Adriano about to be released by Inter, at least worth giving his agent a ring
You know we belong together...

This reinforces the difficulty that Tony and Ricki face:

In terms of salary we are talking league two - a level below what they have just managed to recruit at.

Lifestyle is of course a benefit that some of the Australian clubs have. Who would want to live in Wellington however?

Eaten any dog today?
Q: "Who would want to live in Wellington?"
Anyone from the UK that has more than half a brain

I'm sure some of the league two boys could more than cut it in the A league

Its interesting reading the articles by the liverpool daily post and the article by fox.
Fox says that salaries are too high overseas for the A league to compete but then the liverpool daily post says that Greenacre might have made a good choice by leaving because atleast hes gotta job for the next two years.

Maybe a league one striker ain't such a big ask

He did however also say in the Liverpool Post article that he is not here to make a lot of money, and the lifestyle change appeals.

P.S. I would actually rather live in Wellington than Beijing.

I'm presuming we have the same marquee has last year

Why would we?
Now we should be able to easily fit McKain into the cap. He shouldn't be giiven the marquee status. He's not getting paid anything more than anyone else in the cap i presume so I'm thinking we shouldn't use this strategy again if we can help it.  Maybe use it on a Youth marquee but I'd prefer to have the marquee spot open.

Both those articles are quite interesting.....obviously the A-League cannot match the big European pay cheques. But the LP article did point out that the financiaL crisis has hit smaller lower league clubs very hard and that many will be shedding players.

That makes the phoenix's recruiting job a whole lot easier. We might not be able to match the pay but we do offer job security. As Greenie mentioned, having a secure two year contract was a big factor in his decision to sign with us. There almost certainly will be other players in the UK finishing the season and wondering what their future will be. Suddenly a secure contract playing 27 games a season over summer in the a-League is now not such a bad idea.

marquee spots have a set criteria, what McKain meets, this means his salary can be outside the cap, so we can use that space in the cap to pay more for someone who doesnt meet them.

It's not a question of is he good enough, it's that he meets the criteria so we are exploiting that to make extra space under the cap..seems logical to me if we are not going to sign a specific marquee

Yeah it is. But it does look like we won't be signing a marquee so McKain the  marquee it is. Though maybe Greenies got a mate who plays abit?
All I was saying is that a Marquee spot should be for a marquee player, seems a waste on Mckain.

I thought McKain was solid in the Midfield. When he moved into the centre and Brown got fit suddenly we started competing and getting a bit more possession. Op to that point we were sh*te in the middle.

Behind Smeltz arguebly our most influential and important player.

most people probably disagree with me but does anybody else think smeltz was arguably one of the most overrated players in the team?

I think the whole golden boot thing about him was overrated, as he took penalties.

I said this last year, he was and is over-rated. BUT i still loved him as he did what he should, scored goals.

I don't think he will be near the goldern boot this year.

I don't think he was overrated, but in terms of what he could do, I think there are plenty of players who could replace him.  I.e. his skills aren't particularly unique

yup i also felt he was over rated why people will say well im pretty sure just under half of his goals were from the penalty spot plus he was offside a lot in saying that he was still good but not as good as a lot of people say imo

3 of his 13 goals were pens from my records. We were not a team that set up loads of scoring chances, so I think Smeltz deserves lots of credit for managing as many as he got. Just cos he's left doesn't mean his was any less a player.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

smeltz was a class act, don't bag him now cause he left. he was top goal scorer in the whole league! that speaks for its self.

he was a good player but i feel not as good as people say, in saying that i hope he still plays as good as he did or better for GCU because he is one of the main components of us getting into the world cup in 2010

Just for the record, he had 5 penalties in his 12 goals last season, and 1 penalty in his 9 goals in the first season.

Smeltz is a fookin legend.....we wouldn't be half the club we are without his contribution.....

No-one else was knocking in the chances provided by the team, or creating and finishing their own chances....

He gave us a great two seasons and won the Johnny Warren Medal and Goal of the Season while with us...

I told him at the Phoenix Awards that he would be greatly missed, and I would only forgive him for leaving if he scored the goals that lead the All Whites to the World Cup in 2010.

Step up Chris Greenacre, but by the sounds of things we've recruited and bought well.  Be interested to see how Vinnie Lia goes this season.

News, I like your theory regarding Tommy Smith...have a word to Ricki and tell him to talk to Roy.

I'm looking forward to seeing who steps up and takes their chance over the month of trialling out of Corrales and Krishna.....

Smeltzy was great for us but his skills were not uniquely special. This guy Greenacre looks to be a more than adequate replacement. He comes in with over 100 goals scored in a higher division than Smeltz played(mainly)
If he stays fit and in form then we can realistically expect him to nail as many goals as Smeltz in a season.

I you consider Greenie a straight swap for Smeltz then apart from Diego we have not as yet considerably strengthened our squad from last year. I would like to see a targetman striker with at least as good a pedigree as Greenie plus another good quality experianced midfielder capable of scoring goals. Plus a replacement for Dodd and another goalie.

On the subject of Vinnie Lia....where is he going to slot in this season?. Will him and Ferrante be fighting for the same spot? Ferrante will need to lift his game . He was very poor at the end of last season.

I think we've discussed about Smeltzy enough. Point is, he's not going to be bought by the Nix, is he?

So let's concentrate on who is gonna be on board. I'm curious to know if Tony P and Ricky are still pursuing another striker from the lower English tiers or if the deal has already fallen through.

It seems very likely that we're going to buy either Krishna or Corrales, plus Greenacre and Costa. That makes 3. So at least one more, and I'm dying to know how that strikers is going to be.

Do we really need another goalkeeper who doesn't qualify as a youth under the A-league's policy (of which we need three youths) ?
Happy?
