if Joel is Nix bound - it's Hartlepool's last game next weekend.

FYI, Porter injured his left knee in a tackle in last Saturday's game and went off in the 9th minute. Haven't read how serious the injury is.  Was given a standing "o" in Hartlepool's last home game of season.

On the strength of that report, Phoenix can be expecting to compete with West Ham for his signature, although I must say we have started to specialise in stomach muscle injuries of late.

Ahh but if you check the match report on the 'Pools page it says that he was keen to carry on but they pulled him off anyway, which sort of implies that taking him off was more of a cautionary measure than anything. Also if you check the fan message boards there are posts which basically state that his return to form and fitness have been one of the highlights of the season for them! All good news for us, lets hope the match report is correct and that it's just a minor niggle and that we do manage to pick him up!

A brief article on the Hartlepool fans website has Porter neither confirming nor denying a move to Australia / New Zealand - I think that's about as good an indication that he is coming down under we are going to get before Hartlepool's last game this weekend.

No news on his knee injury but, if we are lucky enough to get him, I'd imagine Ricki would give him 4 - 6 weeks off to get over the English season and the injuries, aches and pains. That would still give him 8 weeks to settle in to the team before our first league game.

According to an article on the Hartlepool website no decision has been made by the club chairman on Porter's future at the club. Article at;  https://www.hartlepool.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=107670

The article makes it sound like it's solely up to the club chairman whether or not he stays. I thought his contract was up so he could choose to move on if he wanted to - anyone know his contract status and obligations ?

Porter has had more than his share of injuries but has a solid scoring record and over a 100 league game starts at Hartlepool  - I guess you pay your money and take your chances (risk is injury, reward is goals).

El**ch never made the cut at Fulham - 6 appearances in 3 years before he was let go.

From what I've read about Porter and seen of El**ch their attitudes are like chalk and cheese. The Hartlepool fans love Porter's commitment and passion and Elrick is a lazy, useless ....

Actually, a couple of people who dealt with him when he was here suggested we may be a little harsh on him, and despite his on the pitch failings was quite a decent bloke.

LA Galaxy player Fred is in talks with the Wellington Phoenix and may even sign a deal as early as next week. The only factor holding up this deal is LA's reluctance to let him go without a fee. This will be a great signing for the Phoenix an arguably the biggest in the clubs short history.

Just checked out that Porter profile. Porter is only a little bloke...175cm, which is about as tall as my granny( mind you she is shiite in front of goal...but she dribbles real good!!!!)

Hope he doesn't get monstered by all those thugs disguised as defenders in the A-League. Especially if he has dodgy knees. Funny how we have gone for lots of good wingers like Gao, Hearfield, Daniel and Berthos who are good at crosses and then are (potentially) recruiting a short striker??????

The crosses go to Smeltz and Covs (and Draper)  and then Porter (and Costa) pick up the shorter crosses, run at the man or latch on to the knock-downs.
