Adelaide have said they wont be re-signing  Costanzo, Salley, and Diego.

People still wanting Salley?

Nah not now that McKain is firing however Diego would be good but I hear he is going to Asia.

Costanzo is too old now, would be a waste of money. Don't think that Salley would be a good investment conidering that we need to sign attacking players to improve. But wouldn't be a bad squad player if we could get him on the cheap.

Apparently Salley is going to China, Costanzo to Newcastle and Diego to Sydney.

Is this our new attacking midfielder?? One of the import slots??

Quote from the SMH

"""Meanwhile Sydney's interest in Brazilian midfielder Diego - one four players officially released by Adelaide United yesterday - is believed to have cooled. Wellington Phoenix are now expected to lead the race for his signature."""

We need to be careful we're not just picking up the crumbs.  Adelaide doesn't want him and Sydney also appears not to be interested.  There should be at least some warning bells sounding there.

Next season has to be a big one for Phoenix if we are going to attract anywhere near the break-even home attendance of 10,000, which means carefully recruiting the right personnel.  There are only 4 import positions available, so filling them needs to be properly researched rather than just making the easy pickings that require little effort but that may not produce the winning, enteraining brand we need.

Tony said in the RS interview that they are looking overseas and that there is no one in the A-league they would target.

SMH picked Kwasnik coming here, but the got it wrong with that SFC youngster, so who knows if this Diego call is right or not??

Looking back at the match programmes I have, Diego seems to have been a bit player in Adelaide's campaign this season.  The import signings we make for next season will need to be of the quality able to command starting positions week in and week out.  In other words, they will need to be the nucleus of the starting XI around which we fit the remainder of the squad.

You unbeliever you, here it is, about halfway down

And there are a few other tidbits in there that might interest you, don't you like Alameo and Fowler??

Cheers

Thanks, your right about me liking Alemao and I would love to have him here although they also said Cristiano could leave (surpirse, surprise) and it would be great if we could get him aswell.

I rate Alemao. I reckon he could be a gun if he is given more game time. Don't really like Diego, though. Never really set the league alight and has been here for quite a while now.

Peanuts as far as professional players go.

Yeah, relative to the great world of football, you're right el grapadura.  Do you think the salary cap for the A-League is too low?  I guess it's a double-edged sword.  On the one hand, it gives clubs some protection from getting into financial difficulties, and enables more of a level playing field between clubs.  On the other hand, it means the A-League is not going to attract better quality players, a consequence of which is that the standard of football will be inferior and crowd support lower.

In addition to protecting clubs from financial difficulties, increase in the salary cap would immediately widen the gap between the haves and have-nots in the league - Sydney, Gold Coast, and probably Melbourne would greatly benefit from the increase, while the likes of Perth and Newcastle would really struggle. Then you would end up with a very uneven competition as well, one thing that FFA has tried desperately to avoid.

I guess the plan is to gradually increase the financial viability of the clubs and the profile of the league, and keep increases of the salary cap in line with such growth, to both keep clubs away from financial trouble and the competition relatively even. It's a long term project though, I would think.el grapadura2009-01-21 20:50:55

Yep - if the salary cap was taken off clubs like us, Perth and Newcastle would most likely go under/be in financial turmoil which would slow down the league more than what the salary cap currently does.

Is the salary cap likely to be raised slighty?- like last season it was.
Arent you allowed to have five imports this season (cant remember where I heard that) or is it still Four?
Permalink Permalink

Yep - 5 imports. And it should be raised slightly - though they might not do it this time because of the 2 new clubs coming in. valeo2009-01-21 16:44:20

They should make it so their are more substitutes on the bench tio give the coach a better selection.
When Durante got injured against Sydney we had to be very carefull when we subbed.
