Can we stop talking about GCU players now please? GCU are playing next season, get used to it.

Even if they do play next season will the players not be feeling nervous about a similar situation happening again? especially if the fan doesn't turn up. If players want more security they could look elsewhere.

Has anyone heard if Herbert and Tony P will be repeating last years off season recruitment trip to the UK (or anywhere else) ?

I think we'll sign Miller on a 1 year deal - he seems to be struggling to find a club

That was because McGlinchey was injured for most of the season.

I guess Ricki will have a good look in SA when he is there for the World Cup.

No he wasn't. Nicky Travis played 20 games, McGlinchey played 21.

So why haven't we started signing yet? Melb Heart looks like hey will have a great squad.
Permalink Permalink

Heart are like Gold Coast and had to build from scratch and don't have a lot of depth.

Local players will come in for pre-season to see if they make the grade, decent free-agents in Aus are rare and youngsters are making a name in state leagues so need to be watched and then trialled.

Our most likely signings are overseas and they are still all playing.

We could also pick up someone from Fury - Roar just grabbed Stefanutto.

That said, I can't think of anyone from Fury I would particularly want ... Ufuk Talay maybe?
Permalink Permalink
almost 16 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

Talay just for his name. But you are right, he's not too bad of a player. Except for his cheaty through-ball vs us last year...

Williams has reasonable pace, and isn't entirely rubbish.

Ferguson was quoted last year as saying there is no way he'd let Daal go, which is a shame, because the Dutch international is just such a talented footballer. Hmmmm.

Gotta keep in mind though, NQF are in it to win it, so are not in a situation where they will be looking to get rid of any of their decent players, so will be holding on to anyone decent to build on fo next season.

I'm not surprised that Stefanutto has gone- he would have been on a decent salary, and the Fury may think they can invest his share of the cap more appropriately.

Dutch international

Netherland Antilles that is. If I was born there, I'd probably make the grade too!! :)
not a big fan of Daal, but yeah, given the other clubs' situations we should try and snatch a couple of deals.

Yeah, take any positive Dyron Daal comment flippantly  Although I'll give it to him, he was getting better throughout the season- ie figured out the ball was for kicking and not catching, and managed a couple of decent goals.

Williams is the only player to have re-signed with the club so far, he's not going anywhere. The reason guys like Stefanutto, Sagnuolo and Fowler are being signed or linked elsewhere is that the FFA controllers havn't agreed to sign them to new deals yet. They are probably offering less money as they look to cut costs.

Hopefully Paul Ifill and Chris Greenacre are referring friends so that if ricki and Tony do go to the UK again it will be the relatively straight forward matter of checking out the leads (no I said leads not Leeds) from these two.

Kanu can barely run - he would be a replacement for Dadi in all the wrong ways

maybe we might be in for coventry's Clinton Morrison. He's a striker that used to play for Ifill's old club. He also has Carribean heritage. He's 30 and i think his contract runs out in the UK summer?

According to the Wiki article, one of his grandmothers is Irish.

I think it's great we have the majority of our squad already signed for next season but two of the positions to be filled during the off season (i.e. 2nd striker and creative play maker) will be critical to our success, and our ability to foot it with the big boys (i.e. Sydney and Melbourne), next season.

I know it's Tony's intention to take his time with recruitment, and who can argue with that, but we got Ifill by the skin of our teeth last year and ended up with Chen because we left finishing our recruitment too late.

Last year there was a clear plan to recruit from the UK (and Brazil at one time) with a scouting trip organised. I'm getting a little uncomfortable we haven't heard boo about recruitment this off season.

Wouldn't mind the odd release from the club reassuring supporters that they are on to it (i.e. World Cup commitments and $ issues will  not unduly impact recruitment).

P.S. Had the same concerns last year and it turned out alright - just a worrier

Would be good if we picked up a couple players from the World Cup seeing as they're on display whilst Ricki is there.

Exactly, I wasn't suggesting we pick up Rooney or Henry. We aren't the only minnows at the Cup.

For the "make a difference" players I think we have found the winning recruitment formula (e.g. McKain, Ifill and Greeny) - Aussies or Kiwis ready to return "home" or UK based players (from at least near top of League 1 and preferably Championship / some Premiership) who want to extend their career in a place that offers their family a good lifestyle.

Last year we were systematic in identifying, chasing and securing potential targets.

We need to make sure we have just as clear and focused a game plan this year as we did last year.

How much money would we have in the salary cap?

No idea but Mulligan, Ferrante, Reddy and Dadi (?) going should free up some $s.

Marque status can also be assigned to the highest paid player (and U23 ?) to keep his / their salary outside cap.

I suspect it will be the budget not cap that is the limiting factor.
