that would be a bad move for him. He just stepped up to his first prem game, and is getting regular game time in the reserves.

I'd go and watch him.  Chance for Ricki to work with him prior to Confeds Cup.  Could score some goals.  We could afford him.

Isn't the Confed Cup over before our season starts?

just saw on the phoenix website (in the article about the new assistant coach) that Dodds contract hasn't been re-newed...

Yeah well that sorta closes the Dodd chapter. A bit weird that he wasn't released with the rest of them, maybe something going on behind the scenes?
I always thought the inclusion of that centre back Scott from Waitakere United in the All White squad for Thailand was a chance for Ricki to size him up for the nix..

In all honesty, my back four wouldn't have included Dodd (would go with Muscat, Sigmund, Durante, Lochhead), however, he was a more than capable deputy if any of the centre two were suspended/injured which is bound to happen over the course of a season.

Spot on.

I suspect (based on absolutely no evidence other than an "impression") that Dodd's salary expectations and how much the Nix could / would pay were not aligned.

I would personally prefer that we recruited a 3rd centre back, good enough to start if required, for a reasonable salary and put the "savings" in to the pot available for the 2 much needed strikers.

So we'll never know just who let the Dodd out?

But on the official homepage there is still Dodd and Christie in the current roster.

Edit: I see the information on the official homepage about Dodd.

The evidence would suggest TP/RH did

In terms of footballing quality, I actually think Dodd was our best central defender - I rate him ahead of Durante, and, in terms of footballing ability, definitely ahead of Sigmund.  Certainly his pedigree is much better, having played in Romania and the Scottish Premier League.  In my view, it has to be an imperative that we recruit another established central defender from the A-League or better - someone who can command the position and confidently build up play from the back.

More concerning generally is that we have only 16 players at the moment (15 if it is assumed that Christie will not be re-signed).  That's a big number of new players to find in arelatively short period of time, and in very crucial positions.  If we're simply not to sign players to make up the numbers, I would have expected more urgency in the recruitment drive up to now, than what appears to be the case.  Based on Ricki's interview with The Press, it seems that our best hope at the moment is to sign a striker from the English League One.  I can't understand why Ricki and Tony P aren't overseas now looking for more players.

On Radio sport news just now, announcing Dodd being released but TP being quoted as saying the English striker has signed and they are just awaiting confirmation of the signature by fax. Watch this space (well not this actual space but one near-by)......

Pignata and Phoenix head coach Ricki Herbert are close to securing two top strikers following a trip to the United Kingdom.

We very, very close with one and were having good discussions with another, Pignata said. We plan to make announcements regarding that once the season over there has finished because we dont want these two players to lose focus given that the clubs they play for are both pushing for promotion to the Championship.

In the meantime, rising stars Roy Krishna and Luis Corrales will get their chance to push for fulltime Phoenix contracts during trials with the club, Pignata said

Just got that from the club email

Well, I guess we pull all the strikers out of the top 2-3 sides in the league and then dissect away...
