dude tbh i think we r dreaming slightly if we think we r going to ign him under the cap, i expect marquee status for him, and why not? the chances of getting a big name who's actually worth it are so slim, i'd rather have someon elike porter, who's still got a heck of a lot of game in him.and also, i wouldn't worry, would they separate the diff between aus and nz on that forum? they are probably going on that he's going to an 'aus' league club

...and they'd be right wouldn't they?

Well they were quoting him - so I dunno.

And he might not have that many games in him with his knee ;)

Look, if it's a matter of having him as a Marquee or not having him at all (due to the salary cap) which would you go for? Look at this video:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=PnALQvm_25g

If this guy gets anywhere near the form he shows in some of those goals he will tear the A-League apart. This guy is class... He's quick, left footed and looks to be more skillful with the ball at his feet than Smeltzy. There's a goal in that video at about 1:35 where the ball comes to him laterally at high speed and he flicks it up with the inside of his right and then somehow does this amazingly acrobatic flick with his left to chip the ball over the unsuspecting CB and Keeper. How can the prospect of this guy coming not get you excited?!

Wouldn't be surprised if he's marquee Durante, McKain and Bertos would not have come cheap.
And as far for the "home" thing, you will be suprised how many people overseas think NZ is another state of Australia.

May be another reason why he wants to come "home".

The play a lot more games in an English season so he may view a move to the A League as a way to extend his career by 2 or 3 seasons

i was thinking the same thing. are A-league players overpaid for how many games they actually play?

The sort of difference I think Joel Porter could make is;

1st or 2nd instead of 5th or 6th

An average crowd of 17k instead of 14k - everyone loves winners - do the maths on the extra gate takings

A spot in the playoffs - do the maths on the gate takings from 2 or 3 home games with a crowd of 20k

Maybe a spot in the regional club championship.

I don't know if that qualifies Joel as a "marquee" - frankly I don't care - I just hope and pray we sign him.

do you anticipate that he'll be running "walking on water" lessons for the rest of the squad in his spare time?

Yes I do think a player who has scored almost half of an English League One team's league goals this season can make that much difference in the A-League.

Have to take in account his obvious injury proneness though. I wouldn't just go off a bunch of highlights either - you could make even El**ch look good doing that.

Same. El**ch's highlights 'package' would last for just the length of time it took to smack in that one goal.

I gather the exact amount we'd have to shell out for Porter isn't known but, it would have to be a fair old chunk to blow on someone with a potential glass knee. There's a whiff of fish about the guy, I reckon.

You are a cynic Valeo.
The only things we can judge Porter on are the youtube vid and the constant ravings about him from the Hartepool fans on their website. They have watched him for a few seasons and rate him strongly.
Many of those goals from the Youtube vid are pure class. The second goal where he shows blistering pace to sprint between two defenders, when they seem to have the ball covered and then shoots pass the keeper is a gem. The rest of the clip shows someone with a high degree of skill and a great instinct for goal scoring. There would not be many A-League strikers who could put a goal scoring CV like that together.

Remember he is coming from League 1. Smeltz came from conference League....several levels lower and he finished up one of the A-Leagues top strikers last season. This guy will carve up the A-League. Him and Smeltz in tandem will be dynamite!!!!

SIGN HIM NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny, aussies (West Islanders) are getting more american by the day. Yep they (in general) do rate themselves highly, . Allways good for a laugh. Australia is far more a state of the u.s.a. than NZ is of Aussie (or will ever be)

Reckon the Aussies would give us Tasmania if we asked nicely? They don't exactly do much with it currently and it just sits there on the map like a pimple on a saggy bum!

It would make a great base for the second NZ A-League franchise!

It would be but I'm sure theyve got something in the rules that would stop a Tassie side entering the comp.
Rule 2652a.7 : At all times there will be only 11 heads per team on the field at any one time one time.
This would only allow a team from Tassie to field 5 locals and 1 single headed import.

Yes, even though there is always strong mainland competition in the West Island for inbred capital, Tassie is known for its 'family affairs'.

I didn't say he wouldn't be a good signing. I'm just not blowing my load over a player I have never even see play yet - that's just silly imo.

Mmmmmm... so IS there a football player you would "blow your load over"???? Funny as.

I'm pretty Porter is happy your saving "your load" for someone else,.

Didn't El**ch come from the premiership?

Not a fair comparison since he wasn't playing but I think your expectations might be a touch high. Still nothing wrong with optimism.

Hartlepool's last game is Sat May 3 - hopefully Porter's signing will be announced by the end of April.  I really hope we get him. Daniel, Gao and Bertos creating and Porter and Smeltz finishing up front - what an awesome prospect.

Including Porter there are still 3 spots available - it's all gone quiet on the speculation front which I guess means Mulligan is looking less likely. It also looks like the Nix have plugged the "Sunday News" leak - a good thing of course - bugger it.

Don't much like the sound of;

"The Phoenix chief rejected any suggestion though that a deal was done and dusted. Exploratory talks with agents is as far matters have progressed with the player not having had discussions with either Pignata or coach Ricki Herbert."

Hopefully a smoke screen.

Yeah, I don't think Tony would say anything unless there were promising signs from the Porter end.

I'm pretty sure there was a news article posted at some point where Tony P said that Porter was about 50/50 to sign?

we will be in trouble if we don't sign another striker. Porter sounds good.

But without him we only have Smeltz, Costa and Coveny - Costa isn't ready to be one of our main strikers ( will be a good sub this year ) same with Coveny.

I think that everything points to porter signing.

This is like all the other transfer deals, no one confirms or deny's. Remember Durante...right up til the end he was none commital and then once their obligations to their previous club are forfilled they come over.

We know the Phoenix want Porter, from the Hartepool fans website we know they are resigned to losing him. Everything points to a transfer. THe Phoenix are just respecting Porters obvious request to keep it quiet until the end of the UK season. Any player knows that to tell your club you are off will mean you pretty much spend the rest of the season warming the bench.

I guess the only spanner in the works would be a late counter offer from Hartepool but that seems unlikely from reading the fans website.

Anyway if Porter was not coming, the Phoenix would be making more noise about signing another striker. There is no way they would go into next season with the current strike force.

At the end of last season, one would've said we wouldn't come into this season without a specialised Right Back...

I do agree with you though.
